Nice post. Lol at how's he not doing everything "right". Very nice timing considering the current climate.

Actual lol at this tho... "Not every guys wants to be a, ya know, 500lb bodybuilder".

EDIT: I do find it hard to believe he trains like that all the time, and that he looks like he does now because of it. I would suspec he spends some time doing more conventional lifting and switches to the circuits as fights get closer.

I agree with you Hanley. I was thinking that when I was watching the video, but my heart was racing at the thought of a renowned MMA head doing roughly the same lifts as me.

Yeah this vid is quite a few years old - I remember at the time I went and gave it a go after watching it. It's a bit tougher than you think if you're not used to complexes. There's a more recent vid of his training on the UFC's all access programme. Randy seems to always be doing the most up to date, in vogue training. Even when he's talking about his food he was going on about acid-base balance etc. when that was only just coming onto the fitness scene.

Can't find the vid now but look out for it. Wanderlei was even better - he does workouts with a snorkel taped to his face to limit his oxygen! :D

I tried this the other day and found it very difficult. So I will try it again tonight.

Anyone else have any advice/experience with it?

    His technique is horrendous

It's not great, but it's certainly not "horrendous".

If he was a total beginner to weight training then you could say it's not great.

    His technique is horrendous

I dare ya to tell him that.

I don't like the idea of taking a routine that some professional sports star is using it and just copying it for the sake of it being used by someone famous. It's the equivalent of me wearing the same prescription glasses as Randy.

That said, when I first saw this I way back when I couldn't resist trying it.

It's hilarious when begrudgery even makes it onto the internet.

The guy is an elite athlete, in better shape than every single person on this forum - in his forties, and people still feel the need to chirp up with some criticism.

Maybe, just maybe he feels that his "endurance for grappling" circuit should be more about endurance for grappling than scoring points with nameless people on an obscure discussion forum over what they perceive to be good form.

It's not an instructional video, it's a snippet of some of his training.

Complexes are extremely tough metabolically, once you're into them your form is not going to be textbook. And it doesn't have to be, you're dealing with a very light weight.

Whatever he does, and whether his technique is good or bad, he is doing it right because he is an outstanding athlete. Now I wonder if he'll respond to my mail asking him to adopt me as his son....

Finds its way onto the internet!? Begrudgery was invented on the internet!

There's something that doesn't sit right with me for this video.

Maybe it's the "relaxed" way he goes about his routine - perhaps that's just for the camera. Maybe it's the "horrendous" form (iirc his squats are really shallow, haven't watched the vid in a few months)

I saw Randy training in a video a while ago (could have been before he first fought Tito) and he was doing Oly lifts, shooting with someone holding a resistance band attached to him. Heavy back squats. That impressed me, but that could have been the inspirational music and editing of the clips, or the fact I was a lot more niaive of training back then.

Either way, there's something that doesn't sit quite right with me in this vid.

No matter how good you are there's always room for improvement. Just because somones professional/elite/world champion doesn't mean we can't offer constructive criticism.

I agree. I removed the good mornings and added overhead squats. By "I tried this " i meant tried a similar thing of a few sets of a fair few exercises done 8 times with a low weight barbell.

Colm OReilly> think that might have been a good few years back now that your thinking of.

I like his distinction between 'beach muscles and functional strength' - makes alot of sense and obviously works for him.

He wasnt always super trim though - go back a couple of years and you can see he was even a bit soft around the belly/love handle area.

But as someone else mentioned he does seem to approach his training differently now then he did then (and arguably different to alot of others in the sport). The above clip is dated and im sure it only makes up a very small part of his overall routine.

Remember discussing this and his diet routine with someone more knowledgeable then i recently. Apparently Couture wakes himself up during the night to drink a protein shake so that hes at his optimum for training in the morning. He liquidises alot of his food and it sounds like everything revolves around his training..

He does seem to have his detractors with some suggesting that hes cycling steroids but on a personal level I have alot of respect for him. He puts alot of people half his age to shame!

Because he's a world champion in a very physically demanding sport, was an olympic alternate for one of the toughest teams in another very physically demanding sport.

He is a professional elite level athlete - there are not very many of them floating around boards.ie.

Also before anyone chirps up with "I can run further/I can lift more/I have less body fat" it's fairly clear that I mean averaged over every reasonable definition of fitness.

Absolutely! Constructive criticism is always great, so I'm sure people are emailing him right now? Right? I doubt he's trawling the internet looking for feedback on a short video snippet he did for television a while back, so for it to be constructive he'd have to be told.

I had to ban him from SD/MA last month. I'm sure he's still lurking or even logging in with a new username.
