So is it a gimmick or are you all spending hours playing it after the initial love affair? looking for peoples balanced opinions who own it, dont wana buy a second console and have it just sitting therein a months time.

I have a ps3 myself but the delay on decent games (any ones currently out were very short) and the lack of anything decent on television lately is making me consider purchasing a Wii. I know once GTA and MGS come out i will be 100% dedicated to them so in the meantime the reasons enticing me to fork out the few hundred for a wii:

    a) mario galaxy - seems to be getting great reviews everywhere and looks quite good. (even mario on the ds passed a few hours for me over the xmas) is it gona keep me coming back to completion?

    b) family playing option - herself would never sit down and play a ps3 game with me, guess she looks at it as her nemesis. however she would play wii sports or olympics in theory so i see that as a good thing. our son might be able to have a go at it too. do these games loose their appeal v quickly?

anything else people feel relevant, id be grateful. (inc which stores are doing the best offers)

I hadn't touched mine at all for months and then I got mario galaxy. Been playing that for weeks now. I only have 59 stars so far so there is still a lot left to play. And because of the way it's designed, you can play for 20 mins or keep playing for hours. It's been pretty much that and a few pc games for about a month now. The 360 and Ps3 haven't been used at
all although I want to get back to cod4 multiplayer and have uncharted and rachet on the ps3.

Hadn't touched it in a while after the initial few months. Then I got Galaxy and Guitar Hero and I play it for a few hours daily.

There are a good few really good games out for it now and there are also a few AAA titles on the horizon like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

I play mine at least 4 times a week, Mario & Sonic olympics FTW

The Wii is much more gf friendly than a PS3. IMO, good games to get would be:

Mario Party 8 (for all the family)
    Koroninpa (very addictive)
    Mario Galaxy (one player)
Legend of Zelda (for your good self)
Wii play (for the kids - game comes with Wii controller)

Still go back to it often. Another addictive game is the sports game that comes with it. The training mini-games are fantastic especially the bowling. Tiger Woods 08 is also good.

Indeed, I have been playing Super Mario 3 (not to sure if thats the name of it!) from the VC alot. There are a few games due to be released in the near future which hopefully will be a good addition. It does get a bit boring every so often, but what console doesnt.

Is that better than '07. I played '07 a couple of days ago and I wasnt impressed:(

i was playing tiger woods 07 as well and thought it was poor. then i discovered the Tiger Challenge game (i had gone straight into a PGA tour) and the game is much better. i love the one ball game.

thanks for all the replies - will go ahead and get it so. mario should def keep me going til the ps3 game releases

I've only turned mine on once since Marchand that was to use the web browser when my PC acted up.

Played Mario Party 8 in my cousins once too.

Their was a brief period in the summer when I didnt play it. From time I got it in Jan to the time in Summer I palyed it at least 4 times a week. At the moment im playing about 4 hours a day. Great piece of machinery. You should consider buying it for sure.

my biggest problem will be getting my hands on one by the looks of things. rang around and none locally. might take a spin to waterford later. there isnt a major rush but it wouldve been nice to pick one up straight away. worst case it means waiting a few weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

have to say that I use mine quite a bit. Metroid Prime 3 corruption is a fantastic game and really showcases how great the wii controls are for FPS. Hopefully we see some more of the same this year. Guitar hero 3 is keeping me busy too but I guess that doesn't really count as you have a ps3 and it's available (with downloadable content) on that. Someone else mentioned Kororopina - great game, really gets difficult towards the later levels and it'll def pass that time. Other games I'm playing on it are Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles (light gun game), ssx blur, tomb raider anniversary and lego star wars complete saga.

That's not even mentioning wii fit, which I got at christmas and it's definatley one to pick up when it comes out over here.

Yeah my Wii was idle for most of the summer but its getting some good use now. It really comes into its own when you've got multiple players though. Wii sports is a real crowd pleaser, especially if you've got a second remote and nunchuk for the boxing.

I'm playing resident evil umbrella chronicles with the wii zapper at the moment and its good stuff. I'm stuck on one of the boss fights at the moment though.

Mario Galaxy, as mentioned above, is excellent.

I have Tiger Woods 08 as well (it was bundled with the wii at the time I bought it), and it is pretty boring in PGA tour mode. I find Wii sports golf to be more fun and a far superior implementation of the wiimote controls. Pity it only has 9 holes! When I take a swing in tiger it seems to totally mis-read my swing about 1 in 5 times, which can totally fcuk up your game. Plus the graphics in Tiger look really rubbish, dark and dull. The wii is capable of far better, even with its limited horsepower.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

got Mario and Sonic Olympics and its a great multiplayer/party game. we were up till 3 one night. woke up with 24" Pythons killing me. but was well worth it.

spiderman 3 is a good game but a little short. Zelda rocks. Mario galaxy is amazing. RE Umb Chron is poor compared to other RE games but fun none the less

Got mine about 12 months ago, played it a good bit then not at all for a while then got RE4 and played it a bit, then MP3 an played it a bit more now I have RE:UC and Mario Galaxy and I play for a few hours when I have free time. Getting free time is the hardest bit TBH

I got mine Christmas last year. Played it for a good few months but wasn't amazingly impressed. I'm not one for graphics, and I always love the fun games associated with Nintendo, as opposed to Playstation, and I must say the Wii is not a gimmick. But don't expect to be playing it all the time - it does get boring. And it's only now that I've started playing it again because I got Mario+Sonic at Olympic Games (not a brilliant game but it's fun when you play multiplayer and there's lots to do).

I think the Wii itself is fantastic but it's the lack of decent games that p1sses me off. When I first got it - Zelda (****e). Red Steel (****e). I was really annoyed at wasting my money. Then I got the free roaming The Godfather which was alright. And now, after playing Mario+Sonic, and after trying Mario Galaxy (which I'm going to get - looks great) - hopefully there'll be some more good releases.

Waited until two months ago to get one and glad I did now. Mario Galaxy is probably worth the admission price alone. Im playing through Metroid Prime 3 now, and after a shaky Halo-esque start, it really does pick up. I wasn't a big fan of the first game, but this one is proving to be alot of fun.

Also, the VC is a wonderful invention. Recently picked up Super Mario World and Super Metroid: two wonderful games that I have never had the opportunity to sit down and play at my own pace before (previous plays were relegated to brief visits to SNES owning friends' houses).

Ironically (and atypically!) the game we play most is the game that came with it, Wii Sports. We have Golf down to a tee (excuse the pun) and have gotten to the stage where we play on one foot sometimes (and if you forget to play on one foot when the situation demands it, you have to go into the other room, close the door and play on one foot, blind!).

My best round is 8 under par, can anyone beat that? :)

Bowling is also a perennial favourite, though I cannot claim to be the apartment champion at that :(

Right now I'm playing Xbox a lot, simply because a lot of the single player games that have come out for it over xmas are excellent, but whenever there is a group of us around, its always the Wii we play.

ps: The Wii is NOT a hard core gamer system. Don't buy it if you are looking for amazing graphics etc. The emphasis is on fun, multi-player games that are party-hits and lots of fun for groups of people (like Bowling and Golf!).
If you are looking for Halo-esque single player epics, you can get Metroid 3 and RE4 but you are misusing the system imho and should buy an xbox (I have one of those too!)

played wii sports a good bit when i got it 1st a couple of months ago. Didnt touch once i got COD4 for the 360. 360 broke so bought Super Mario Galaxy and i played that for a bit until the 360 came back. Havent played it since.
As was said before it more of a fun console than a hardcore one.
    Get both!
Actually play my DS more than the Wii
Get all 3! (and an R4 cartridge for the DS for "homebrew" games)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭johnny_adidas

sounds like its perfect for the fun factor and its something to pass a few hours on bad winter nights when there's nothing on the tv. suppose in my mind its more to do with everyone getting involved rather than watching different programs in different rooms etc.
mario will probably be the only one player game ill buy for it to be honest and that and the ps3 will be for my own time.

I haven't played my wii in over 3 months mainly due to the unavailability of good games in the game shops in my area.
In the beginning i was playing it every day and was hooked on Zelda and the fun factor of Wii Sports and Wii Play. During the Summer i just lost interest.
I cannot find guitar hero for the wii in any shop - when i do get it i'm sure i'll become addicted again.

Never played 07 on the Wii but from all accounts I've heard, the swing is much better on 08. Have to admit, I like the Tiger Woods games on all formats!

Played teh wii a good bit when I first got it, but then hit a 6 month slump where it was little more than a web browser. With Maraio Galaxy/Metroid I'm playing it more than I ever had. As many would probably agree, it compliments the 360 well, probs wouldn't cut it alone for hardcore gamers.

Hey couldny find a thread that might help me with my problem, I bought a Wii for my 4 year old from Santa but today when we tried to play games on it(tried a few to see if it was just one particular disc) It came up okay on the Wii menu but when we tried to get into the game itself the console sounded as if it was choking & stopped & an error message came up, Ive tried everything that the website is saying & the booklet. Nothing is happening....my poor baby has been in tears all day....he thinks santa broke it cause he was bold...tried to call Nintendo....are they good at rectifying problems??I cannot find the receipt & the shop I bought it wont hear of it....gobeens

Are you sure you put the disc in the right way around?

Yes I'm still playing my wii. I stopped for a couple of months after an orgy of metroid and galaxy, but I'm back and have just started RE4 again on pro mode :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

Sounds like the disc is in right way up or the game wouldn't show up on the main channel select screen. Unfortunately that would probably mean there's a hardware problem somewhere..... if you manage to find the receipt then the shop is your best bet. If you can't find it then ninty will hve to sort you out.

In a similiar way to johnnyadidas.Have a 360 but cant see that many great games to keep me going through 2008, with the exception of GTA-IV, of course. So spending the respectable price of 270 + mario galaxy(obviously) seems quite a good idea to occupy myself.I actually had a gamecube for a few years and hand on heart i prefered it to ps2(which i subsequently got instead of gamecube because of lack of games). The thing is that as far as i can see a lot of the games comin out on wii look fairly s""t so would it be worth gettin it for the few good games that come out(mariokart, zelda, metroid, etc...), the nintendo games mostly?????BTW, is there a brain training game comin to wii or is there already one there??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

Got a wii a year ago, in the process of selling now. Bit of a disapointment the games that were released, and tbh I don't touch the thing much. Relise now a 360 would suit my gaming needs much better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭zuchum

I own the Wii60. I play both equally pretty much, and ocmpletely disagree that the Wii is a casual gamer console in comparison to the 360. If you consider hardcore gaming to be an abundance of FPS's with amazing graphics...perhaps...but if you mean really great games that take ages to complete, which is generally what I consider hardcore, there are loads of titles, and especially loads of which are underrated/ignored.

Just got Super Paper Mario from my gf! And Guitar Hero 3 on wii! And call of duty 4 on 360!!

    it's gonna be a good january... :)

Still play Wii Sports. Got Mario & Sonic got to Olympics and that got a bash over xmas/new years (group mode only)

Missus is obsessed with Mario Galaxy. I play Mario Kart 64 on the Virtual Console a bit. Also use the Wii Internet Channel for a second browser (usually keeping a scoreboard open while watching sports...)

    I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore gamer

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

I play very few video gamers these days. Got Mario galaxy a while ago and am still playing it. The few big titles planed for 2008 will be more then enough to keep me coming back to the wii.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

Havne't played it in a few months, but I'm gonna finish the last Temple on Zelda tomorrow at long last, and then crack open Mario Galaxy and give it a go!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭Cully

I love my Wii, but I haven't played it for a while because I bought a 42" TV and an Xbox360 (got them in a deal near xmas)....

The games are completely different than the xbox/ps3.... if you like tacky/fun games... the Wii is great... I spent so much time playing all of Wario Ware.... <3 the final dance level.

I'll go back to it when I'm bored of my xbox... or when Wii Fit / Mario Kart is out.... I did get about 10 xbox360 games in the sales, so that might be a little while yet.

Got the Wii on release day way back when. Got stuck straight into Zelda, Then red steel between bouts of having people over for Sports. Warioware led to a lull in games.

Cathcing games I'd missed and always regretted on Virtual Console and sports kept the machine alive. Mario Strikers was an excellent injection of greatness to the system and still the only game I haven't managed to finish on the machine. RE:4 was amazing and Eledees was great fun leading up to Metroid Prime and Mario Galaxy both amazing games.

About Halfway through Galaxy I got a 360 cause I couldn't resist the lure of COD4. 360 gets more play at the moment but Galaxy is 8 stars from Completion with Paper Mario waiting to be played. Also interested in tracking down a copy of Scarface which will keep the gaming going on it for a few months yet.

Never regretted the machine having gotten oh so many hours out of it.

Wow thats good!!! my record is 7 under. Wii sports q. is there like 3000 pts AI's in the single player, like in tennis I have 2400 pts and i get like 10 for winning a match 45-0

I got it on launch along with Zelda and to be honest that's the only Wii game I really played until Metroid. I played Lylat Wars for a few weeks on the VC a while back but other than that the time between Zelda and Metroid was void of any entertainment.

I'm playing it now for Mario Galaxy but I may be waiting until Smash Bros. or MK Wii before I pick it up again which is probably more down to me being conservative about what games I buy than anything else.

My best is 10 under par and it was kinda a fluke... Was playing with my friend who normally beat me by 3-4 shots or so, but I just had a good round.

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking... The AI in Tennis goes up to about 1900/2000 at the most. Once or twice I had a wierd "visit" from a professional which was 2800... I assume that was someone from the online thing somewhere... My level is about 3200 on Tennis at the mo. 1600 or so is the highest on Boxing. (the trainer).

I got 8 strikes in a row once on the bowling... I was gutted when I got a 9 and spare on the second last frame :(

I've played Wii Sports too much :/

I've had a Wii since launch and have had a pretty good relationship with it.
I also have a 360, DS and PS3 so I never have to worry about not enough to play, when one machine runs dry of interesting games for a while, I jus fire up something on one of the others!
However, regarding the Wii, I just finished a 2 week marathon of Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, culminating in a breakfast time session this morning resulting in the defeat of Dark Samus and the Phazon threat..... which is nice.
Now I have Super Mario Galaxy to get to, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Endless Ocean and Resi Evil Umbrella Chronicles to occupy me for the next while.

    Happy Days!

I only got the Wii at Christmas (present from my other half) so I'm no where near bored of it. But I don't sit at it all day long so I can't see myself ever getting bored that quick. ZEDLA Twilight Princess is excellent and I'm really enjoying it. It's worth saying though that it was originally intended for Gamecube so there is probably something even better in the works when designed soley for Wii. I love the little extras with the Wii version though such as the remote sounds and slashing action. It's an amazing game too, gets you really involved plus it's a pretty freaky storyline. I've also got Link's Crossbow Training which is a good one to have with the Wii Zapper although not played much yet due wanting to complete Twilight Princess first.

The group games are one of the most fun aspects of it so I hope to find more of Them. I've got the Mario and Sonic one but not played it much yet but that will probably change tonight with the lads round for beers & games. Wii Sports is always a winner. During Christmas here all the adults wanted to play Wii Sports bowling and the "kids" (read "those in their 20s") wanted to play a board game!
