Just starting back to my fitness program after the christmas. For health reasons before christmas I was doing 30 mins on the excersice bike 5 days a week but wasnt really seeing any results, two years ago I changed my diet and lost 2 stone, (im 6'ft 5') from nothing, I've sort of hung around the 19 stone mark now for 8 months and im looking to get down to 16, which I'd say is ideal. Its a big ask but can someone recommend where to start. I'm even considering joining up a gym next month.

Swimming is good for burning fast and cycling. If you're looking for just normal exercises that is.

    Hi OP,

There is no 'best' exercise for fat loss - just what you find works best for you. You haven't given details on how long you were doing the 30 mins x 5 times a week cycling, but I suspect it may not have been at a progressively higher intensity each time, i.e. not enough to challenge your body and make it respond in the way you wanted (fat loss).

If you are going to join a gym, I recommend you start weight training. It is a great fat burner, muscles burns calories even when you're sitting on the couch, and will of course give you a great body shape! Is it something that appeals to you?

Re cycling/cardio, the main concern is making sure you are upping the intensity and difficulty levels on a frequent basis.

The main factor affecting fat loss, however, is diet. You can lose fat (and quite often muscle) on a calorie controlled, good diet, but it is a lot harder to lose fat exercising on a poor diet. As you would expect, weight training will build and preserve muscle while you are restricting calories, which is another fantastic reason to choose to weight train.

The key is to get your diet clean (read the stickies at top of forum) and to exercise hard, consistently, at whatever exercise you choose. This will get you results, and getting results will keep you motivated. There really is nothing more to it than that.

Go back to the diet you done when you lost the weight, add in some resistance training and some good cardio,

ps, swimming is crap unless your a good swimmer-most people are not capable of burning enough calories through swimming because of there crappy swimming techique!!

This is very true. If you can do the butterfly stroke at a high intensity, go for it. Most people however tend to do a snail-pace breast-stroke that burns less calories than sleeping!

HashSlinging - here's an article on German Volume Training that you might find interesting. It's advocated by the likes of Charles Poliquin, as well as by many others.

    Hope that helps
