Just got a text telling me there is a hunting poll on Irish Times on-line.

Cant seem to find it? Only Poll I can find is about high-rise developments in Dublin:confused:

Might it be an idea for anyone planning to vote in this poll (NO!, I hope), that you copy the link from here and paste it into another browser window?

This will prevent the Shooting board from showing up as the 'linked from' site on the poll's server, thus removing the anti's 'orchestrated campaign' excuse when the poll goes against them.

Here's a plain text version of the link, copy'npaste into another browser window-

    edited to add-
It would appear that, in the grand tradition of Irish polls, it's possible to vote 'Early & Often' on this poll.
No that I would advocate such a thing. ;)

Running at 71% no, 29% yes at the moment.

    Keep it up!

I think its horseback hunting only.
That an assault on Ireland's favourite mammal is carried out for entertainment makes fox-hunting especially despicable
I actually laughed at that part.

    Now at 76/24

    This quote:
However, the idea of the fox as an agricultural threat has long been dispelled. Both the Department of Agriculture and the National Parks and Wildlife Service concur, for example, that foxes play no significant role, if any, in lamb mortality.

Is total bull. The Dept. say no such thing and the reference is to a thesis done in 1991 based on a survey in 1984 which only included lowland farms when the majority of predation takes place in upland areas.

83% against a ban at the moment, that'll be a nice statistic to be able to quote.

Anyone actually spend any time on the ICABS website itself? It's a bit... awe-inspiring... That people involved in this organisation run the country chills the blood a little. It's just shockingly ill-informed at the very least. What I would like to know is, if they're just disseminating misinformation, and the way they pick their false facts suggests that this is the case, why do they keep doing it when in discovering their information, they've also come to realise that it's false? I just don't get it, personally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

ICABS are rather dodgy, to be honest. Any group who'll attempt to get a woman fired for sending an email in support of the ward union to her local TD is distinctly not a group that ought to be supported, regardless of their aims.

I actually look at the "opositions" websites a lot, "know thy enemy etc"

They appear to be very, very, very highly strung people. They need to chill, relax, calm their jets. There is no middle ground??

How about a compromise to stag/fox hunting:

Chase the fox/stag with the hounds into a line of guns (Sunday fox drive a la cheveaux

Chase the fox/stag to within 300 meters dismount dispatch with 223 (fox hunting a la buffalo bill)

The so called ripping apart doesn't come into it, fox population contolled a compromise all happy.....:D;):D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Whatever about being dodgy, but how do they manage to continue with their vitriol when they know it's all bull?

Also, anyone else find it hilarious that they have a problem with mink hunting? Not big duck fans then I guess. :p

What I have a major problem with is the alarmist, emotive language they tend to use in their statements and arguments. If I wanted to be made weep, I'd go to a friggin' opera. Keep the politics political, thank you very much.

ICABS are a dangerous organisation. Make no mistake about that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

See, I have no problems with having opposition to my position. What I find repugnant is when my opposition will stoop to disseminate falsehoods, use deliberately emotive language and play on the feelings of ignorant Joe Public, where I like to keep my arguments logical and, frankly, valid. Unfortunately, this is an uncommon position, unpopular and will not stand up to good old ignorant Joe.

Why oh Why , would anyone post that message in the
hunting section of a shooting forum ?

It looks like a deliberate attempt to cause an argument.
    Unworthy behavior from a Moderator.

    A little disappointing really.

Judging by the time of the night/morning that the vote has turned around and where some of the comments are coming from I don't think the anti support is from Irish people.
Is there a chance that this could be the FIRST vote to actually go the anti's way?

Should be a nice night for lamping tonight lads - and since us hunting folk won't be able to sleep with worry for at least a few weeks it looks like the fox population will have to pay for our insomnia - might even take tomorrow off and go for a dig.
    See what ye've done :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Fox-hunting, or any animal blood sports for that matter, is barbaric. Imagine this: Aliens landed on Planet Earth and decided that human-hunting would be a nice little sport. They spotted Ms. Kate Hoey and agreed that she would make an excellent prey. I wonder how Ms. Hoey would feel. (Please disregard my earlier post. I mistook Mr. Hans Zomer as the proponent for the No vote. My sincerest apologies to Mr. Zomer.
    Dear lord

Nearly forgot DaveMcG - the ears of the dog in your avatar look cropped - your anti bum chums won't like that sinful carry-on
I must get on to gomely&co to have you investigated for cruelty to animals.

Was out doing a reccy on new ground last night & this new place is crawling with the vermin.

So, rifle at the ready for tonight, buddy primed. Gonna try to exceed the 84 shot last year by double. That's a lot of tails at €4 a pop.

    Good stuff Trojan.

I've watched the vote over the last 30mins and it's risen in our favour by 4% - confirms my suspicion of foreign intervention last night!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭spideog7

    Sorry :
    That's a lot of tails at €4 a pop.

Are you getting a bounty on foxes? Or using a very expensive round?

NARGC bounty €4 a tail. Magpies, Grey/Crow etc €1 a wing or head (according to my last Gunclub AGM).

    Grey/Crow etc €1 a wing or head
So €3 if you are smart. :)

    WTF !!!
NARGC Bounty, Since when ?? I'm gonna have to see about this, maybe it's only in certain areas ? I could be makin a mint !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

At €4 a tail, you could turn a neat profit, even with a round like the Swift. Intriguing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭J.R.

I've been a member of NARGC for the past 19 years and never heard of them paying a bounty on vermin - I know they collect figures for vermin at end of season & present prizes to winning clubs - any more info?......links?.....etc. Thanks.
