    Hi all,

Heading back to UCC after a few years and need to find somewhere to live. There wasn't much choice last time I was in UCC, you picked from a few student villages and that was it. Been looking on Daft but not much around at the moment, just wondering what advise anyone might have about the best place to start looking. I've outgrown student villages and all that, just looking for somewhere nice within walking distance (see as parking in UCC aint gonna happen). Anyway, like I said, have tried Daft but not sure where else to look :/

    Cheers

you know you could get a house near dennehys cross or up near turners cross, since ucc have park and ride all day.....from 7isham to 7 at night.

also there is plenty of free parking on lee road which is 10mins walk from ucc,or 2 mins from ucc maradyke sports centre.

as for houses, your not likely to find much accomadation about the place atm around ucc, best bet is to get somewhere in a nearby suburb, you'd pay less per week, nd you could drive .get parknd ride/cycle into ucc...

    Id be the complete opposite

Yes there is park and ride, but it is always full, you have to be there early (although there is talk of a new one)

If you ask the Accomodation office they will give you a list of houses all within walking distance of UCC, although you may have to be prepared to share (but there are certainly small houses around for 2/3 people). I've been in some dodgy enough houses so i'd advise you to inspect the place before you agree to anything

If there is a free parking street around I can also imagine that being very busy, anyone from Cork I know in college is always giving out about how hard it is to find parking and how much they spend on it, so I'd imagine if there was a street around with free parking all of them would just park there

If you lived in a nearby suburb you would have problems with traffic every morning and evening

Hey guys didnt see the need for a new thread, was wondering about accomodation next year

thinking about 2 places, victoria lodge and brookfields
does anyway have any experience with one of these?

Also which is more expensive because I can't find a price for brookfields

Ive heard brookfields is right beside the university but victoria lodge is a 10mins walk (would that be annoying).

were would be the best place for a 1st year like?

    thanks in advance

Any idea how early is early?

Tbh though, I presume these houses are going to be real student gafs, and Im kinda past that stage. Im looking for somewhere nice, "proper house" if you know what I mean. Not that there is anything wrong with student gafs, just a been there done that situation.

I knew it was going to be a nightmare but hadn't thought it would be as bad as you are suggesting CantGetNoSleep, now im really anxious :/

just after 8:15 for Dennehy's Cross, before half eight for Pouladuff is what I'm told.
You can walk to UCC easily from Dennehy's Cross, you'll need to take the (free, every 20 mins) bus from Pouladuff.

On the off-chance you've got a permanent job in UCC you can get a swipe key for the car parks. Otherwise it's a 3 year wait for part time staff, never at all for students.

oh - and welcome (back) to UCC.

Thanks for the info, and the welcome deRanged! Doubt will be getting any swipe key unfortunately!

Dennehy's Cross area would be ideal, if only I could find somewhere, hourly refresh on Daft at the moment!

Gotta head up tomorrow to register, dreading finding somewhere to abandon the car even now! :(

there are two accessible pay car parks - the old student car park on Perrot avenue, and the old staff car park at Perrot inch (down by Gaol cross) - you *should* be able to ditch the car there for a couple of hours. The first couple of hours are only a euro an hour.

    Thanks deRanged, appreciate that.

I'd still say to try the accomodation office, they may have other types of houses

And I don't bring my car to Cork, it's just how much I hear my class mates talking about parking - being within walking distance would be much handier

Victoria Lodge is nicer inside, and a bit more expensive, it is about 15+ minutes walk from UCC Main Campus

Brookfield isn't the nicest inside, but not bad either, it is right beside the health sciences building (nursing, dentistry, medicine, ot etc.) and about 5/10 minutes from main campus

I feel Brookfield is better for meeting people, especially in first year, and a nicer setting, but the security can be pr*cks to first years

If I were you I'd choose an 8 bedroom townhouse in Brookfield, great for making loads of new friends

Thanks very much for the reply, It seems i;ve a tough choice to make, im hearing two different stories one person saying victoria is the best crack for 1st years and you saying brookfields is better. So im guessing which ever I choose im gonna have a great time

Ive heard from other people aswell that Victoria Lodge is very nice inside so basically what I have to ask would it really make a difference having to walk 10-15mins to the main campus?

the answer is in the question isn't it?
it's really not much of a distance.

I'd still pick Brookfield for first year, I just found it easier to meet more people there than Vic Lodge, you won't mind it being not quite as nice if you're having a craic

If you're just looking for somewhere nice, Farranlea Hall or Victoria Mills would be nicer than Victoria Lodge i'd say, all three are fairly nice inside though

From what I've heard, Brookfield is a lot of fun if you're a first year and like socialising etc.

OP why not place a wanted add in the Pink Pages section of the Evening Echo, adds are free and you never know.
If you were willing to do a 20/30 min walk, Clashduv - Riverview etc all have houses rented out, mostly to CUH students and staff - you might find someone looking to share.

    Good luck

Ah you'd have to be acting like a right **** to get them mad you. Generally they're okay. But I would reccomend Brookfield. It's great here :D

Yeah or living in a house near their little barracks up there, maybe they just had a general dislike of me (being a foulmouthed little f*cker many people do)

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone with something nice to say about Brookfield.

    I'd recommend Victoria Lodge.

I have received an email of confirmation from the ucc accommodation department. It says on the internet that i have to pay the deposit via the online payment system but i cannot find a link for it anywhere! Can anyone tell me what the next step is? I've tried contacting victoria lodge but i couldnt get through to anyone.

Don't forget theres plenty of houses up the model farm road. i'm up it about 3 miles but then i drive in. the only thing that wrecks my head about Cork is the parking. if your coming to Uni down here, leave the car at home and dig out the bike!! or else it €1.80 every two hours parking on the street.

If that's the Dean's Hall just off Washington St there apparently they're really strict about having people over, parties, etc. I know someone living there and she isn't too keen on that aspect of it anyway. It's nice enough inside though and so close to town.

Vic Lodge is nice, stayed there last year.Seems to be perfect for first years imo, plus an ensuite is always a bonus!

If you want to feel absolutely secure i suppose you can go for the likes of deanshall and those. i know 4 or 5 people who stayed in deanshall in their 1st year and they had good experiences. pleasent inside for a student place (better than UCD i can assure you!) good facilities... but in my opinion, student accomodation villages aren't really neccessary.

When i lived in Cork, I really landed on my feet. I lived out by the lough, in a lovely big house, with 5 other people, 2 of my closest friends and 3 others. rent was so reasonable.
the house was wasted on students, lovely, beautiful garden, and on a lough of course.. we really had some year, best summer of my life.

You can find these places.. get out and about and meet people in cork, and talk accomodation. Having friends in cork gets you everywhere with regard to most things you could need. Keep checking daft, and keep a listen out. i reccomend moving to the city hmm.. maybe even a month before you need to, to sort all this out, and if you're starting in sep 08', be all over it on the net this summer.
anyway... i love cork, you may have noticed! and even though i have to stay here for now (course i want to do now, i have to do in dublin) i will probably do a phd there, and i wish everyone studying there this year and next year all the very best! you'll love it..

A friend of mine lives in Farranlea Hall and she really likes it. It's nice and modern inside, and ensuite as far as I know. It wouldn't be for me though, it's quite far out from the city centre. Also I think it's about a twenty minute walk from UCC.

Can somebody please expand on Deanshall? I'm pretty sure I'm going there next year. I've seen a few people say its really hard to get people over, does that mean you can't bring people over at all? I'll want to bring my girlfriend over so would there be any trouble in this? As in her being allowed to stay the night or whatever. Answer please! :D
