Slimming down

Hi, (this is my first post, long time reader first time writer!)
I'm looking to get fit over the next year and i know that alot of peoples new year resolutions are to get fit but this is actually the first time in the last few months that i've had time to train and get in shape. I've been meaning to get fit for a long while but due to various different incidents I haven't been able to (Broken metatarsel X2,college finals).

    A brief backround:
    20 years old
    5' 9"
    17 and a half stone.

I'm a big guy but i've always been physically big, even when I was very fit I was still very broad (not overweight at all just wide). I used to play alot of rugby at a high level when I was in school. I was a prop. I also played football for the last 3 years until I broke the metatasals twice. I put on muscle very easily.

    AIMS:
To get fitter, I want to slim down physically as well, I.e. not just lose weight but to reduce my size physical size(if that makes sense?). I used to go to the gym alot but I was doing heavy weights and this isnt the route I want to take at the moment. I felt I was lifting what I was aiming for but that that in the long run if I didnt keep it up I'd put on weight easily.

I hate to run long distances because I just find it boring, I much perfer doing things like sets and drills. Does anybody have any suggestions on what sort of drills i should be doing? I like to do things such as suicides on rugby pitches and stuff. Thanks for the advice!

P.s Ideally I'd like to lose 2 and a half stone and look alot more toned.

    Ever hear of CrossFit?

It has weights but the workouts are predominantly performed in under 20 minutes at a high intensity, combining powerlifting, bodyweight exercises and sprint distance work.

You also need to look at diet, whether you gain weight (muscle mass) or loss weight (excess fat) on any exercise protocol will depend on what you're eating.
