Holy Sh1t I can't walk anymore

After a very sedate few months and I mean very sedate, no exercise at all mostly staying in bed reading, taking the bus to the shops up the road I decided a couple of weeks ago to walk up to the shops for a bit of exercise and holy Sh1t about 80 yards up the road my legs totally gave out, I couldn't walk anymore  well I was stranded but after a rest I somehow managed to get home. It's a pretty serious wakeup call when you can't walk anymore so for the past two weeks I've been trying to get back into some sort of shape. The first few days were pure hell as I tried to work through it, I've gotten a little bit better but now I seem to be stuck and not improving at all, I can walk about 100 yards up the road but then my calfs give up, I can continue "walking" but only by taking big stomping steps if you know what I mean, if you try walking yourself without using your calfs you will understand. Well I've been out walking a good bit, up to a couple of miles but the same thing just happens - my calfs give up after 100 yards and I have to take stomping steps. Well I don't think there's much point in continuing to walk with stomping steps as it's not exercising my calfs, so I'm a bit stuck as to what to do, I've tried walking untill they quit then resting then walking again etc etc but I'm not Improving - I have an exercise bike and for the past couple of days I've been doing 40 minutes as intense as I can, It beats me how I can do 40 minutes on the bike but can't walk down the road, I guess it must exercise different muscles though getting off the bike my legs felt the same as after a long walking session so it beats me.

Anyway if anyone can suggest something to try as this is getting me pretty miserable, today I was thinking what could exercise my calfs and I figured just going up onto tippy toes again and again would do it so the plan for tonight is go for a walk and try forcing use of my calfs - then 40 minutes on the bike and then try going up and down on tippy toes untill I can do no more - rest then go again. Thanks for listening and if you have any suggestions I'd be very gratefull.

I've ahad a calf injury recently so I know how difficult it is.

I suggest an appointment with a physio before doing anything else, they can give you good exercies to help your calves and can also give you good massages to help the muscle tissue recover. I also had accupuntre from the physio which was also quite helpful.

Your physio may also give you crutches or a heel raise to help you walk a bit easier without putting all your weight through your calf muscles.

I find that when I use the exercise bike, my legs do be quite tired the next day.

So maybe ease up on the exercise bike a bit. After doing nothing for 2 weeks 40 minutes seems like overdoing it.

How about walking for 15 minutes in the morning and later in the afternoon/evening do 15 minutes on the exercise bike?

I would suggest also that you see your doctor if things don't improve soon.

thats mad... thats a crazy story, the average sedate person walks at least 500 steps a day I think (trying to remember the stat) thats to the fridge and back basically, or to the jacks... of you cant walk 100yards you must have something wrong with your calfs... what weight are you?... if you lay in bed for 2 weeks your muscles wouldnt waste bad enough for you to be unable to walk after a day or so "warm-up". get yourself checked out. if you can cycle for 40mins you must be reasonably fit so Im guessing youre not morbidly obese, it must a muscular or musculosketetal problem, it could be tendons.

I'm 11 stone, not fat at all, I guess my muscles have just lost all their power after sitting on my ass for months, I've been going up on tippy toes all day so hopefully this will help, I'll keep at the bike but I'm pretty sure it's only exercising my thigh's so it won't do any good at getting me walking normally again

at eleven stone you really shouldnt have suffered that much power loss, have you literally been sitting on your hands for the last 5 years?

i would recommend you see a doctor,

I was on complete bed rest for 4 months once and didn't have any similar problems. I think you need to go ask a physio or GP for some advice on this one.
