Second part of your question was problems with westside:

Only why did,nt we all use it earlier !!!!! , Louie Simmons is the top of his field , and breaks down and simplfies powerlifting.

Check out Dave Tate as well

Westside hardly simplifies powerlifting... If you don't know what you're doing or don't have someone experienced to turn to then you'll just end up spinning your wheels.

I think he breaks down the individual areas, and promotes exercises that can push your PBs up.

I definitely would not recomend new powerlifters to train with Chains / Bands without TP for spotting, and to rein in the natural instinct to go too far , too soon ...

Just a quick one. I reckon any programme that calls for concerted effort is going to have a good effect, so I don't see what's so special about it.

Hmmm, not very clear there. I mean if you put a skinny man lifting heavy 3 days a week and eating to compensate, I think you'll see results no matter what the programme. For me it's too complex whereas http://www.startingstrength.net/workouts/ is about as simple as it gets and involves everything you need without complicating matters.

    Thoughts?

The Westside for skinny bastards program was just developed to make "skinny guys big"....thats pretty easy to do with any new trainee.

It was designed to make guys big and FAST.....the one certainty about DeFranco is whatever else he will do for you he will make you fast, and make you balanced.

For me, for a beginner, Starting Strength program as linked to by Roper will be a much better option. IMO.

The westside for skinny bastards works on a couple of areas at once and is intended as an off season program, So you have two days working on maximum strength, one day working on endurance and the last on acceleration. Also all the movment planes are balanced. Perfect template for an athelte

So, so true. A concept beautiful in its simplicity, yet ignored by too many.

Gawd I'm full of sh!te today.

Oh it works, don't get me wrong! People just end up making an ar$e of it cos there's so much information out there about it. And since it's a constantly evolving system, things Louie might have said 2-3 years ago no longer apply, so it looks like there's a lot of contradictory information.

At it's heart, westside is just a heavy day where you strain against weight and follow it up with one or two lifts to build the core lift (supplementary) and accessory work to get yoked. And a fast day where you move moderate weight with max force and follow that by supplementary and accessory work too.

People try to make it too complicated, since complicated is always better apparently and instead of just working hard they try to do all these fancy lifts and play about with bands and chains and just get no where.

I think alot of what is said with Westside makes sense, and I use alot of their principals in my own training, but as a final solution I don't think it's all that it's cracked up to be. I know too many strong ass lifters personally who don't train that way and are still the strongest guys in Ireland, and alot of the top level and world beating european lifters don't train at all like it either.

Hmm, perhaps. But if we're just talking about putting meat on bones like (I think) the OP is I'd take a simpler approach.

Completely agree if its literally putting meat on there's alot better and faster ways to do it. I'd only reccomend wsfsb to athletes.

edit: for a quick example to my point try doing box splits with out it hurting

Not wishing to drag up a dead thread, but I'd just like to add my Recommendation for this programme. I was pointed in its direction by AmazingEmmet on this forum and I made more progress in the six weeks I used this system than in six months working "off the cuff" by myself previously.

As Emmet says, it's perfect for athletes (I did it with GAA in mind) as it works everywhere in proportion. It's not trying to make you a champion powerlifter or champion sprinter - it's improving you everywhere together.

I've made huge improvements in Bench, Squats and Deads since I started it and, being honest, I now look alot better naked!

Best of luck with it, let us know what you think. I wish I'd taken bicep, forearm, leg measurements etc before and after because I'm sure there was significant gains...
