Hey everyone, I'd appreciate a few opinions here.

I've been looking into changing my car for something a bit more exciting. I've been looking at a few options in a price range of about 3-5 grand. The plan is to get a nice big fast japanese car. Good acceleration is more important to me than top speed. I've been looking at Skylines but I might opt for something a bit lower powered because of fuel/insurance/tax costs.

So let me know what you think please...

A big car is going to have a big engine.

Do you mean medium sized? Basically if you want fast in that class you're looking at a turbo. Celica, MR2, Evo II.

Only "big" fast car with a not so big engine in that price bracket I can think of is a 2.5 twin turbo Soarer.

I would go for a toyota levin, subaru impreza or Mitsubish Evo.

If you increase your budget to 5 or 6k you could get a nice clean one of the above with low milage... maybe a 96/97

GTO is 3 Liter afaik so would be expensive to run, especially in a city. FTO is nice but its hard to get a manual.

They seem to be having trouble spelling "cylinder" too!

This is a new one now for me, but have any of you ever heard of 2o valves? This must be some type of new valve format invented recently.

And now there's a warrenty as opposed to warranty and straight 6 is now 6 striaght clyender, and I know that what they really meant was 20 valves as opposed to 2o valves, but it's impossible for a straight 6 to have 20 valves(only 4, 5 or 10 cylinder engines can have 20 valves, it can only be in multiples of 6, with a minimum of 12 valves, so it's either 18, or as it's a Japanese car 24 or 30 valves).

Of course I know I'm being super nerdy going on about spelling, but when you're preparing ads or anything like this, you must do everything right. It just looks so bad and it would put me off doing business with a crowd that can't even go to the trouble of getting a spell checker to make sure things are spelled correctly. It wouldn't take 2 minutes to do it.

I'd be all for a Legacy B4 Twin, but I doubt you'll find one for the money.

    Here's a 2L GL for 6k..

Good point. 2.2 Prelude is big and relatively quick.

The OP said he wanted something lower powered to keep running costs down..
Also size and speed are relative. In terms of your standard 1.3L hatchback that most young people drive a levin is bigger and faster..

I think a levin provides a nice mix between looks size and economy..

Does anyone actually think Levins look good. I think they're so boring to look at! not even in a handsome way, just lazily styled, no detail.

All Levins are is a dressed up Corolla. Not exactly the kind of thing that excites me(but maybe they are a nice car to drive, I don't know).

Yah, but not as low powered and as small as a levin. It's a weed compared to and Evo or an Impreza turbo.

€4.5K, not bad. That is what they pay you per month to take it away and hide it, isn't it?

Thanks for all the replies lads!

Just to clarify a few things... I'm don't live in a city so how the car is suited to city driving etc is not very important to me. I like to feel safe in my car, so the less modifications it has when I buy it the happier I'll be. Also, my current car is a 1.4 Megane so something like a Levin might be big and fast enough to impress me.

Does anyone know what the 0-60 of a 199x 1.6 Levin might be?

The 200sx looks like it might be a nice compromise between power and running costs. Thanks for all the replies so far anyway, lots for me to consider and research...

they are too slow, you want the tubo GT-R ones.
but they are also cop magnets.

    have you looked at Hondas??
I know of a extremly clean 60k SIR civic going for 7k it has a spoon ecu too, put out around 180-190 bhp.

also late integras, and if your looking acceleration, some jap import toyota yaris had turbos on them:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,863 ✭✭✭RobAMerc

I would have to say 200sx or a nice rwd Corolla twin cam.

I would not be keen on any of the other Jap stuff.

You should also consider a Pug 205, 106, 306 gti or maybe even a Clio 16v - none big, none Jap but all better to drive.

I have a car that falls in your budget.
I will have it up on carzone later on today.

Levins are very over rated, and crap looking. Not exceptional handling either. Better off with a Celica really.
You could get a Galant VR4.

The OP asked people to suggest some. Despite that people are suggesting Peugeots, Renaults, Volvos, and before long, BMWs.

Many of the cars thus mentioned would blow a T5 into the weeds.

Considering the the nature of the forum and the context of the thread, Its doubtful that I'd be referring to a fictional space station for puppets.

What I was referring to was the Volvo T5, 850, S70, S60, etc etc.

Ok well the usefulness of the replies is starting to drop but thanks all the same!

There seems to be plenty of models out there that might suit me so I'm going to have to see which ones are best and then try to find a good example in my budget.

So far I'm thinking maybe one of:

    Skyline
    Levin
    Prelude
    Trueno
    200sx

    Big. Fast.

    another :

I drive these; nothing goes wrong except the steering pump gasket; once it's fixed it's fixed; easy to spot - if fluid leaking from under steering pump it needs a new gasket which is easy to do. There's a reason they're high mileage ... they're great cars and that engine will outlast almost all others.

Re the LS400, that's a very-expensive-to-tax 4.0L. Ultra reliable, but the suspension is woefully soft. Makes it comfy, but forget sporty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,036 ✭✭✭trellheim

he wanted Big and Fast as I recall, anything over 3.5L is the same price.

It's not fast. It clocks in at 8.4 on the 0-60 last time I measured.

I'd drop the Levin from that list, it's fairly average at best. Also the Skyline won't fit your budget, unless you go for the 2 litre, and that's fairly crappy.
Prelude Type S would fit the bill nicely, or an S14 200SX.
