Quickest/easiest way to get rid of beer belly

    Hi

I'm pretty sure that's all it is - a beer belly. I'm just over 6 feet and 15.5 stone - so I reckon up to about a stone overweight maybe. The rest of my body is well proportioned e.g. my legs and arms are fairly toned, don't have double chin etc.

Problem is I have a busy schedule and don't have that much time for exercise. Diet wise I'm ok - fairly healthy. Have cut out the occasional chips/crisps and cut back on the beer but I need to get rid of this belly - are sit-ups still the best way to do this? if not, what? and how soon should I expect to see results?

    Thanks

Seriously the best way to get rid of a beer belly is to..give up beer!Sit-ups wont do anything whatever to reduce the fat on your stomach, thye'll tighten the muscles underneath but thats about it.If you're planning to excersise the gut away you should take up a mixed weight/cardio routine to get the best results. You will notice some fat loss early on but really it'll be six weeks or more before you notice a *big* difference.Stick with it.

Thanks Degsy - so any specific suggestions as to what exactly to do and for how long per day/week?

(I'm not joining a gym BTW and don't have weights)

Do more walking then.I dont no your circumstances but a lot of people walk home from work instead of taking the bus(obviously not if you live 20 miles away).Take the stairs in work instead of a lift, try to do a 20-30 minute fast walk in the evenings, its a painless way to get excersise. If you can jog or run so much the better. The point is you want to try and burn more calories than you're taking in,fat is the overspill of excess calories.

    OK - cheers.

It's obvious really when you put it like that :)

Was hoping you'd suggest walking - I'd considered it but didn't think it would be sufficient to get rid of the belly. Suppose I always saw walking as the 'bare minimum' type of exercise for retired people.

I live about 15 miles from my work so walking/cycling there is out.

I'll give the brisk evening walk thing a go then - about 30 mins round trip.

    Thanks

I'm in the same situation as Caveat carrying at least a stone to much more to do with food and sweet things than beer, i tried the walking thing but just could not do the brisk bit my mind would wonder and when i came back to myself found i was strolling again, want to be brisk just feel stupid doing the hole power walk thing.

Get a bike then or join a local swimming pool.

The easiest way to lose a beer belly is to burn more calories than you take in.

Can be achieved by diet alone or with the aid of exercise.

So what is your diet like?

If you're willing to walk for 30 mins why not just run for 30 mins instead (same amount of time but more effort so more calories burned)

I would really advise bodyweight exercises (would advise weights but you wont buy them or join a gym) as well, push ups, chin/pull ups, dips etc

There is no quick and easy way to lose a beer belly though, it requires dedication and hard work

I lost most of my gut by simply walking 30 minutes every evening at a decent pace. And also cut down slightly on my beer intake but not by a drastic amount.

Yep, cant recommend resistance training enough, which doesnt have to mean using wieghts, but they sure help. Staring out you can do body squats & pushups. Weights would help. At least get a chinning bar, only €11.

At your weight walking will burn a LOT of calories. With 5 miles extra a day you'll lose over a pound a week- if you walk very fast or jog half of it that'll take no time. Fix your diet and you'll lose 2lb/week, maybe more for the first few weeks.
    You'll burn about 125kcal/mile
    125kcal x 5miles x 7days=4375=1.25 lb fat/week

Walking with music is very addictive. I often run places as well when it's cold- it's such an under-rated mode of transport! Due to my compulsive walking, I lose weight very easily. If I don't watch what I eat for a few weeks, I'll lose half a stone, just like that.
I know you say you don't have time for exercise, but this is really the bare minimum to be healthy. You should get out in the air, get your blood pumping, think about stuff.

(I'm crap at resistance stuff myself but I'm working on that)

Steve Cram was 6 foot 1 and 10.5 stone. Maybe it's more than just a beer belly? Don't want to be discouraging, but i was 5'9" and 14 stone and felt I only needed to lose a few pounds, but by the time I got fit I was 11 stone. Main thing though is you've made the decision to start to get back in shape. Exercise, exercise, exercise, wouldn't worry too much about what type, whatever you enjoy. And don't overindulge with the food and drink.
    Best of luck.

Cut out beer, pasta, bread & general junkfood.

Do some exercise. If you get a bus to work, then hop off a few stops early and walk the last bit of the way. If you drive, then leave the car 2 miles away from the office and walk the last bit. The quickest way would be to do some weight training, whilst watching your diet.

    Thanks all.

I think the evening walks is the way to start - I'll maybe consider weights at a later date.

My diet is generally good - I've already cut out the occasional bags of crisps and chips and cut back on the beer (all of which were my only real problem areas diet wise).

I used to get a lot of exercise but my circumstances have changed in the last 5 or 6 years and due to now almost zero exercise (and I suppose advancing years - I'm 38) this belly has appeared.

I'm not interested in achieving an athletic fitness level - I've been 10.5 stone before and felt too thin - just get rid of the belly and tone up a little.

""Cut out beer, pasta, bread & general junkfood.""

Is there anything left to eat?

I sincerely hope that the poster has found something to eat in the last two years or he will be severely malnourished

Gav: Posting on zombie threads is I believe frowned upon on most if not all of the forums on boards.ie
