This should possibly go into Bargain Alerts but I'm unsure.

Browns shop on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise have 6 bales for €20. This is the best price I have noticed for Briquettes this winter. Can anyone beat this?

PS I have no affiliation other than as a satisfied customer.

My In-Laws buy them from the factory just outside Cloghan in Offaly (Think its in Banagher??) They buy them by the trailer load for €2 per bale and would bring about 50 bales at a time. Its very keen I think.

Do you know how far they deliver or is it just locally?

€20 for 6 bales in Gings in Portlaoise.

    (= €3.33 per bale)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭dh0661

The equivalent of €3-50 in Tralee
The equivalent of €3-33 in Portlaoise
    And €5-00 in Dublin

This post should be moved to rip off Ireland.

Maybe but try renting a shop in Dublin and then shifting turf from the midlands and you mightn't make a whole lot. In fairness you can get them for €4.50 if you look around the city

My business neighbour was selling hardwood square briquettes. Two types he was selling. They were 3.90 euro/bale in dublin. He sells by the ton also. Dont know about delivery, he has a truck but I dunno what he does with that. I collected my briquettes from him. Think he might be out of briquettes at the moment.
One type were 75mm*75mm square cross section and 300mm long. 6 in a pack. Pack weight was 10kg. Hardwood.
The other type he had were rectangle blocks similar to bnm ones only twice as thick and 12 in a bale/pack.
He is a turf contractor among other things. He told me he has his own machines and bog to cut turf for sale every year. Dark/black turf he said.
He sells loose trailer loads and bagged turf also. Mainly sells turf in the midlands and briquettes in dublin but he would probably sell turf in dublin too.

    Hi All.

I just bought a palett of 90 bales from a company here in Mayo called Atlantic Fuels and Agri. I found them on a site called Done Deal. They would have worked out around €2.79 per bale each. (Best value in Ireland i found) http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/heating/1167486 have a look at yourself.

Can anyone just buy off them?. I would take 3 - 4 pallets at that price.

They suppose to be the best wood briquettes in Ireland.
Have to buy a pack to try.:)

I tried them last year. Nowhere as good as board na mona. I think they bring them from eastern europe somewhere.

Lovelace, there is a crowd down in Wexford making these:
    http://www.greenflame.ie/

They are Miscanthus/Elephant Grass logs and I tried them out. They are easy to handle and they have good heat, but my only criticism is about the ash. It's very bulky and whispy. You would fill a ash-box in a day where it might take three days to fill it with wood logs.
They are manufactured from Irish miscanthus and this is a crop chosen to replace all of the sugar-beet which was lost when Irish Sugar closed it's doors. For this reason I want to buy from them, but the ash is a concern for me.

Here's a breakdown of the cost of various briquettes:

    Miscanthus Briquettes (www.greenflame.ie), 17.76 MJ/kg, €0.36 per kg.
    Wood-logs (www.loggettes.com), 20.3 MJ/kg, €0.44 per Kg.
    Wood Briquettes (www.ecopellets.ie), 20.3 MJ/kg, €0.33 per kg.

Will you be using a stove or an open-fire? If you get a sample bag of these logs, will you post up your findings?

    Hi,
I tried the Greenflame ones. They expand too much, burn quickly and dont give much heat. I know about the ash, thats not a problem.
The best one last year were maxitherm ones. Big round briquettes, 5 in 10kg pack, great heat and they lasted for about 2 hours each in a stove. But we cant find them this year.
The loggettes ones look similar. I think its 2.5kg each log.
Will buy a pack and let you know how they burn.:)

Is the ash jamming in the fire-plate like the Miscanthus Briquettes?
If not I'll consider placing an order.

    Hey 10-10-20
Will let you know about the ash tomorrow, when i empty it. Either way 3 hours from one log is very impressive. Only need 2 logs for a night, thats very economical.

    Hey 10-10-20
Im still enjoying the loggettes. The ash was not as much as miscantuns briquettes but still more then firewood.
But we've never had as much heat from the stove. So i think its worth it.

Hey, you don't happen to know the name of that factory do you? I know there is a factory on the way from birr to ferbane. thats not it is it? that surrounded by bog so can only assume its a BMN factory.

    Hi Paddy,
Can i just check 2 two things, you got yours from.. "3 euro a bale of briquetts in Grange Builders Providers in Baldoyle,Dublin 13."?
The second question is the picture. I noticed your briquetts are wrapped individually in plastic (this would help me alot as I'll have to store some indoors), is this the way you got them? The reason being I called them and the girl said they were not wrapped in plastic.
    Thanks for the info!
    Mike

No I did not get them from Grange Builders Providers.

Grange are charging 3 euro a bale at the moment.Thats good, but not good enough for me.

And yes,the 2 pallets of briquettes that I got in are pre wrapped and strapped bales too,so you dont get dirty when handling/moving them.

A friend of mine who in the logistics/freight business tipped me off to them.

They were sourced for a local diy store, but he went bust last week.

I got offerd 2 pallets and the last 3 pallets were sold yesterday evening.

    Basicly,I got lucky.:)

Ah cheap briquettes. I bought a pallet of them last year. They come from Poland or Lithuania. Its great they come wrapped in plastic. Have you tried burning any yet? I wasn't impressed when I burned mine. they don't last very long and I concluded that i was far better off just buying ordinary BNM briquettes which would burn far longer and support irish Jobs.

Estonia to be precise, black turf briquettes and they burn very well in my stove.

Canada and Estonia have massive bog lands and turf reserves too.

My house is very well insulated too, (A3 BER) so the house holds the heat very very well too.
