    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/26/tiger.attack/index.html

Authorities have searched the San Francisco Zoo four times and are certain that there are no more victims of a Siberian tiger who escaped from her pen and mauled to death one man and attacked two others Tuesday.
"There were no other tigers that were lose in the zoo and no more victims," San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong said Wednesday.

Tuesday night and Wednesday morning searchers used infrared and heat-sensing tools and also walked the area between where the tiger is believed to have gotten out of her cage and a cafe -- a route of one-eighth of a mile -- where the attacks took place.

It's unclear how long the 300-pound female tiger was out of her cage, Fong said.

Police are taking statements from anyone who might have seen the animal.

Police shot shot dead the tiger Tuesday as she attacked her second and third victims, Fong said.

Another incident of American police brutality?

Na, if the tiger was attacking people then the police had to shoot. But otherwise they should have tranquilizer darts.

The same tiger attacked a zoo employee earlier in the year too.

Wow imagine just walking innocently through a zoo, all relaxed, and suddenly you see a huge facking tiger just right in front of you
At least he could have 'killed by a tiger' on his tombstone. That'd be pretty cool.

What caught my eye was that the attack was meant to have taken place after 5 pm, which was after that section of the zoo was closed to the public.

I would have thought as much. Expect to see Californian pussycats looting rubbish-bins in response to this outrage.

    Fair play to the tiger.

I think he would prefer to read that on SOMEONE else's tombstone. Sad Christmas for his family :(

    What about the poor tiger?
I don't know if the tiger had any family.

Imagine innocently walking through Siberia, all relaxed, and suddenly a load of men shooting you with darts and locking you up.

At least he could have "Shoot Trying To Escape" on his tombstone. Actually, they'll probably chop him up and feed him to the other animals.

I heard about this on the news. Sad the tiger had to be put to death, because Im all for animal rights and everything, but if the tiger was endangering the life of a person and had already killed someone and injured someone on a previous occassion then I think the correct course of action was taken. Still, it'll make you apprichate your zookeeper more the next time you see him

In this case, I don't think "put to death" is quite the right way of saying it. That implies it was done in a thought-out and pre-meditated manner.

It was more like "Holy crap, look what that tiger did to that poor bugger. And he's mauling someone else! Quick, shoot, before it kills him as well." I am not well familiar with tranquilizer darts, but I would strongly doubt that one would have quite the same immediate effect as a .40 cal.

    Funny.

You know that under CA law, anyone, police or otherwise, is entitled to use lethal force (Even against a human) to defend another human life? CA Penal Code S197. I strongly doubt you could make the argument that life and limb were not at stake.

I think they just stopped letting people in after 5, and whoever was already in was allowed stay for another hour.

The guy who died was only 17.

I'm all for treating animals right, but this tiger was on top of the 3rd victim and the only thing to do was shoot. If I had a bloody tiger on top of me I wouldn't want people standing around wondering what type of tranquiliser is needed!

Ahh thanks for that, I was wondering why there were people there if the zoo was shut.

I see on this mornings news they are starting to think that the tiger was let out either on purpose or by someone messing around with the door to it's enclosure.

For the record, I think the right action was taken.

    New article up on CNN:

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/27/tiger.attack/index.html

Officers yelled at the tiger to stop, and did not fire immediately "for fear that they would not be able to contain their fire," she said. "When the yelling was occurring, the animal turned toward the officers," who then shot and killed the animal, Fong said.

Listening to the local news station in the car, apparently this could well have been an example of Darwin in action. Death by Stupidity in other words.

According to the information released by SFPD, evidence is pointing to the three attacked persons (who were visiting the zoo together) having been taunting the tiger by throwing sticks and pine cones at it, and then, once the tiger was suitably annoyed, clambered over the wall/fence. The tiger then decided to have a crack at them, leaped the moat towards the fence, grabbed a hold of one kid's leg as a purchase, allowing it to bound up over the fence itself.

Sounding more and more like the Norn Iron young lady who had her arm ripped off/nearly ripped off in Dublin Zoo a few years ago.

"I know, wait till no one is looking and jump the 3 gates, run a few hundred yards down a lane behind the tiger house..........and stick my arm into the tiger pen to pet the big puddy cat!!!" "Oh Noes, My arm is inside the tigers Belly!!, Its the Zoo's fault, there should have been a sign that specifically said...'WARNING!! DONT jump the 3 gates, run a few hundred yards down a lane behind the tiger house..........and stick your arm into the tiger pen to pet the big puddy cat"

In one of the articles I read about this they were puzzled how the tiger got over the 20ft wall and moat around the enclosure.

My teeny tiny cats could jump a 20ft wall if they realllly wanted to, and as for the moat, I saw on a documentary before that tigers can swim... also this pic proves it pretty well.

    Er, what?

Weren't two of them in a cafe when they were attacked? Like...the tiger specifically hunted down the people that had tormented it?

Thats a cool black-parody-of-a-disney-film right there.

Maybe they had put on Tiger Balm? Bad idea in any zoo. It's like tiger catnip.

Hardly, when 300lbs of feline death is on the lose you tend to shoot to kill in fairness.

Surely the whole concept of wild animals in zoo's is far more brutal?

Poor Old tigger. IM sure Pooh was well distraught at Christmas. Im all for the Tiger hunting down those who tormented it. Id say +1 to the tiger, but -1 for his death.

    I blame Al Quedea Tigerists...
