    Hi MJW,

I'm looking for exactly the same info. Can you direct me to the the other post that was complicated? I know a small bit about computers so i might give it a try. If it works I can let you know how to do it in a non-complicated way(if possible) Hopefully I won't mess up the boyfriend's PS3 ha ha

Have you tried updating the PS3? I was just looking for info on the problem myself so I had a look on the offical ps3 website & there are loads of updates for it. I haven't updated it myself yet though but I'll let you know if the updates make any difference.

    cheers

    hi,

I found that post that you were talking about. In a nutshell (assuming you haven't messed with any ps3 settings)

I have vista so step by step probably won't help in case you have XP but its generally the same thing...
    • Find your internet connection (which is your 3g connection)
    • Right click to get the properties
    • Under the heading "sharing" tick the box which says "allow other users to connect through this computer's internet"
    • if you are asked to select a "home networking connection" use Local Area connection
    • leave everthing else as you found it
    • Connect your PC to ps3 by the ethernet cable (long black cable) that comes with playstation
    • On PS3 select "network settings" under the settings heading & press x
    • Select "internet connection settings" & press x
    • Select "yes" on the message about internet connection terminating & then press x
    • Select "wired connection"
    • Select "easy"
After this basically let everything set to automatic. Or just basically agree with all the settings that are there.I know it looks a bit daunting but the MAIN thing I found was just setting up a shared internet connection on your pc after that it was easy peasy.

If all else fails just get someone else to do it for you :)

thats ok doin an easy setup ya will connect to psn and ps store no problem but will have problems playin some games like cod4 or pro evo, ya have to set a static ip on the ps3 and then forward ports to it to work properly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

i think for xp the easiest way to do it is start>programs>acc>communications>network setup or wireless network setup

I've done this with an O2 modem and it works fine. Can play COD4 online and rarely have any lag issues.

Tried Pro Evo on it tho and it was hopeless.

I done everthing there and it said no ethernet cable connected. Have I done something wrong or is it just dodgy cable?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

This was dodgy as hell on the 360 when I set it up. It didn't work the first few times and then it started working randomly.

I specified a manual/fixed IP on the console and then turned it off and it worked after that but I don't know why. The IP address specified was 192.168.0.1.

I have wireless built into my pc but if your are using the ethernet cable you are using a "wired connection". I just found it easier that way

Hmmm interesting... Maybe there is something wrong with the cable? Have you wiggled them & made sure they are in ok? I would try and borrow a cable off someone and test it that way.

After I posted my thread I was up and running in just over an hr & I didn't really have to mess with any of the settings. Does your pc have wireless? Maybe you should try the wireless option if there is something wrong with the cable.

I really hope it works for you.

My 3g modem has been acting up the last few days but when it is connected properly i've no problems with the online games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

yea it does have wireless.if i connect to the internet on the laptop how do I set the laptop to send the signal to the playstation wirelessly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

set up internet a wireless network under programs>acc>comms>wireless network setup wizard and then when ur searchin for it on the ps3 give the ps3 a static ip

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

When i goto set up a wireless network it asks me to name it and then give it a wep key. Once I do that it says connect to and I click that and it takes me back to the network part. Is that it set up. How do I give ps3 a static Ip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

when ur setting up the connection on the ps3 under network go to wireless and select custom instead of easy and do most ot the options auto but when ya see ip give it an ip add in ur dhcp range, not sure bout that on 3g, but with eircom my routers ip is 192.168.1.254 and my ps3 is 192.168.1.20

when ya went to set it up did ya check the box that says auto assign wep and when ya click next it should give an option to set it up using a flash drive or do it manual, do it manual and then print off the settings

You need a crossover cable for this set up the ethernet cable is for pluging into routers not other PC's usually yellow in colour I think they are 5e or can be called patch cable its function is to allow ICS on xp to act as a router.
They are reasonable enough. It has the guide on Sony hamepage for PS3.

I got a cable today but dont know if it is a cross over cable. Cracking up doing this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭Flankerb

It has to be a ethernet crossover cable normal ethernet cable will not do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

Its like the ne you get with the playstation but it has both ends the same. The cable with the playstation has one end like the connection on a home phone. The cable I got has the other connection at both ends. Is this the right one?

    Have you tried Wi-Fi??

Just get the WEP/WPK key from your router settings, and put them in on the PS3... Mine worked first time and I'm not a big net head so know sh@g all about networking etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

I tried on wireless and the ps3 is not picking up the singal from laptop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

i dont think ya set up the wireless network properly from what ya wrote, when ya go to set it up select new one give it any name and auto assign wep then click next then select manual set up and next and click PRINT NETWORK SETTINGS and the settings will come up in notepad and just enter those settings into wireless setup in ps3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

Okay ill talk threw what im doing. Im using vista btw.Ihave right clicked on my 3g connection and went to sharing and ticked the box for "allow other users to connect to network threw this internet connecton" and picked local area network from the drop dow box.

I goto start and then connect to.This brings up the network connection box and from there i choose open network and sharing centre.Next I click set up a connection or network. Here I can choose to:

    1 Connect to internet

2 Set up a wireless router or access point

3 Manually connect to a wireless network

4 Set up a wireless ad-hoc (computer to computer network)

5 Set up a dial up connection

    6 Connect to a workplace

I have tried two of these. Which ones should I use.
When I choose number 2 it comes up "detecting network hardware and settings". dont have a router so this is obviously the wrong one.

Then I tried number 4, it comes up and tells me what t is and I click next.
I am then told to give my network a name "michael" and I choose security type "wep" and I type in a security key "password". I tick the box for save this network and click next. It the tells me "this network is ready to use and will stay active untill everyone disconnects". All I can do here is close.

If I go back to network connections now I see my network. I right click and goto properties and all it shows is

    Name of network
    SSID
    Network Type
    Network availablity
    Security Type

Thats all it tells me. How do I print out the settings for my network or am I completly wrong? Sorry for such a long post but really want to get this working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

ya should go with 2 cos ya want an access point and ur 3g card is the hardware, just let it run through and i'm nearly certain ad hoc will only work for the psp

    Alright M.J.W,

I was able to set this up with by connecting my laptop to my ps3 using the ethernet cable i got with the PS3.

In the window where you right clicked on the 3g connection click on help and search for Internet connection sharing. It will bring up a step by step guide.

You've already ticked the box for internet connection setting. But then when i was doing this i also had to make sure the protocol settings were set to automaticaly optain an ip address.

The help from windows will show you how to do this as well under the search for Internet Connection Sharing.

When this is done connect your laptop to your PS3 and connect to the internet. On your PS3 go to settings.
Set up a wired connection and pick the easy setting.
I have everything set as automatic except for the proxy settings which i have set to "do not find" i think thats what it says I know its something like that.

Just test your connection and that should be it.
Let me know how you get on trying it this way i could help you out over email later if your still having trouble.

If you are connecting your PS3 directly to your computer a standard network cable will not work, you need a cross-over Ethernet cable.

Any decent computer shop should be able to sell you one.

    Later,
