Whats the story with the switch over to SD? Seeing the 350/400/450 range is where they test out new things, I wonder if they are planning to switch all models to SD in future..!!

    AH!!!

    I only have my 400D 4 months!

Nice feature set, as largely predicated, though Im suprised they pushed the res above the 40D.

Also they've switched to SD cards, smaller I guess?

Im also guessing the existing battery grip (I just bought last week!) wont work on this due to the battery change - grr!

And from the picture, it comes with an IS lens as standard...

I think we knew this was coming soon, looks good, i'm happy with my 350 though.

    interesting...

although not massively impressed with the switch to SD. They better not switch all new models to SD, I and everyone else has a bloody fortune in CF cards built up.

    spot metering too, interesting alright.

actually.. before I go any further... "Damn Canon, where's the 5D replacement?"

Right... now with that out of my system, I'm off to buy a 5D.

Looks yummy :) Interesting that they would make so many changes in one model... new battery and SD... granted they're not terribly expensive, but it'd still make some reluctant to upgrade...

Was hoping also that this one would have a rotating LCD on it :(

(quick look at tech specs - no, it'll still be a 40D for Calina).

If you want a 5D mkII then Gimme a Hell Yeah!

Very nice, but when I do get around to replacing the 350D it will be with a 40D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

I guess with the 1D MkIII it has CF and SD slots. Maybe moving everything to SD is a natural progression for Canon.

Mind you, I did a Canon survey the other day (based on my 40D purchase), and it asked about CF/SD, and I said one of the reasons I went with the 40D was the fact that I already had CF cards.

Maybe they are only looking to move the lower end cameras to SD? We can only hope. Mind you, SD are cheap too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

The advantage with SD cards is most laptop installed card readers read them. In fact, on my laptop, the only thing the card reader doesn't read is CF. I suspect Canon are being slightly pushed on that front.

I'll also be one who replaces a 350D with a 40D or fingers crossed for this time next year a 50D :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

That didn't take long to upgrade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

pshaw... waiting for a 70D myself. Want a prediction of the spec?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 311 ✭✭decsramble

I read somewhere that Canon have an 18 month upgrade cycle now? So if you just bought a 400D dont be annoyed, hold on and in 18 months you can get a 500D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

    It's circa 18-24 months, yeah.

Thing is, if you have a 400D, the odds are you'll be going for a 50D next time up.

the irritation is that you'll be upgrading every three or four years anyway for the rest of your life unless they stop making technological advances in both computers and cameras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Goddamit it now I'm looking on Kea photo etc at prices of the 40D, must keep away from these threads from now onwards!

Ah crap...just received my 400d in the post yesterday!!!!

Typical!!...although it's still a cracking camera....as i'm new to all this my one gripe when researching camera and lenses was that all lens should have image stabilisation at an affordable price. It should be standard in all fairness...

It's like drugs. It's starts simply enough with "This is a 350D. It's cheap and does everything you want". Next thing you know you wake up several years later lying in a pile of old lenses and discarded bodies wondering what happened to your bank balance and when the 1D Mark IV is coming out.

Buy a camera with built in IS then ;)

Why? There are many situations when IS would hinder a good photo, rather than help. But I guess it would depend on wheather the IS is mechanical or digital. IS doesn't really help a lot in sports photography. In the vast majority of shots, IS is turned off.

For landscapes and portrait images, yeah, IS would work well.

I guess it depends what you want/need IS for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,744 ✭✭✭deRanged

I reckon that Canon figure that the vast majority of purchasers of the 400D range either upgrade to the 40D range+ or don't upgrade at all. I can't see why you'd go 400 -> 450, specially now that they made the memory cards, grips and batteries incompatible.
I know that when I upgrade it'll be to the 40D or whatever is out then.

great more ****ing options to the beginner.........give my head peace

    when is this due out?

I'm happy with my 350D. If I were to upgrade it would be an upgrade rather than getting the same model with slightly better specs. The 40D seems to be the logical progression from the entry level 300/350/400 bodies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

Strangely enough I haven't felt any urge to upgrade either. I have a 30D and I seem to be quite happy with it. I really hope I'm not losing my love of gear porn!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

it's not loss of gear porn love, there's just no simply must have upgrades at the moment.. Sure, you could upgrade to a 1Ds 3.. if you had 6 grand burning a hole in your pocket. The 30D is a great camera.

How and ever, that shouldnt stop the gear porn lust for increasing your collection of quality glass :D

only a 1D mk III for me !!!!

    ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Now that I have a 1D MkIII and a 40D, I can't see needing a new camera body for at least 2 years to come.

    But lenses ... that's another issue. :D

so does this mean that all canon's future DSLR's will be using SD cards?

*looks slyly at stock of CF cards*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

I doubt it. Too many pros out there have stacks of CF for their 1Ds and such. I can't see them changing the xxD and xD lineup to use SD any time soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭peter1892

The use of SD cards probably puts the 450D in market position for people looking to upgrade from compact cameras:

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08012404canoneos450dhandson.asp
They both offer advantages for the first-time DLSR buyers that will make up most of the market for this camera, particularly those with SD-compatible compacts

I'm happy with my 30D (but won't buy another EFS lens, want to go full frame some day!).

I am planning on improving my glass situation. Damn this forum to hell for making me want f2.8 L lenses!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

and f1.8 and f1.4 and maybe someday, an f1.2. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,368 ✭✭✭Covey

Or even a f1.0, if you can get your hands on one:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

that's some dangerous thinking there... I thought I better stop at f1.2 in case I got too excited thinking about the whole thing
