Gyms are boring and I'm so weak there must be exercises I can do at home. What do you think are the best? Sit ups? Push ups?

Depends on your goals, pushups, squats and lunges are great. There are a million core exercises you can do on a bench or hanging from a bar or holding yourself up, etc., that are all good depending on what you're looking for.

Honestly just to improve general strength, maybe gain a few kg and not have to throw my entire body into doors to open them. I seriously lack muscle and at 49kg am not thin, which means I must be about 35% fat or something...

http://www.simplefit.org/ and www.crossfit.ie will have plenty of info on body weight exercise but also consider getting http://irish-lifting.com/product_info_equipment.php?cPath=1_15&products_id=260. As will vastly increase the amount of exercise you can do.

Well, if you're bored by the gym, how do you know you'll be any less bored at home? :D

Push ups, squats, sit ups and raises will give you a great base from which to work. What you will need is someone to show you how to do these properly, otherwise you won't see results and may do yourself harm.

    Excellent strength building routine here

If you find gyms boring you might find working out at home boring too.

One of the things that sets us apart from other gyms is the community feel which adds to your motivation and makes you work harder. Pretty much everyone who comes to CrossFit had some experience like yours in a gym. Given an easy to adminster program that doesn't yield results and then quitting. Within a few week's of CF, they're more motivated, and are seeing/feeling results.

Colm, do you know of any crossfit or crossfit meets around London? Just curious.

    http://www.stemlerfit.com/

Andrew runs seminars and courses, I don't think he's a group timetable or a fixed location but he's the London affiliate.

edit: colm got in there before me. That is the second time that has happened to me. I think I am going to have to take up posting drills to improve my posting times

Cheers Colm & jsb. I should have specified in my post that I have found crossfit around London before by googling. My point was to seek insight that someone like Colm could provide on whether they are any good over here / much the same, any interesting points to note, etc.

I need some post clarification drills ;)

If you don't want to go to a gym but want to get into decent shape and increase your strength, then consider Fitness 4x4 training. It's a really good system.

    Ok thanks!
I know how to do all those things properly, except for chin ups but they're a bit beyond me anyway. It's just til I'm back in college with the gym there, because I really am not bothered commuting.

Yeah, it's a good idea to do the gym anyway as once your there, it's easy to stay focused.
I spent over a year trying to work from home with a barbell etc but it was too hard to be motivated there.

In the gym, there's no distractions so I've made far more gains in a few months in the gym than all that time at home.
