Ok, so it seems RTE, in their wisdom, have seen fit to make a spin off series featuring the most annoying and least funny character from the hugely annoying and not funny 'Naked Camera' series by the very annoying and not funny Pj Gallagher.

I bet it will be great.
Up there with the english class probably.

Jake is a guy wearing an ugly ill fitting suit who talks in a very annoying voice, waves a newspaper and whistles constantly.

He's an annoying character. He was annoying in short bursts, he's going to be very annoying over 30 minutes.

I don't think annoying characters are funny.

Well fortunately for you, you don't have to watch either the character or the show so what's the problem?

And just because you think the character is annoying doesn't mean everyone else does. I think both PJ Gallagher and his characters are class.

Well if Lee Evans can sell out the Albert Hall.....

Jake Stevens was funny for maybe... 2 episodes. Then the joke just got old. I'll definitely be steering clear of this!

Naked Camera ia a horrendous programme. Which is odd, as ive seen Gallagher interviewed and he is quite funny in them.

Apart from the brilliant one with Bill O`Herhilly in the taxi it is utter muck.

Looking forward to this: Americans+Weirdo Outsiders = Gold. See Ali G in Da USA.

I've only seen a couple of episodes of Naked Camera but liked it. I don't see why they are limiting themselves to just one character. It could get very old fast. For some reason I always found the woman's character funnier. You know the one that would stop guys and ask them to come to a wedding or would let them off a parking ticket if they went to the cinema with her.

i personally thought that was the worst part of the show...considering it had some serious competition that was a fair achievement!!

I enjoyed Jake Stephens in the first series but then he began to overdo the character too much and it became overbearing. When he started doing that, people just didnt take him seriously and it wasnt as funny.

the oul one who talks about riding and sex would go down well in the states. sure they're all at it over there

    Jake is brilliant.
"To be or not to be WHOOT...Thats the question I'm askin ye! Whhoo!

    Jesus the yanks are unreal

It all seemed vey "set up" alright. I know most of this stuff generally is but you don't always get that impression. Missed the start. How did they account for the camera crea accompanying Jake ?
Great to see Eric Estrada back on the box though !!! For that alone 6 out of 10. Hope it improves.

im a fan of him but im very disappointed not funny kinda annoying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 829 ✭✭✭standbyme

Hopefully it can only get better, as the Americans are very gullible & probably see this everyday?

I heard PJ mention this on Ray D'arcy a good while back, about being cuffed by 'Ponch' as well as the rest,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Jake Stevens is more amusing than this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,799 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

    rubbish.
Even the yanks can see through such an an annoying and one dimensional character. At least Borat had the whole cultural anarchy thing going for him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭Sizzler

Either Erik Estrada is a much better actor then I ever gave him credit for or he was majorly pi**ed off !

How many episodes is this series, I cant see how they could get any more mileage out of than last night

I must be in the minority, because I found it hilarious.
I also like Naked Camera, the auld wan reminds me of my mother (don't tell her I said that!!):D

You're supposed to do "Yore Ma" jokes about other peoples' mothers not your own.

I watched it last night and was very disappointed with it. It was like they didn't know what they wanted to do with it. It was quite obvious that the majority of the scenes were setup and if that's the best they could do with a setup I really worry for the future of Irish Comedy TV.

It's a pity that it wasn't that good because I liked Naked Camera (got old fast though) and I think PJ is a very funny stand up. It probably would've worked better as a 10 minute filler between shows rather than a half hour each week.

I didn't mind Naked Camera but Jake Stevens is a fairly annoying character alright. I mean what does he do? Holds a newspaper and whistles a lot and that's it.

Couldn't blame somebody if they chinned him.

I could only watch about 5 minutes before I had to turn it off. I have no idea who approved it but they should be shot. Awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭mickd

Not great but it could be worse you could of had Maeve Higgins going statside

Not good at all, and I am a fan of him. He looked like a joke and not in a good way.

There was some real cringe moments.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭Lil' Smiler

Ah i didn't enjoy the show.

Has Jake Stevens passed his sell by date??

Not really much he can do here now anymore as Jake is there?? Most people would know who he is

My housemate was watching this and I foolishly stayed in the living room and bore witness to a painfully dull and unfunny piece of television. Bleurgh.

Jake Stevens isn't funny in small doses. He's tediously unfunny in large doses. He could possible be fatal in a series long dose.

I'm not going to watch it again to find out.

    Rubbish.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭estebancambias

Horrible. Did anyone just see that exchange? Talk about 'humour' falling flat on its face.

not great at all...some funny bits, but tied together so badly...

One of the most annoying, boring and drawn out characters!

Pure RTE dribble at its best.

I watched the first 5 minutes of the first episode and turned the channel...

    i wont be watching again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,567 ✭✭✭delta_bravo

I think the guy at the end summed it up: 'So all he (Jake) does it just wave his newspaper around'. Something along the lines of that anyway. Its too scripted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭magnumlady

I thought this weeks one was awful. Painful to watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭Sizzler

Elvis's son (the pool cleaner) came out of it with more credibility than Jake in last nights epsiode.

All I can say is they obviously never screen tested this before airing....BIG mistake lads.

Yeah I watched this last night too. Have to say it was complete ****e!

Completely agree, it was embarrassing. Very disappointed with PJ, the formula he had for naked camera worked, he should have used the same thing in the US.

Making Jake almost feels like a poor attempt at a friendly borat.

RTE really need to appoint a head of comedy.

Coincidentally i have PJ's stand up dvd too and i thought it was poor aswell.

I thought Pat Kenny held that role :D

The only reason borat, ali g & bruno worked so well in the usa compared to this was they were in complete control the whole time with the conversations/setups, making total idiots out of the americans. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIStqMJsimg&feature=related

The main weakness in makin jake imo is the americans are getting the better of him in some situations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,313 ✭✭✭✭Sam Kade

Wouldn't you love to give him a wallop of his paper accross the back of his head maybe a baseball bat would be better. What an idiot.

Do RTÉ do screen tests often/ever?

As for the show horribly contrived version of Borat and completely unfunny.
