Ok with petrol prices on the up I decided to check what return I was getting on my present car fuel wise.

    For €50 petrol I get very close to 250 miles. I m driving a 2000 Celica 190 bhp tiptronic.

    So €10 = 50 miles

I dont drive long journeys mainly 5/6 miles at a time

I would be interested in hearing what other people are getting and how my car compares?

50euro gets me around 300 miles. 2.0 petrol 135bhp spacewagon. lots of short journeys 4-10 miles, a few long journeys a month of 150-200 miles.

    1999 Honda Integra Type R - 187bhp

    For €50 i get 250 miles, drive about 40 miles a day

Absolutely pointless comparison unless you include what price the petrol was. €50 in one garage could equate to acouple fo litres difference if the price is a good bit higher.

Last couple of times I payed 1.20 a litre which seems standard enough in Cork these days

    (€50 = 60litres)

Where the glaven are you buying your petrol?
I'd drive to Meath once a fortnight for 83 cent a litre petrol!

In fairness Statoil on Dublin's quays has closed so the national average price has plummeted to realistic levels

Can you actually get €50 worth into your car in one go?

I can't (Civic VTI), tank is 45 litre, and the closest I've gotten is 38 litres (€45), and that was with the red light on for ages.

EDIT: just read your next post: there is no way 60 litres will fit in an ITR.

Mine is a 70L tank so I can and do put in a lot more than €50 :(

The statoil branding is gone but the guy is still operating.

On tank sizes, my Safrane had an 80ltr tank. I used to get about 20 mpg.

whoops my calculations are way out there then, the tank holds €40 euro exactly from a pump where the price is 1.18 a litre, i get exactly 200miles out of this, so €50 is a tank and a quarter, which is actually only 250miles for the €50. which equates to 59 litres i think?

sorry i'm flued up and not with, thanks for pointing out my stupidity

    (actually i'm just dumb :))

no jhmeg i can only get €40 in at a time

570 miles from €49 at 116.9 per litre for diesel.

I got 435 miles from 81 litres (another close call with the light coming on:D) so I'm saying 100 miles per 20 litres to be safe.

I get 500miles of city driving in GT TDI Golf 1.9 Diesel. 1.19 per liter normal. If you want more for your money look at

You can drive to say on fuel and save a few euros. I tried this from Gorey to Dublin never going over 60 mile per hour & got 70MPG or use 4 liters for 100km. happy driving :)

I dunno how many miles per € but i've worked out the MPG before

    Audi = 38.9mpg (2.5 diesel)
    Renault 19 16v = 25ish
Lancia Integrale = 15mpg so not the daily driver!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,833 ✭✭✭✭Armin_Tamzarian

€10 petrol would usually give me 35-40 miles.

Last time I checked it was 1.95 a litre there.

I can't see that losing so much business is balanced by catching out the odd driver who does check the price regardless of who else fills up there (Guards) etc.

I wasn't aware that it was still going - which brand is it under now?
As for the gardai, they had a Statoil a/c so they won't be using it now.

Filled 'er up tonight, so the last tank, according to my calculations, got me 174 miles for €50.
Audi RS6, 4.2l, averaging 19mpg or thereabouts these days.

Last time i checked i got bout 550 miles from the tank which is 47 litres
its a '98 Seat Ibiza 1.9D with 157k miles on the clock.
Still a very healthy 50-55mpg on your average tank id estimate.

for 50 euros I can drive maybe 420 miles, car is Matiz 800cc

    mpg is around 35-39 (6.0l-6.7l/100km)

That doesn't seem that great for a small car like that TBH, I get the same in a 1.5l car, a lot more on a long cruise

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 249 ✭✭paulksnn

50 euro gets me about 9 gallons (41.35 litres) That's the tank almost full.
    450 Miles = 50 mpg.
    04 Mazda 6 2L Diesel

Just on the filling up thing, when I fill my tank, I FILL FILL it, like after the pump first cuts off because it's full, I can still put about 10 more litres in before it starts to nearly overflow. I hope I'm not supposed to just leave it when it first cuts off?

I agree, one reason is that I go flat out guite often, since the car is so painfully slow.

Nah, the cutoff mechanism is far from foolproof.

    ~350 miles for €50 (1.19 per litre)
    96 1.6 golf

never really appreciated how much further the diesels went. good thread.

    20 miles to the litre

    so, um...

    833 miles for 50e? (@ 1.20e / litre )

shame I can only fit 7.5l in my 125cc :p

I get about 500mls from 50ltrs in a Golf GT Tdi. A lot of motorway driving tho.

Once averaged 70mpg on the trip computer driving from Belfast to Dublin because I had the flu and stuck it at 60 the whole way.

Not 100% accurate there now but not far out either.

Most small diesels in that class will achieve similar with a little care. Given a 55 litre tank and an average consumption of 5 litres per 100 km you can see how easy it is to achieve it - even allowing for not running the tank dry. Its worth noting that most of them will run around the 4.2 L/100 km range quite easily but it all depends on the driving conditions and driver style.

From a 60 litre tank in my '97 1.8 Petrol V40 I get 400 miles mixed driving - That's about 30 MPG which is not terribly bad, as I carry a fair bit of kit in the boot most of the time, and have roof bars on it etc. On a long run without the roof bars, I'm up to about 37 MPG which isn't too bad.

The '81 Range Rover on the other hand, that's returning about 220 miles from an 80 litre tank, when I don't have a head on wind, if I'm lucky. That's not joking either. About 11 MPG. If I get a head on wind, and the route has a load of hills, I'm down to about 8 MPG. Needless to say, she doesn't get to stretch the legs very often at that rate, but for a 27 year old pulling a full ambulance body around on her backside, she'll still make 75MPH without breaking a sweat..... And the twin carb V8....Sure why wouldn't you pay to hear that purr. :D

    Passat 1.9 TDI

Tank is officially 62 ltrs but I've squeezed over 63 ltrs into it from near empty at times so either the car manual is wrong or some of my local garages need their diesel pumps re-calibrated pretty badly !

Anyway, full tank costing anywhere from €71-€74 nowadays will give me nigh on 700 miles esp. if there's any long'ish runs involved. Currently do approx. 50 miles per day.

On the OP, I fill up at €1.18 per litre, put no more then €40 so about 35ltrs and get about 180miles per tank outta my car. I drive an evo 6 2ltr turbo.

From the last fill in my 'SUV':

    €50 at €1.169 per Litre = 42.77L

    42.77L = 9.41 Imperial Gallons

    9.41 Gallons got me 592Kms (367.85 Miles)

    Therefore:
    39MPG or 13.6c per mile

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭MarkN

    70 quid gets me 250 miles/400 kms.

    63 litres, 120c a litre approx.
