Ab work out belts

    Has anybody any expierence with those ab work out belts?
    I am considering one for a family member who wishes to loses weight, but is quite self conscience. They wouldn't be comfortable enough to go to a gym, even home equipment is out of bounds around people. The belt would be hopefully suitable as it would be discreet.

    Any thoughts, or reccommendation od a product?


    ps: I am aware that these are in no way optimal, but but I feel in the situation they may be the best option.

    Dont waste your money. All those things do is contract the muscles, you might get slightly firmer and stronger abs (and i mean slightly) but it will not effect the level of fat covering the abs.

    Your friends best bet is to change there diet, less calories = fat loss, have a read of the stickies for tonnes of info on the subject.

    Start of simple, work on getting the diet in check , introduce some exercise ... and the weight WILL come off. And you wont have been ripped off on some gimmick !

    agreed tell them not to waste their money.

    truthfully getting their diet in order and doing simple things like walking and body weight exercises would be alot better for them

    The models on the box got their abs doing heavy squats and proper ab work. This technology is intended for comatose patients to stop muscles wasting away, not for loosing fat. Also doing ab exercises will not result in spot stomach reduction. Also if they are quite fat all those belts are pretty much doing is electrocuting you.

    Get the person a set of weights to do at home and a book, though most techniques are all online, look at www.exrx.net

    What you want for your abs is a Fitness Ball...

    Here is probably the best abs workout ive experienced and proves great results. However not overnight, over months so you have got to stick with it. Many people give up excersise after a few weeks wehn they see they are not losing weight, you have to stick to it. Ok...

    Lie on your back with the fitness ball at your feet. Raise your legs and bring the fitness ball under then, so your calves and back of tighs form a right angle. Clench the ball tight in this position. Raise your back right up. Start from this position, move down slowly but not all the way, come up again but not all they way (if you get my drift), continue this movement and you will begin to feel it in your abs. Sorry for a crummy description, if anyone else can describe it better then please do. But hey youve saved yourself 50euro on a belt :)

    Just fyi, I did buy one. Bout 2 months ago I did an injury to my back and thought I'd give them a go as I couldn't ab exercises. Definitely not for the long term but I did notice it kept me slightly firmer than if I can done nothing at all, so was good when I got back to full fitness. Just an amateur's opinion...:o.. that while not for long term use could be good as a top up or a complement??

    They were originally designed for a similar reason to what you used it for... To stop muscular atrophy in a medical rehab situation.

    Thanks for the help guys. Wasn't aware that was the original design basis.
    I know diet is most important part, i've changed my diet a little bit over the last while, but rest of the family isn't budging. Sounds like ab belt is a no go.
