    G'wan, a bit of fun...

Ok, say you’re stranded – you have enough food/water/shelter and you know you’ll be picked up in a couple of weeks, but you get to have a photography kit to keep you occupied. You get 3 items out of the following list, after the camera body itself:

    Wide angle lens (12-24mm)
Standard, fast lens (like the nifty fifty)
    100mm macro lens
    Tele-zoom, 100-400mm
    Tripod
    Flash
Laptop with photoshop and one ‘technique’ of your choice (convert to bw with dodge and burn, levels, saturation, high pass filter, etc)

Or, something else I haven’t mentioned that some smart arse is bound to suggest

I’d have to have the 12-24mm, the 100mm macro, and laptop with gradient map layer blended as soft light :)

    150mm macro
about 1TB in compact flash cards
    spare batteries

Laptops don't work for long on desert islands... Unless theyre the kind of desert islands with electricity. :p

    Wide Angle lens
    Elven
    Graduated ND filter

I am willing to substitute Elven with RCN Photos OR a Manfrotto tripod.

rules? rules you say? nothing on my list was in 'the list'. 'The list' is fundamentally flawed and so I chose to alter it. Fundamentally flawed I tells ya!

    Checkmate Mr Tramapoline!

    50mm
    100mm Macro
    Wide angle

If we are getting off the island in a short while then I can wait till then to process in PS

Is someone planning on going on a reality TV show and is hoping to bring their camera along?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

It's an imaginary desert island so it has electricity. And you definitely sound like a crazy man.

I'd go for the tripod instead of the elf Telepaul, cos I sure as hell can't hold a camera steady...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 609 ✭✭✭duffarama

    7-14mm UWA
    12-60mm SWD
    Fl-50R

2 weather sealed lenses and a flash should do the job ;)

Ooh, with the writers strike you think we could maybe do that?

Aside from the fact that I appear to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic, I take issue with the notion that any desert island has electricity.. be it imaginary or not!

Either way, I'm keeping my 150mm macro and because of the emotional distress caused by this exchange, I'm also adding my tripod to that list. I dont care if it's over the weight limit or not.

    Changed my mind.

    RCN Photos.
    Some Jagermeifster
    Playstation

is it a true desert island or more like a jungle-type island?

Somehow I dont think you;ve thought you're cunning plan thru......

A playstation without a tv (let alone games) is a paperweight!! an ugly paperweight at that

Oh dear. I knew this would end in tears.

On the other hand, I had been wondering how to spell Jagermeifster.

Think 'Lost', people. But without The Others. Or the plane crash. Or Sawyer & Kate...

i'd ask for a *big* inflatable camera, and two very long lenses, flattened at one end.

I've changed my mind again... can I leave the camera gear behind and introduce communism to the island? I could be the new Castro, just have to work on the beard.

You'll need to bring some minions then....... is 3 enough to qualify as dictatorship?

possibly... although 3000 would be better.. extra rations for referrals! Bring a friend

    Few weeks?

Fully manual film body, 50mm 1.4, wide angle and a bag of film. I'm lot letting my batteries run out. Or sand in my laptop/5D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

    a wide angle
    a macro
a 100-400 fast zoom with attached tripod cos otherwise it's useless.

Incidentally, coincidentally, I have been considering a trip to this place lately.

I like the idea of desert islands. And as for the electricity - I'm with rymus on this. I did a no-ESB trip to Morocco and had fantastic fun with the charging of batteries and laptops off a temperamental diesel generator...so do batteries count? Plus I want a sleeping bag. I did Morocco without a sleeping bag and it was a bad idea. How warm does it stay at night on this desert island? Do we have tents or do we have to sleep under banana leaves? And incidentally, are there any mosquitoes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

    Snorkel
    Lots of film
    Nikonos underwater cam

(You crazy landlubbers are all stuck on the hot dusty land while I get to swim with mermaids!) :D

All perfectly cromulent questions.. Also, humidity and average pollen count for this mysterious island. And long range weather forecast.

    Look at the bottle!!!

Anyways. I think we need some definitive info on this island. Size? Natural resources? Type and extent of vegetation? Topography? Ruined structures that may provide shelter?

Exactly WHAT were you doing circa 1939-1945?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

Does the imaginary island with imaginary esb have an imaginary bar? Perhaps some imaginary pool tables and cabana boys.. hey if someone's getting mermaids I'm getting cabana boys!

    100 macro
    Tripod
Laptop (I could never wait weeks!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭CraggyIslander

have your banana boys and mermans, I'm calling dibbs on the playboy mansion filled with playboy bunnies... :D (mansion without hugh heffner that is)

Assuming there's plenty of wildlife that isnt shy of humans I'd take a 100-400L class zoom and a very sturdy tripod and a PC with 23" screen for editing.

    TelePaul wrote: »

was an ant in pre-reincarnation mode. The goings ons of humans didn't concern me for more than the amount of time it took one to stand on me.

No one has mentioned suntan lotion yet. As Paudie said to me during People's Photography, every surf photographer should have a bottle of suncream handy. So I'll see you all drunk and sunburned while I....

have dibs on the surfer dudes who arrived in a nice yacht to rescue me 20 minutes ago.

Is there a policy on clothes? I kinda figure if the Island WAS deserted I'd go au natural.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭King Eric

Id bring a 5d (I don't have one yet but since Al is leaving his behind i'll have a quick stop on the way to the airport)

    24-70 2.8L
    leatherman
kate from lost (cos shes gorgeous and shes knows all the good spots on the island for photos and food and she'll find me a nice darma iniciative laptop)

Julie's going to be disgusted when she gets back in here and sees where her thread is gone.

doesn't sound like you're going to want to come back off the island then.

No one's mentioned mobile phones either. I suppose if you've ESB you've probably vodafone coverage which means roaming broadband. I may swap one of the lenses for a laptop.

Come, come Rymus! everyone knows kangaroos don't have testicles, it's the lesser known "Mangaroo" that is the male of the species, you don't see them very often because with testicles and all it's very hard to hop about. The ladies go to him! Giggity, giggity, giggity!

    ;)

    Sorry Julie!!!

On a more serious and OT note.

    Canon 30D
    100mm Macro
    circular polarising filter.

won't all the sand ruin the camera ?
camera tripod some clear plastic bags or housing .
    and all that lensy lark.

It's actually more about drinking all your water, then taking a leak in your empty water bottle and using it as a hot water bottle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Urine is also an anti-septic and anti-jellyfish sting liquid....Urine, what can't it do? (Applies to boys only though due to differences in anatomy, you know what I'm talking about girls!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus
