What do you need for check in with Ryanair

My mate booked around 12 seats for Rome when Ryanair were offering free flights for tommorow. But not everyone is going and the guy who booked them in the first place is meeting us their and can't get access to a computer so I was wondering do you really need that e-mail or is the passport enough. I seem to remember it being grand in most situations and is their anyway to get it sorted before the flight if it's not enough
