Hi, Last night I tore the ligaments in my foot was in A&E all night. I am so p'd off :mad: just wondering how long am I realistically going to be out of action.. I am on crutches , difene and nurefen ! Doc in A&E said that by tomorrow I have to start putting some weight on it which I cant really do at the moment. Just wondering has anyone had this and how long it took them to start squating etc and also doing cardio ! Obvioulsy I can still do my upper body. Il crack up otherwise.

    Thanks

    Sorry to hear that.
Believe it or not, putting weight on it early will help it heal quicker. You will also need to do some physio on it. I did the same thing a year ago - Realistically you can probably start to exercise on it in 4/5 weeks and another month before it's perfect.

make sure that you are washing the difene down with a yogurt drink or have something substantial to eat - they can be very hard on your stomach - ulcer hard for some people within a week or so!

Listen to your physio - they have seen it all before, don't forget that ligaments have very little blood supply so healing is slow.

Think about getting your shoulders and neck massaged if you are on crutches for any length of time it is amazing how quickly they can knot up.

Based on 12 weeks I spent on crutches before (nine of them in a cast) move around as much as you can. The movement on the crutches will build you arms, shoulders and lower your body fat if you use them a lot - I had a noticable four pack and hint of bottom two when I came off them.

The basic rule is to walk as much as pain will allow. As someone said above the blood supply is minimal and if you fail to use the ankle at all, that will only decrease the blood flow even more.

I find the Da's old hot cold thing still works although I haven't gone over on mine in years now. Fill 2 tubs, one with hot water, one with ice, ice cold. The hot shouldn't scald you so be careful. Put the bad foot in the cold bucket and hold it there until the cold is bearable, probably about 45 seconds. Then take it out and immediately put it in the hot one. Again, leave it until it's bearable. The repeat the process but finish on a cold one.

I find this increases my recovery time from soft tissue injuries. I've been back on the mat training when I'd no right to be after nasty pulls and strains. Give it a shot and see.

Thanks guys for all the infor. I decided yesterday that it would be best if i went to physio. So off I went and boy am I glad I did. My foot felt immediatley bit better. I am now hobbling on it which is a great improvement. She said that I should try walk on it as much as possible and keep trying to move the ankle . She said that I can do the bike an cross trainer but to lay of the treadmill, squats and lunges for the time being. I went to the gym last night yep 2 days later and just done my upper body, its better than nothing I suppose. I am hoping by sunday to be able to walk as normal as possible and maybe a bit or bike and cross trainer !!
