i'd imagine the amount of views is because its a porsche, some people like to window shop

It's a fairly specialised market for Porsche, as woodseb says; window shoppers dream.

Probably have to drop the price slightly to spark interest. tight car though.

Without wanting to be too blunt, your car is about 4-5k overpriced, hence your lack of calls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,597 ✭✭✭tossy

    Ok some general points.

Your car looks well and the photos show its good points,i dont know where the were taken but it appears to be a show room or some car related business in the background, that to me screams trade add even though its marked as a private sale, now im not saying anythinng dodgey is going on here, but to me a normal joe soap looking o carzone for any car that would set of alarm bells - its the little things.

The NCT Thing would also set of alarm bells

I recently sold my car it was up on carzone for 5 days with over 500 views and i didnt get one call,it was on CBG for 1 day and got 1 call, got no calls from autotrader and buyandsell after 1 day-in the end the car sold to a guy who seen it on the road and not in an add.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭tvr

Yeah I agree the photos aren't helping you people will thing you are in the trade and are trying to pull a fast one by selling privately to avoid the hassle of a warranty which might imply there is something wrong with the car.

Therefore take some pics of it in the drive away.

I would guess those pictures are taken in the UK ? as I see the symbol for the MOT in 1 or 2 photos. Take some proper pics !

Also why it referred to as having £££ of extras instead of €€€ of extras?

(A small point but since everyones playing detective today I thought I'd join in)

Not trying to offend the OP and I'm not too clued up on Porsche prices but a neighbour of mine bought a 01 Boxter 2.7 with 70k miles on the clock just before Christmas for €28k from a dealer. Granted it is Canary yellow in colour  but I think you might want to take another look at your asking price all the same if your getting no interest.

They start at just under 73k new.

That 27 year old Porsche isn't a Boxter.

The car is only worth what someone will pay, therefore it's not worth 27k (so far). I think you'll drop your price.

Yes i did spot that,he might have bought it new in the uk-who knows.im not implying anything im just pointing out some reason as to why he's getting no calls.

Another thing why obscure the car reg? first thing i do if im looking for a car is get the reg and run a check on it!!!

I know you wil lsay its security related and you dont want anyone finding out where you live, but if someone is hell bent on robbing your car they will find out anyway!

i think people are gonna be more aware of the cost of running these cars now when the new tax regime comes out and also the price of petrol. anyone that doesn't care about the cost of tax or petrol can probably afford a new boxster anyway

I think what you mean is all the 98 Boxters are advertised at 25 - 26k. And I really don't see how you can compare a 911 Turbo with a boxter!

Reasons I wouldn't buy from this ad are much the same as the others - the photos look dodgy and it reads (and photos look) like a trade ad. It looks like a UK import so people will query it's history (esp with all this talk of UK write offs). It has an obscured reg so people will question VRT payments on it. IThe fact it's photo'd in the UK makes ppl wonder if teh car is in the country and if so how old are teh fotos (and by extension what is teh current condition).

In addition there are a number of other boxters advertised - one (uncleared VRT) at 10k less. The cars at the same price as yours are all from dealers, implying warrenty, proven history and a level of come back (always nice when stumping up 25K!).

Finally the tan leather interior is very much a personal thing and I personally find the colour combos of the other cars more appealing.

It's a specialist car at a poor time of the year. Get some decent, local and recent photos, re-write the ad so you sound less like a trader and clear up the date mismatches. Then it's make your mind up time. Do you tough it out and wait for a buyer at your price? You can - I waited three or four months to sell my last call and for a specialist car the right buyer is bound to be out there, even though you may be hanging on till July. Or you could bite the bullet and undercut the dealers by 3 - 4K and accept that a more realistic value on teh car - for a quick sale - may be closer to 22k.

    Open market selling price below.

    MAKE: PORSCHE
    MODEL: BOXSTER
    VERSION: 2.5 02DR / CONVERTIBLE / MANUAL / PETROL ONLY /
    MILEAGE: 62500 MILES

The information requested in respect of the vehicle shown is indicated below.
DATE OF FIRST REGISTRATION(MM/YY): APRIL 1998
OPEN MARKET SELLING PRICE: (applicable on enquiry date) €12536

VRT on a similar UK import would be €3760

Here is similar one in UK for £8250 or a 2000 model for £10795
I think you really need to be realistic about price.

That '98 one works out at a tad over €11k. All in could be landed incl VRT for €15k.

Roughan, as amadeus pointed out asking price does not mean selling price.

You said '98 boxters are going for 25-26k. I'd say they're going nowhere at that price, especially as they can be imported for €10k less.

First rules of pricing, understand the market and understand the competition.

Dealers can ask for more money because they'll service and valet the car, do remedial repairs and stand over the car for whatever amount of time. For that they charge a premium, which people are happy to pay. You are basing your price on them, when in fact they are not your true competition as you are not really offering the same product (service & warranty).

Your real competition is from the private seller in Meath who's undercutting you by almost 7k, or the cars that Mylow is showing that can be brought in from the UK for 8 - 12k less than your asking price.

So if you really want to sell in a short time frame drop your asking price. Or sit it out and be willing to wait 3 - 6 months (or more) for it to go. I know of one 911 in Mayo that sat unsold for over a year because the owner had it overvalued whereas mine (priced to slightly undercut other private sellers) was gone with cash in my hand inside 10 days.

Final point - you say in the ad: "owner buying another Boxster". That does kind of beg the question "well, what's wrong with this one, why is he selling it...?"!

    Was it on MO plates?

I can't remember off the top of my head but I think it was on ZV plates; a early 70's 2.7 which he was looking for about 16k for, even though it needed welding to the (IIRC) rear suspension. I put mine up for 15, sold it for 13 and cleared a profit on teh price I bought it for, so happy days!

Roughan - the fact that you are buying a newer one isn't clear in the ad, again I'm just saying it as I read it.
