Propane in B&Q

So I went to my local B&Q this morning to buy propane on my way to hrta, and they've put the price up, it's now €16.10, it used to be only €10.94, I asked at customer service and apparently it's always been that price according the till.

This was B&Q on the belgard road, looks like it's not so cheap to buy propane any more, ill be finding a cheaper supplier or just start buying more green gas.

Anyone else seen this in other B&Q stores?

Yup, I noticed it starting to go up too. Did a little digging. Apparently all gas prices have gone up due to it being more popular now that oil has begun its decendance into scarcity. All gasses have raised in price but its only when you're buying smaller cans that you notice it because bulk purchases such as home heating don't have the same levys on them.

It's been steadily rising by a euro here and ther for about a year now. It used to be about 6 bucks a can. I went to get some a few weeks back as I was starting to run out and the price threw me off. Bought two cans of Green instead of one can of propane

Damn, and I never even got to buy a bottle.

We're all going to have to start using duster gas now.

Somebody said churctown stores were cheaper...will check the price next time I'm passing.

Also, in BandQ you need to be 21 to purchase propane, just to let you know.

    LB

Or just use the 11kg bottles.....:p

I got mine in swords B&Q about 2-3 weeks ago KD and it was 14quid, i remember seeing it for a tenner not long ago too., It still works out cheaper than green gas though, theres more gas presurized into the strong propane tank than on the flimsy little green gas tanks.,
you have to be 18 to buy it., I was asked for ID and i dont even look young.,lol

It is, I tried to buy it a while back and the assisant wouldn't sell it to me so I had to go and get my dad(had gone ahead while I qued) to come back and pay for it. What am i gonna do, build a bomb and blow up the toilet department?

Its not the buying gas thats illegal its the sign saying 21's.

According to the equality act (and Ambro might correct me on this) but the accepted age of adulthood is 18 years. Refusing someone a drink, cigarettes, a drivers licence or ajnything else isnt allowed and to have a blanket ban on persons in a certain age bracket is illegal.

So good news for anyone who has been turned away for not being 21 in a pub.

Yea, I got you on that.

When was that enacted? This was probably 6 or 7 months ago now that I think about it that they told me 21.

has always bee the case, if your 18 then your an adult and cant be discriminated against based on your age., the only asked that i was over 18 in B&Q though,

yep, just plain old propane but you need an adapter to use it in the mags though.,

Technically you can legally drink in a pubs beer garden from the age of four, you just can't buy a drink, so turning anyone away from a pub isn't technically allowed after 9pm.

The big blue bottles for blowtorches. Don't confuse it with Mapp gas.

    Mapp = Bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

MAPP gas is used for gas welding and brazing actually so thats a confirmed no-no there.

The brand B&Q stock is called Bernzomatic. They colour code their bottles so the blue ones are the ones you want. Marked as propane above the logo on the label. 400g gas cylinder. About 12 inches tall and 3 in diameter. Located in the plumbing section of B&Q, beside the blowtorches, which is usually at the end of the aisle rather than the middle (all their stores stock the same way).

I can't describe it anymore clearly than that

Silly question, But how is the Moosberg on gas?

Bloody H-E-Double-Hockeysticks! I just asked a question on the fuel effecincy of a shotty? We're through the looking glass here people!

You'd be forgiven for it in this crazy world. With propane prices the way they are, the goalposts for silly questions have been moved.

However, if you ask about 'nade efficiency, then you can start worrying

yea, duster is pretty weak alright

mossberg is grand on gas, propane works well in it, still waiting for the temperature to pick up a bit to start getting some better range

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

Not even close. Duster is very low power. It's not even as good as butane if I remember right.

I've yet to buy a bottle but 16 Euros does not sound too bad.
I'm still using a bottle my father gave me.
He had initially thought the Mapp gas would do too as it came out
    around the same pressure.

This is what it looks like (label is different in the more modern bottles)

Wow, that is old! I haven't seen those labels since around 99/00. I used to buy it then for brazes and it looked like that.

16 bucks doesn't sound too bad but this time last year it was 8 and a can of Green "doesn't smell like rats p*ss" Gas is only a tenner. The other advantage of Green Gas is that it's got lubrication added to the mix already, no need to add more.

It's not the preassure of the gas in the container. It's how quickly it expands once released from it.
Explosive coefficent, I think it's called.

I'd add a squirt of silicone to every other fill, especially in cold weather. You might lose an fps or two, but the insulation it puts on the seals chamber hopup etc means you never get the 'Cloud of gas and embarassment'...either that or stick to double-tapping at most.

It is possible to over lubricate though. I usually add 2 drops every 4-5 mags using propane and every 12 using Green/134a. Either that or run a mag of maintenance gas through as the 10th mag.

true, too much can make the hop up slippy and render it useless if it cant put friction on the BBs.,

Off topic, but did they not ammend that or did a case not end up allowing for management discretion in letting certain age groups into places, I still know of a number of places that say "members only" or "over 21's only" and get away with it, I do remember getting in a huff about it once and going to Pearse Garda station and making them print off the legislation and send a Garda back with me to a place that had said members only to me, I was sober and I'm just bitter enough to put myself to that kind of bother to prove a point when the mood takes me, but I seem to remember quoting the law to someone and being told it was changed recently enough.

On topic, even with the price of propane gone up, it still seems to be decent enough value, how many fills or a standard pistol mag would you get per tank?

Ah I was only messing, I know what you mean, but those grenade gas holders usually only take about 4/5 mag fills. If you were in any way heavy on the pistol trigger then you'd need to take a few of them and they're not overly cheap.

Ahh, but most people come back to the safe zone and just blast away at a target because their GBBs sat in their holster all day.

As far as I know the law still stands which means that provided you are over 18 they had better have a bloody good reason to refuse you anything. Its the same thing with Travellers or any other minority group (which by definition is any group of people smaller than the total population by all accounts). If you are refused a service, entry etc based solely on your membership with a specific group then the premises is breaking the law.

Its an EU directive rather than a local law so I would figure that the EU law would take precedence. "I would figure" being the operative term there since I tend to leave legalism up to Ambro.

I know what you mean about going to hte cops though. I got into a barney with the Temple Bar residents association over the "move along" orders demanded against the kids there.

Yeah that is true, in their case it would make sense. I like drawing my pistol though so for me having a can in my bag is handy. I'm getting one of those grenade/gas holders though to have on the field. It sucks having a speedloader full of ammo and no gas to use them with. I usually carry two filled speedloaders at all times so one of those would make sense too.

Incidentally, has anyone ever used one?

Interesting, I sense a self righteous march to the office of the local constabulary coming on the next time I'm sober and refused entry from somewhere, here's hoping I get a nice guard again and I don't just get told to eff off.

16 something in B&Q now, i got it a few weeks ago for 14ish., this is taking the p*ss., Im trying to figure a way of refilling bottles of it though because the 5ft tall tanks are very cheap compared to the small canisters.,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

vtec: i got an adapter from an american site a while back which allows connection of small ones to big ones for refilling, but it needs another adapter because american propane tanks have a different fitting, paul should be picking one up this week for me, if he does ill see about doing refills at hrta.

cool, thats a good idea. i didnt know there was anything available to buy, I thought id have to make it. :) if it can be bought then i have a way to remove the smell in the process if refilling to small bottles.,

this is a wee bit off topic...so kill it if it is KD,

what do you do with the old propane tanks...

seems kinda dangerous to me to lob them in the bin or recycle bin...??

anyone know. to date i have just kept them...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

Same here, i've just kept mine until now, although i was keeping them with refilling in mind, i think your local recycling centre should be able to take them. Failing that ring your local corporation/council's waste department and ask, they should be able to point you in the right direction
