Plugs in changing rooms - NAC

    Hi,

NAC has taken out all plugs - not even one left in the changing rooms.

They said that unfortunately under health and safety regulations, they are required to PAT test all electrical appliances used in the building. Members who are using their own equipment that is not regulated or tested is against regulations and for this reason they have removed all accessible plugs.

Has anyone else come across this in other gyms?

    Thanks

I take it you mean sockets rather than plugs. I've never heard of it before, but those are the regulations and the NAC would need to operate far more in the "white economy" than most places.

You mean the economy that's just for white people? Clive, that's a shame... never thought that of you... shame.

Hmmm not so sure, it is an easy excuse to give. I am involved with PAT & other electrical testing of equipment myself, but not sure of the legal situation. I do know I can walk into my local library that provides a outlet for a laptop and it doesnt require PAT testing. I am sure people can think of many other places where they can still use sockets, college, hotels etc.

Seems some idiot might have got electrocuted using a hairdryer or something, and rather than just say "no more plugs", they do not want abuse so blame a law and can shrug their shoulders saying "crazy, but we have no say in the matter".

When I studied in the UK all personal appliances (as in laptops etc.) had to be PAT tested before you could use them in the college. This was enforced before you could get the network settings to use your laptop on the college network.

Yeah PAT testing is big in the UK. My company sells machines to the UK and we do have some problems, usually people using faulty PAT testers that fail good machines. Some contract installers might use them upon installation as a preventative action so there wont be a service callout a week later. Also I would expect big places like Intel or Microsoft might do all equipment, they have some crazy procedures in big places.

Thanks for all the feedback. Yes, it was a socket that I was looking for ;)
It wouldn't be so bad if the hair dryers were anyway decent. They must be 100Watt dryers.

due to the legal requirement for corporate pat testing they can refuse to provide ports for spurious devices.

I also think Pat testing is being introduced to sarbox testing, which is causing all kinds of havoc where i work.
