New year fitness buzz - creation of the media ?

All I seem to read, see and hear about in the media for the last fortnight was how lazy and overweight we all are which lends itself to pushing people into gyms etc. out of guilt.

Is there a motive behind this to push consumerism in the winter months - gym memberships, fitness equipment, new sports clothing, running shoes ?
80% of which in this country doesn't see the light of day from mid Feb onwards.

What's to stop encouraging people to keep looking after themselves all year around, why the month of preaching to everyone in January and nothing for the rest of the year?

Its just the way the world is. The reason January works for the 'fitness buzz' is because traditionally in December everyone over indulges and puts on a bit of weight that they want shifted by January... Step in Gyms etc. But stuff like this happens all year round. In all sports, during wimbledon you'll see tennis clubs having an increase in subscriptions, during the British Open golf Clubs will be packed. Its just a flavour of the month thing for most people and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

it's just a play on the new year's resolution thing where everyone is trying to make their life more enjoyable and for most that would include not being a fat ass
