I took up swimming last year and it has done wonders for my general fitness. However to shift some of that last bit of weight I am going to start doing some cycling and jogging. With swimming I find it very easy on the joints, muscles etc. I don't want to give myself any needless injuries so I was looking for some tips on stretching/warming up before jogging.

I don't do any stretching before running and much of my running would be at a high intensity or even sprinting. I use active warmups or dynamic warmups. There are many examples of these if you google it. I do stretching after sessions. Examples of active warmups would be build ups (very gentle shuttle runs increasing in intensity), prisoner squats, lunges etc.

The purpose of a warmup is to warm you up, not improve your flexibility.

There is increasing evidence that stretching before exercising doesn't reduce injury risk. In fact it's fairly definite that a long stretching session before weightlifting will reduce your immediate strength. A light warm up is probably a better bet.

But certainly stretching after you've finished your exercise session is very important. It allows you to retain and increase your mobility very well .
