I have a heavy bag in my attic and was wondering if anyone has any advice as to how best to use it in conjunction with a weights programme to lose weight and put on a bit of muscle?

I have a bit of experience with kickboxing so it's not the how of using the bag, more suggestions of sets, target heart rates and that sort of thing I'm unsure of.

Any/all advice or comments would be welcome.

Forget your target heart rates for a start. And what sets to do. The more and the harder you kick and punch the crap out of it, the more fat you will lose.

I would go for short, intensive bursts of punching and kicking, as long as you've got good technique. Combine that with lifting heavy weights and you'll be laughin'.

I would second that, when I was training(boxing) 3-4 times a week and lifting heavy twice a week the weight just fell off. The diet is also important aswell although I aint to clued up on diet as much as other guys here.......if it was bad i.e fast food I just wouldnt eat it.

Do rounds (2 or 3 minutes with a break after). They're anaerobic but give you a definite time period instead of flaffing around. I've flaffed around with my bag a good few times at home, but now I'll only do rounds.

I'll say to myself "right, 5 x 3 minute rounds with a 30 second break at the end of each one".

Works for me. Hope it helps.

Yeah I'm the same - you don't get much done if you don't have any plan. For a bit of cardio intensity you can throw in a few things like keeping the bag at a 30deg angle away from you by repeated fast punching for a minute. Just if it's all feeling a bit easy for you?
