Anyone know if this will only be released in Dublin in the IMAX or are other cinemas capable of using the technology around the country?
I'm in Cork city and would really love to see it but doubt i would make the trip to Dublin just for a movie!

The IMAX in Dublin closed down a few years ago.

So it won't be there then!

if the imax closed down then there surely will be a screening of it somewhere else in dublin,i wouldn't travel just to see a movie i'm hoping glasgow imax will get it if they don't then that will be that for me.

No i certainly won't travel but im asking is DOES it have to be an IMAX cinema?
If its just digital with special glasses surely most modern cinemas could show it??

Well Beowulf in 3D uses the same technology and I believe that was just shown in 3D at Dundrum. I could be wrong though.

It doesn't have to be an IMAX screen.

The SGC in Dungarvan are advertising it on their site also. Not too far from Cork.

Thanks for that Mossy.Dungarvan it is!
I pity any U2 fans in other counties who will have a long trip if they want to see it!
1 cinema outside of Dublin is a bit crap, you would think that recently built cinemas would have put in this system.I would think there will be a lot more of this type of film.

I agree, it's a shame not more Cinemas are implementing this technology. Any other movie I wouldn't bother going to see in the cinema, a few exceptions, but the majority I just download. This 3D stuff can't be replecated to the same effect on TV's, so I'd be more inclined to see it in the cinema.

Ill definitely be going to see this. In Dundrum id imagine. Id say as more 3d films come out in the next few years you will see more and more cinemas getting the technology.

From the reviews i have read this should be fairly brilliant for a U2 fan!!One reviewer even said he preferred it to being at a real concert as you could see more and it was more comfortable!
    Should be good:D

This is being shown at the Gate cinema in Cork as well, not sure which one though.
Will find out and post later.

Its going to be shown in my local cinema in Munich which is ironically called "Cinema"

They've shown a lot of the recent 3D movies, A Nightmare before Christmas and the Beowolf one.

I think they have a digital projector to show the 3D movies, but I could be wrong. Just a thought.

Has anyone actually SEEN a 3d movie and what were their thoughts?

I seen a Nightmare before Christmas and Beowolf in 3D recently and i thought it was ok. What they had done is 3D-ise (if you'll allow me to use that term) a normal movie. It didn't work very well to be honest.

I have seen actual 3D movies in the Imax in Neurnberg and they were fantastic. The stuff you'll see in normal cinema's is ok, just a gimmick to be honest.

Is beowulf just 3d-ised? I was going to watch it this weekend and was hoping it was a proper 3d film.

I've also seen proper 3d movies before and they were incredible, one set in space was like you were there yourself. This U2 one is definitely proper 3d.

Actually just checked the Imax website and its an Imax 3D movie. Didn't blow me away (maybe it was the story) , but worth seeing anyway.

No details of the U2 movie on the website.

Cinemas will need to have a digital projector if they wish to screen the U2 (or any other film) in 3D. So that restricts it to a small subset.

Well that looks the way things are going to go with James Cameron,Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson all working on 3D movies and the CEO of Dreamworks animation has said that from next year all of their movies will be in 3D.
It will be the future for a lot of movies and cinemas will quickly move to get those seats filled.

Actually there's a lot of cinema's with Digital projectors. 3D films need a special type of projector that projects two in sync images both with different polarised light. They also need a special screen with a special coating for it to work. That's a lot of work to upgrade a cinema to 3D. Have to say I saw Beowulf in 3D and thought the effect was excellent.

Storm cinema is Limerick were boasting about how they had digital projection in all their screens when they opened first a year or two ago but they have yet to show a 3D movie so im guessing they really didnt have anything too special installed:(

My guess is that all these cinemas that advertise their digital setup will have to get their act together and install the 3D setup if they want to compete.

ive noticed on the movie website that it is going to be played in the swords cinema (movies @ in the pavillians) does anyone know if this means the VIP screen, because i didnt think the swords cinema had 3d capabilities!

  • As far as i know, both Swords and Dundrum (Movies@) both have mostly digital projectors, which is one of the 2 factors in having 3D films, A special silver screen is the other factor.

Movies@Dundrum have their "silver screen" in Screen1 - which has the mezz area.

I'd say its probably company policy, and so would be the same in Swords?

also need a special cinema screen too, which not all places have. Dungarvan got their 3D set up going about 3minutes before Beowulf 3D was due to start!

As to the poster who said they JUST 3d-ise a normal movie - i disagree. Nightmare Before Christmas was victim to this, and not all that impressive. Beowulf was amazing though. The movie itself is kinda poor, but the 3d effects were amazing at times. (such as the spear, the arrows, the scenes in the water)

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Neo#

I saw a poster in cineworld yesterday saying taking bookings now so id say immediately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭rizzla

It's annoying how expensive it is, I know you get the special glasses and all but I still have mine from Beowulf 3D. People should have to pay the regular price of admission if they have their own Real D glasses.

Plus, it saves the rainforest, and all that jazz.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 ellak

Yeah its a bit pricey alright, but i suppose you can just go up to see the cheaper earlier shows? As for the movie itself I wouldn't be comparing it to Nightmare before Christmas as this was specifically shot with 3d cameras so it should look amazing on the big screen!
