I've been out of golf for a couple of years but getting back into it this year.

Anyone know what the handicap cut-off for the Lumsden Cup these days?

    Howdy Shriek,

I scraped in last year playing off 7.6 exact, as far as I know.
Don't quote me on that now but afaik it's generally up to 8 that gets in.

Having said that, it was a complete washout last year, reduced to 18 holes, everybody was soaked before they even hit a ball, not pleasant!!
So there may be a few who won't return, which might higher the handicap limit.
Must keep my eye on the GUI website for info on it. I'll post here if/when I find anything.

    JC

What's the Lumsden Cup lads? Sounds interesting.

It's a two-rounder down in Royal Dublin, annual event Graeme.
Gross and nett prizes, people come from all over to play in it, great event if you get the weather.
I thought I mentioned it to you last year.
It was my first year last year so still haven't experienced it in good weather, boo!
Think it's around August if I'm not mistaken.
If I remember correctly I couldn't get much info off GUI website, so you might be better off ringing them or Royal Dublin to get a date for applications opening.
    Think maybe June some time..??

Sounds good and from looking up the Royal Dublin website - the course looks brilliant.:)

I'll give them a ring later on and i'll post up what they tell me.

    Grand,

I'm 6.1ish. Will go up to 7 I'd say when I get invovlved again but hopefully will come back down by August and be safe.

Last years Entry form with details is on the GUI site under championships (Maybe under Leinster GUI Champs)

Didn't it conflict with the Lord Mayors cup last year? I remember someone commenting on it around the time.

They did a great job on the upgrade of Royaler. Was great to see the best of Europes amateurs suffer on it in gale force wind and rain in the Irish Amateur Open.

Just entered. e25 just to play the redesigned course is enough incentive.

Caddied there for in the Irish Amateur and can't say enough good things about the course. Hopefully the weather will be good this year.

Anyone know the date of the Lord Mayors this year, someone mentioned August 10th but they weren't quite sure.

    Yeah, August 10th.

Yeah I entered too but off 8.4 I may not get in. If I do any damage prior to the closing date I'll give them a buzz but we'll see.

f22, all courses look savage when you're caddying on them I find ;)

Do you just ring Clontarf to enter the Lord Mayor's yeah? Anyone know the date it opens and the ball-park h'cap cut-off?

    Timesheet opens Wed 23rd July

Last year it opened a bit before then so give them a call the week before just in case.

Handicap range is 5-9 i think. It's first come first served.

Sweet. Format is strokes then matchplay right?

18 holes strokeplay on the sunday. top 64 qualify. First round of matchplay takes place over the Monday and Tuesday afternoons/evenings (you can say which you prefer on the day although you're not guaranteed it). Matchplay continues every day until the final on the saturday, which i think is 36 holes (i didn't quite make it that far last year!).

Cut of last year was 78 (plus a few 79s). Winning gross score in the qualifying was 71.

For one reason or another I've actually never played in it. Great format and squashing it all into a week makes it a good buzz I'd say.

Last year was my first year. Rained all week and there were alot of delays, still great to be involved in though. Decent crowds out watching at times too, especially on the good nights and in the latter rounds.

Really good format and pretty unique for players of our level. Could require an understanding boss though depending how far you go.

Haha, my boss is off 5 and plays 3 times a week so he's pretty understanding ;)

That's cool that people come out to have a look. Would be nice to get to a later round and draw a home member.

Have played the place a bit over the years as I'm local, just not since the last bit of work has been done.

I agree, it's easy to enjoy a course when you're not the one trying to hit a 480 yard par 4 into a 30 mph wind in 2.

I've never played the course, is it really tough or does it really depend on the weather?

If i get in i'm just looking at it as a good experience and a chance to play a top course at a great price. I'll be happy to break 100!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,361 ✭✭✭f22

It's a really good course, tough but fair.

Can be a little tight on the outward nine (generally plays into the wind) and you are open to the elements. If it's calm (rarely) its a course that can really score on if you have your game with you.

Not sure which tees they will play off, because off the championship stakes it's a beast (7200 yards + if I am correct) and it's no short hop off the medal plates either.

Always in superb condition, so as you said if you play just for the experience you will walk off a happy camper.

Any great expectations can be severely dashed after the first 5 holes.

Lovely, just booked online there, hope to Jaysus we get the weather for it.
So far so bad this year..

Roll on the Lord Mayors too, maybe this year I'll qualify :o

Happy Days that your boss is forgiving. I nearly lost my job last year due to the Lord mayors!

Its a great comp though! I got to the semi's last year. I knocked out a local in the quarters. Theres was loads of people watching, 2 down with 3 to play and went birdie par birdie which was good enough for the match!!
Going to miss it this year due to holidays!!

Back to thread topic! Just entered the lumsden this morning, 25eur for two rounds in royaler is great value. Although im not too fond of linx golf, i fancy myself to get a prize!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

I got knocked out in the last 32 last year. Beat a member in the 1st round but lost to another in the 2nd. Wasn't too bad considering i'd never played the course before prior to the qualifying.

I'll play in the qualifying this year but really doubt i'll be able to play the matchplay due to work. Would love another crack at it though.

There are some members there who apparently take the week off to play it. You'd feel a bit of a tit if you didn't qualify or got koed early then though!

If you were sure that work commitments would prevent you from playing in the knockout stages, what would you do if during the qualifying round you were shooting a good score? The reason I ask is that it would be a shame to concede your 1st round match because you couldn't make it, therefore occupying a place in the draw that someone who was available to play (but missed out by a shot or BB9 etc.) could have filled?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭Paulusmaximus

I've played and won the Lumsden Cup previous. Great competition and a great cup to fill with porter! As someone says, 25 euro to play Royaler is fantastic value. Another thing i noticed recently is that their SS is 76! Just shows how tough the course has become after their changes. This year it is clashing with the Mullingar Scratch Cup so that will mean a lot of the really low guys won't be around.

as for the Lord Mayors, thats another great competition. Unfortunately, i'm too low for it. I did get to the quarters one year, but combined with getting up earlier and earlier to get to work and then to the golf course, come the Friday evening i was shattered and played terrible golf.

I'd just tell them on the day that i couldn't play the matchplay.

If its any help, the first round matches are played on monday or tuesday and you are usually able to pick your preferred day. If thats not any help, the best thing to do, is to have your good score and indicate on your card that you are unavailable for the matchplay stages. They will then discount you when selecting the 64 qualifiers and 65th would get in..

Even if i could play the Monday or Tuesday i'd be looking at the sack if i asked for early finishes all week. Would be far better to let someone else have a proper shot at it.

    Getting back to the Lumsden...

Didn't realise the Mullingar Scratch was on the same day. There's also a JSC at Knightsbrook that day too (Co Meath, Kilcock and Stackstown too).

    Busy times!

thats a potential dilemma for me too. Do i try and play the Mullingar Senior Scratch Cup or play in the Lumsden Cup. At the minute my exact wouldn't be low enough for Mullingar but that could possible change.....what would people's suggestions be!

With a diluted field, the Lumsden may be your best option.

The big boys will all be present this year in Mullingar so the opposition will be very tough. Wouldn't wish to doubt your credentials but you will be up against the cream of Irish amateurs, including a few internationals.

i wouldn't be expecting to win in mullingar or to get a prize even, but the chance to play with/against the int'ls is quite tempting, but royaler is local and only takes up one day of the weekend so may just keep to that.

Didn't hear anything back yet about the Lumsden. I entered off 8.1 so not sure if I got in.

Lord Mayor's timesheet is now open
I just rang up Clontarf and got on the sheet. I'm down at 12 o'clock.

cut off point at 5.1 would mean there is a lot of good golfers playing in it. Can't wait now. Hope i get a favourable draw!!
