    Hi guys,

Just a quick question - has anybody else experienced any links between eating porridge and bad breath? I think it is giving me a dose of it. Quite annoying as I love the stuff and it is a solid part of my routine now.

    Thanks,
    Gman

No, I never had bad breath from the stuff. Too much protein can cause it though.

Porridge breath? LOL. Try brushing your teeth, its probably bad oral hygiene.

No reason why porridge would make your breath bang.Have you tried having a dental check-up in case you've got a gum problem?

In fairness, protein usually comes out in lethal gassy forms for me... not from the mouth though!

Don't think it's oral hygene. Since I noticed the problem I've been brushing three times a day. Not sure about gum disease - can I check that myself? What's a good remedy for it? I've been dropping things from my diet lately to see if it has any effect. Dropped porridge last week and problem seemed to go away. Wasn't at gym either though and my protein intake was lower than usual. Hmmmmm. Time to go back on the proteins and see if that reintroduces the problem. On a side note I learned a neat way to check for bad breath actually - lick the inside of your wrist and smell it. If it smells bad, your breath smells worse. Thanks for the help people!

Have you a white tounge at all? if so scrape and brush it with the toothbrush and use mouth wash.

Do you have heartburn? this is stomach acid and stomach acid and milk do not mix. I used to drink a LOT and would wake up with very acidic emtpy stomachs, if I downed milk it would coagulate and smelled rotten, it would actually make me sick, thats how I found out it coagulated (charming I know :D)

Gum disease usually starts when impacted food is left to build up in the gum margins and between the teeth, especially if tartar has formed too.It means that there's an infection going on under the gumline wheer you cant get at with a brush. You can prevent it with flossing but if its established you need to get your teeth cleaned by a dentist. You probably dont have this though as yyour gums would be bleeding too.It could be just a sour stomach ie loads of acid

White tongue in my experience is usually just a dehydrated tongue or how it looks after a night out on the piss.

Its a sign that things are not as they should be, scraping is treating the symptom, not the cause.

Just on the topic of porridge, how do I make it smooth? I hate when its sticky, and it makes it near impossible to eat with fruit.

Just vary the quantity of milk and oats. Try it with a cup of oats and two cups of milk. If that is too sticky, add more milk. If it is too runny reduce the milk.

If you cant be arsed cooking it,make it up with water in a pint glass and neck it that way.It tastes better if you add a scoop of whey though.

It's possible that that smell is coming from you stomach and not your mouth, brushing won't do a thing for you as the smell ain't there.

I've found too much protein can cause me problems. Boots used to sell a thing in their dental section, it was a pack of capsule's which you take two and the smell is gone (sell covered over) I think they were called "Crystal Air" they are dirt cheap also. Very good also after a night on the booze.

you should make sure you have a lot of fruit in your diet. do your gums bleed at all when you brush?

Have you been ill recently? cold, flu or cough?
A chest infection can give you really rotten breath, a very different smell to halitosis or bad breath from gum problems.

Hi, thanks for all the replies here again. I don't think it is stomach acid as I very rarely get heartburn. That’s interesting about milk though cause I used to drink loads of it the morning after a session and used feel rotten. Got it into my head that it was soothing on the stomach. I also learned the hard way that this wasn't so.

I had been suffering from a ridiculously hard to shake flu for about a month so maybe this is the root of it. Christ it's an awful thing when it's bad. Trying to keep a distance from people in the office, scaring away the missus, eating so many mints that the laxative effect kicks in...... not pleasant!

I'm back on the porridge again now and so far the coast is clear. Fingers crossed that once I start cramming in the proteins and gymming it again it stays fine. Going to head into boots over weekend and see about those tablet things in case this happens again. Keep them around for peace of mind. Will up the ante with the fruit too. Cheers fellers!

Given that you had the flu and from what you've said I'm guessing that the odour travels a lot further than just normal bad breath, it really does sound like you've got a chest infection of some sort. The bacteria in the lungs make the air you breath out smell really rancid, so its much more noticeable from a distance than just halitosis. Go to your doctor would be my advice.

Probably not directly relevant... but make sure you are flossing your teeth as well as brushing.
