Hello I am a 19 year old guy,
    5 foot eleven
    and 11 stone
I am I guess you could say a bit scrawny yet I do have a small beer belly, that is too say I am not in shape.
I dont know if I should eat less to lose weight around my stomach,
or eat more and do more excercise/weight lifting

I want to look like this.

    any ideas?

    Lower you BF%...

And a Mach 3 would help as well!

To paraphrase that legend Mark Rippetoe, the best way to look like a healthy, athletic individual is to be a healthy athletic individual.

Get on a decent exercise program or work purely on strength, and learn how to eat right.

    Any further questions, please ask,
    Colm

Can I ask you to expand on this if you don't mind.

I mean yes the fact that he has shaved his chest is a bit rediculous

    but

considering I am naturally quiet small and scrawny, I dont think I could ever become meaty or tough looking

    so given that

would it not be better if I had some muscle definition then just plain out of shape?

That guy has no muscle to define, he is just skinny. If you want to look like that just stop eating.

Just coz you are scrawny doesnt mean you can't put on muscle, you just have to eat right and lift heavy.

How did u happen to come across that photo OP :P ?

    Indeed, he's quite scrawny

Im actually the same as u, im 19, 5 11 and 11 stone

Im back to the gym and eatin healthier than ever and noticin great results

I do a mixed programme of weights and cardio, and ive started going to classes like the Spin class, i get bored easily!

So as its been said, eat better and exercise and you'll look/feel much better

    but also give it time

Fair point. But what about if you want to look like the guy pictured ;)

OP, you're probably gonna catch some flak for this thread. It's not what is generally seen as "desirable" for the majority of posters here. If that's what you want to look like then don't let us discourage you. Basically he's just so skinny that you can see the underlying muscle that you probably already have.

as others have said, he's just plain skinny. no muscle definition really... his body fat is just so low you can see his hip bones! seriously, i probably have bigger arms than that guy.

you'd be surprised what kind of muscle you could put on, but only if you are prepared to put the proper workout and eating routine into practice. it would be hard, but not impossible, and faaaarrrrr preferable to looking like that.

i dont even like 'meaty' guys, but thats just nasty...

Mate, if you're naturally small and scrawny, just take up a decent program.

As above, it would be hard, but enjoyable, because when you're that small, results come quickly. I'm just using myself as an example, I'm 21, originally 10st now I'm 11st, and without too much work I got myself a bit of meat on the bones!

The main thing is to enjoy the benifits of hard work, good luck now!

    OP,

I think I see where you are coming from, but as alluded to by other posters, that guy isn't in the great shape you think he is, but has a very low BF.

Far from holding myself up as something to aspire to, I fooled myself for years by telling myself that I couldn't put on weight, that it was genetics playing against me etc. Over the past 18 months or so, I have tried to disprove this- sure, I'm never gonna be 'meaty', and genetics play their part, but by eating more (unfortunately, not always better, but defnitiely more), lifting weights 3-4 times per week and by drastically cutting my cardio, I have started to see some results.

I have put on about 14lbs (about 155lbs now- a few inches shorter than you, but was definitely scrawny before), and have maintained by BF below 10%. I want to add about another 7-10 lbs, and maintain at that level.

Sorry for the long spiel, but as far as I have found, you can achieve realistic goals like adding a stone, with hard work and a wee bit of dedication, so just be sure not to sell yourself short...
