Yeah, I've been following this for a while. I hope to God they don't screw it up.

Homeworld meets Civ/Gal-Civ. It could be superb.

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

I've pre-purchased it too from Totalgaming.net/Stardock but haven't got the Beta - I thought they closed that before Xmas. How did you get it?

First saw a previwe of this about 6 months ago and want to get it. Not that I have much time to play games anymore. (making dinner,Kids and work get in the way) Anyone have any idea of the specs needed to run it? I find it more comfortable to use my laptop for gaming but the PC has the better graphics card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

    what are your specs?
my processor is a 3.2ghz single core & my gfx card is an old 6800 256mb & the beta runs perfect so im hoping the final will run pretty smooth

The laptop is only a 128mb card with no pixel shader. Need to upgrade quickly, fecking pixel shader is getting more popular these days. And yes I do realise that this is crap for most modern games but I find I prefer gameplay to graphics.

    The PC has Geforce 256mb.

Bet my phone could probably run Starcraft now!!!! :D

Tying to get my kids into Starcraft. They haven't developed the mind to comprehend zerg or battlecruisers rushs yet, maybe when they are both teenagers..........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

now kids, you have learned the basics of star craft lets have a lan game

    5 mins later

did i forget to tell you what a zerg rush was?...ooops :)

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

Sins has saveable multiplayer doesn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

Not that far from the truth............tough love.........however the older guy quickly got the hang of it. Just need to 11 yers old to catch up. The are used to the slower pace of C&C.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Battlecruiser rush? pah, fairy ineffective, quick tech to carrier can be nasty though, especially on maps like bluestorm :)

Still playing starcraft now and again, awesome game, lost my CD key for ages though and ended up forgetting account details so lost my record :( had to start again from 0-0-0.
    [/OT]

Loved GalCiv, will definately be giving this one a shot at some point when I have free time, probably over easter, if its anything like GalCiv it will be a time sponge to rival Civilisation or Rome:TW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

got the full copy last night & i only had half an hour to play it :(

Its very smooth and polished compared to the beta i played & the new races seem very interesting and different

hopefully i can give the game a good bash tonight

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

Just played through the tutorials. Looks promising. Not quite as polished as Homeworld but way more depth. Lots to learn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

A European retail release is pending - I assume you folks that are playing it are doing so through Stardock download? Any issues or problems with that?

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

Bloody hell this is a good game. AI is really good.

i had no problems with the install

on the ai yeah it sure is challenging, i was running around with 4 capital ships & a few other ships thinking i was the gods bollix until i arrive at their homeworld where they had only 1 capital ship but about 5 ship factories pumping out the small attack ships (there were about 30 of them) i got my ass handed to me :(

i hear they have reduced the durability on the siege frigate's in the new patch

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

I had a long game yesterday and managed to have my ass handed to me on a plate by the AI, because I took certain risks & assumed the AI was dumb.

Has anyone tried multiplayer yet? I imagine that is where this game really shines.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 81,083 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

This game certainly sounds interesting,In order to enjoy it,would one have to be into games like homeworld etc?I'v never played homeworld though or any space stratergy game for that matter :-/,do ye think I'd enjoy it?

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

If you like RTS games and say, Civilization then yeah I think you'll love it.

Take a look at these reviews here and here & decide for yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

wouldnt mind trying the multiplayer if your up for a game?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,067 ✭✭✭FunkyChicken

Looks class but I hear that it really needs a lot of time to get to grips with it and also the sheer amount of time it takes to finish a game. Was talking to a friend a few nights ago who said it took him 6 hours to finish one game!

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

Yeah its pretty epic alright. I'm playing one with 4 solar systems at the moment and there's no end in sight at the moment. I'm looking forward to getting home tonight and launching a massive fleet at my enemies. Its great!

Its not out in europe?sure its not?

Doesn't seem to be, but it can be bought on Stardock for $45 which equates to 25 euro or so.

I think the game is pretty good alright, one thing that I was disappointed about though was the lack of wreckages left over from destroyed ships, or damaged hulls after fights. The idea of being able to salvage a Capital Ship for a % of its cost after a battle was something I thought would have been a great addition to the game, something along the lines of Supreme Commander and being able to reclaim destroyed units etc.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 10,005 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tenger

Stardock is a download site right? I have wireless broadband but its not that 'broad'. Wouldn't want to see how long it takes to download. Any idea of a european release date?

One of the races has that technology once you research it. It's nothing like using a constructor to harvest it but your capital ships harvest the remains. It'd be nice to see a few wrecks but with the limited size of the gravity wells your going to have a pile up after awhile :)

The last update was No sins for europe because us euros just don't like them futureisticy type things.

There is an option to purchase it and get it shipped to you from stardock. Seems to be an extra 5 dollars (45 dollars) the online only is 40 dollars. If you know someone with it you could always get the game files and just buy the serial from stardock. Just register it and let it create a few folders and then throw the files you have in. There's an archive option when you right click on the game in SDcentral. The game is only about 900mb anyway.

Got my mitts on this one, real shame it wont be in Europe any time soon, if at all, this really is a fantastic game.

Its like a mix between SW:Empire at War, and GalCiv, with a very effective, if simple combat system. Have only played 2 games so far, a 1v1 on chicken sh*t mode (easy) and a 2v2 on medium, planning to get a few LAN battles on the go at some point to get some fine back stabbing that inevitably results in harsh words, all good :)

The ships are blatently stolen from Babylon5 at times though, ie:

Theres a fair few others, theres a centauri Centri fighter in there too.

But see, when they pile up, then you fly in and salvage ;)

the AI is rather disappointing, looking forward to trying it online though.

Me vs 3 ai's on medium = fairly easy.

Me vs AI1 vs AI2 vs AI3 on hard = even easier

Going to try a 10player ai game later in a 2vs3vs3 with me being one of the two

ps: be aware in single player that unless AI are locked into seperate teams they *generally* ignore each other to gang up on you

Second the notion of a B5 mod, would be great to see, the engine would really suit it, especially with the gravity wells system, could represent jump gate beacons.

AI is crap then? great

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

    Not crap, just...limited.

Some people seem to find it quite challenging though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Just downloading it now from stardock.

    Should be epic!

As much as I love the "new car smell" from games, thumbing through manuals, etc. I have a sinful amount of old games lying around and think digital downloads may be the way forward for eco-me!

Really cool game, haven't even scratched the surface yet.

One small question: Is it possible to get a .pdf manual for it?

No! And I've sent you a detailed PM explaining why asking for such things is not permitted on these forums. Shocked thats what I am...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭BKtje

meh, i aint played this in multiplayer yet but it doesnt really do it for me in single player mode. I find it very hard to see what what ships exactly are attacking me and what ships i have. I guess that just takes time to learn though.

    Must give multiplayer a try.

I first saw this at an overnight LAN, there was 10+ ppl playing it and decided to give the tutorials a go first, didnt think much of it at the time, at all, but after playing with a mate online it really shines.

Anyone care to give me an idiots guide to hosting games? Ive tried messing with port forwarding and uPnP but to no avail... using a Zyxel 623 R, iirc.
