Static exercise??

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question, but is there such as thing as "static" excercise?
I am on a New Years mission to shift some blubber, so I've totally changed my diet, am getting regular exercise and I am beginning to feel the difference whcih pleases me immensely.
However, as I spend 10 hours plonked on my backside at my desk (and anotehr two plonked in my car), I wonder if there are any exercises that I could do while working to help with my overall aims? In particular, I'd like to work on muscles in my stomach and backside. If you strain and then release muscles in reps while in a stationary position, would it have an benefit as part of an overall fitness routine? Or is that just a waste of time?

Any advice would be welcome on any exercise that can be done from a desk.
    thanks

Hmmm....me thinks you might be over complicating things slightly.

Muscles will be forced to change when they are worked under tension.....if this was not the case we would all get bigger and stronger when we walk down the street!

My advice would be to work hard when you are working out, then enjoy your rest when you can!

You are thinking of isometrics. Boru is a member here who is big into them, has written a new book on them which I am reading at the moment.

Might be too late to get a free review copy but his site has info too.
