I must listen to some of the more recent Autechre albums...I loved Incunabula, Amber and Tri Repetae but had heard negative comments about more recent albums and never actually checked them out myself.

I didn't like Untilted much but I'm more than willing to give new Autechre a chance. However (and I hate saying this) I think I prefer the old stuff.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I suspect I wouldn't like their more recent stuff, but I am kinda stuck at the moment hunting down so much ambient and IDM etc from the early to mid-90's that I can barely keep up with...

I am absolutely amazed by the amount of excellent albums I have discovered in these genres over the last while. I have downloaded a lot on soulseek and in turn tried to hunt down the actual cd's, be it in a record store or second-hand online - I am still a firm believer in owning the actual cd or vinyl release but a lot of these albums prove difficult to buy unless through somewhere online like discogs. City Discs though have been great in sourcing some of them.

Some of the real gems that I have listened to of late have been:

    The Higher Intelligence Ageny
    Beaumont Hannant
    Biosphere
    Black Dog
    Ultramarine
    Seefeel
    Plaid
    Children of the Bong
    many releases on e:mit label - http://www.discogs.com/label/em%3At

I could go on but you get my drift and its a tad off topic to the thread :)

I liked the Untitled and Confeld (sp?) albums for their overall strangeness, they used some wicked rhythmic programming with Max/MSP there. Will be interesting to see what direction the new album will take.

Not off-topic at all, its great to get good IDM recommendations!

IDM has been a huge thing for me the last couple of years, I was always into the sound since back with some of the early Warp releases but its only now that I have really been digging deeper...I have soulseek to thank for that along with discogs and a serious addiction to hunting down the music :)

If you like early Autechre and have not yet had the pleasure of The Higher Intelligence Agency or Beaumont Hannant, I would highly recommend checking them out...difficult to get on cd so download may be the only option. Basically any of either of their albums are amazing...

    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Higher+Intelligence+Agency%2C+The

    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Beaumont+Hannant

Another few spectacular albums off the top of my head...

Legion of Green Men - Spatial Specific
    http://www.discogs.com/release/42058

    Bola - Soup
    http://www.discogs.com/release/1923

    Woob - Woob
    http://www.discogs.com/release/3330

End of Orgy - Caramel Amer
    http://www.discogs.com/release/261764

    Synaesthesia - Desideratum
    http://www.discogs.com/release/98641

    Pentatonik - Anthology
    http://www.discogs.com/release/14772

    Soma - The Inner Cinema
    http://www.discogs.com/release/147505

Global Communication - Any release basically, or Tom Middleton releases
    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Global+Communication

The Irresistible Force - Flying High
    http://www.discogs.com/release/116868

Will recommend more another day if you like.

Its funny, I had mentioned IDM and Ambient in Dance/Electronic before and there was no interest really...forgot to look here again :)

Excellent, cheers for the suggestions. It's an area of music that I know the "stars" like Autechre, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, etc. but very little about the genre as a whole. Must check some of this out. Is there anything there that you recommend that's still in print (i.e. not some white label pressing that goes for ridiculous money on ebay) that I should check out pronto?

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Unfortunately a lot of what I have suggested or most of the IDM/ambient from the key period in the early to mid 90's seems to be deleted, hence my love for soulseek...which I would recommend if you don't currently use (but do be prepared for a new addiction :) ) I look for most of the music on soulseek and then try to get the original release either in Dublin or online.

There are a good few though that I have managed to pick up lately and would also suggest you look for...they may require ordering through somewhere like City Discs (www.citydiscs.ie) but are well worth the wait. I find Tower Records can be quite good too. A few must-have suggestions -

Children of the Bong - Sirius Sounds
    http://www.discogs.com/release/146622

    Global Communication - 76:14
    http://www.discogs.com/release/525529

The latest Tom Middleton release is also pretty good...
    http://www.discogs.com/release/1020159

    Bola - Soup
    http://www.discogs.com/release/1923

Monolake - Gravity (quite minimal and I found took a couple of listens to click - Hong Kong is also amazing but hard to find on CD)
    http://www.discogs.com/release/11559

    Seefeel - Quique
    http://www.discogs.com/release/15619

    Black Dog Productions - Bytes
    http://www.discogs.com/release/11566

All of the above should be easy enough to pick up or order.

A label worth checking out also if you like ambient is fax -
    http://www.discogs.com/label/Fax+%2B49-69%2F450464

    - A lot of the releases are seriously rare and sell for a fortune but they do re-release albums and are worth watching out for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I don't use Soulseek (I used to but have given up on P2P and torrents on principal) but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for some of the above in shops/online stores. Cheers!

Artificial Intelligence 1 and 2 from Warp are good starting points for people who want to get into this genre. They're both amazing compilations, and feature many big names who were small names at the time, e.g. Autechre, Aphex Twin, even Richie Hawtin shows up under the alias UP!, i think both are fairly readily available in HMV etc.

Definitely, amazing albums...I saw them both recently in City Discs.

Every album in the Artificial Intelligence series is excelllent and worth hunting down, some easier to get than others:

Agreed. Been slowly adding the individual AI albums to my collection over the past number of years. You can always pick up most early Warp albums directly from the source if you're having trouble finding them elsewhere.

Offtopic: Shame they dropped the excellent old warpmart for something that looked like it was cobbled together in 2 minutes by the e-commerce programmer :(

Has anyone listened to the compilations Warp released on their their 10th anniversary?

Never saw that Warpmart before...thanks for the link, will cause me more financial trouble though! I am missing B12, Speedy J and FUSE to complete the series, hope they have them but I suspect not as I think they have been deleted a while now.

I have two of the compilations they released for the 10th anniversary -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/24240

I really like the above, overall a very good comp...must listen again actually, been a while. Great to have so many of the early Warp classics on cd.

    http://www.discogs.com/release/24243

I just got the above about 4 weeks ago in HMV Grafton St. Some excellent tracks on it and generally quite impressed, needs more listens though as above - thats the problem with an addiction to buying cd's with not enough time to listen!

Thanks for the great links above, Felixdhc. Listening to Legion of Green Men right now.

You're right those deleted AI releases are almost impossible to find.

What else would you recommend to fans of Autechre, Aphex Twin, Orbital, The Orb and Underworld, circa 1993-96?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭griffdaddy

I have 'Ginger' by Speedy J if anyone ehhh 'wants to know where to get it';)
If you want similar stuff to that check out Frequencies by LFO, they pretty much started all this shít. yes i know kraftwerk started it before them and so on...:D

On a side note, if you're interested in the people and machines behind all forms of electronic music this blog is worth checking out: http://musicthing.blogspot.com/

LFO - Freq. has been on my long finger list for ages. I remember when LFO released LFO in 1990. Apparently the bass line was so low it couldn't be reproduced by some club sound systems at the time :)

There are so many one-off albums as listed above. In addition to them, have you checked out anything by Plaid? They are what Black Dog became. Also on that note, anything by Black Dog?

If you have nothing by Plaid, I would start with their first which is -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/3657

I like all their albums but the above I think is the best, really excellent album.

From Black Dog I would go with any of the re-release albums on Soma -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/1129739
    http://www.discogs.com/release/890689

You probably have the Black Dog Productions Bytes album which is also on the AI series but if not it is a must have! -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/11566

What about the Plastikman releases? -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/2256
    http://www.discogs.com/release/666

Very minimal and took a couple of listens to click for me but well worth it when they did.

That Children of The Bong album is really excellent too, would definitely recommend -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/146622

LFO Frequencies is also definitely worth getting, I was the same and had on the long finger for a while but bought it about a year ago. I wouldn't consider it a frequent listen cd but does get a worthwhile spin from time to time.

I urge people also to check out Tom Middleton/Global Communication, really excellent music.

    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Tom+Middleton
    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Global+Communication

    ...start with this -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/525529

Let me know if you need more!

Oh and griffdaddy, what you sellin Ginger for?

    Cheers, Felixdhc.

Yes "Not for Threes" is excellent. How would you rate their later albums?
I have "Bytes" and "Spanners" by The Black Dog. Both very good albums. :)

If you can still find it Cream of Ambient Visions is a great compilation with mid-90's tracks by the likes of Underworld, Black Dog and Sabres of Paradise on it.

Going to look into those Black dog re-releases and Plastikman, Children of the Bong (names sound very familiar...) and Global Comm. stuff.

Picked up LFO's "Advance" about 11-12 years ago when Comet Records in Temple Bar did loads of electronic music. It seemed fairly minimalist back then, though I've not listened to it in ages.

So, has anyone heard any of the new Autechre material?
I stopped buying their albums after ep7 and didn't care for much for it or Chiastic Slide (the cover art is good if you like The Designers Republic work.)

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Yeah the rest of Plaids albums are very good...not quite as good though as Not For Threes. Although, I only have Not For Threes and Spokes on CD, the rest are 'digital' format which I'm not too keen on these days.

I don't have Spanners myself, must get that...is it as good as Bytes?

That comp looks nice alright, but wouldn't imagine it would be easy to get a copy from the looks of discogs.

Don't think I have heard that LFO Advance, must check it out.

The latest I have from Autechre is Tri Repetae so definitely couldn't comment on any more recent releases.

I was listening again yesterday to Plastikman, 'Muzik'. It really does grow more and more with each listen - it is an excellent cd.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Owenw

You can check out all the tracks on Spanners here
    and LFO - Advance here

Have you listened to any Future Sound Of London / Amorphous Androgynous albums from the early 90's?

Cheers for the links to listen :)

Yeah have all FSOL albums...only completed them in the last couple of years. Only actually bought that first Amorphous release about a year ago, what an album, really excellent.

I bought the two other Amorphous albums a while ago too and am very impressed - hard to imagine that FSOL are behind them, could well be a psychedelic rock band from the 60's! Not to everyones taste but I love them, good driving music. 'Divinity' on The Isness is really excellent.

Yea that album is surprisingly good. I think it fits well between Lifeforms and ISDN. Love the Predator sample kicking off the opening track!

Took me a while to appreciate the radical change in direction after Dead Cities, but The Isness is a real grower.

Well back to the original topic, the new Autechre album is available to buy as a download right now or to be pre-ordered in a normal or special edition (bonus CD and stainless steel case!) from Warpmart now.

Bonus CD AND a stainless steel case...that's just the type of thing to tempt me now I must say!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I'm tempted to get this but after listening to the mp3 samples on bleep.com I wavered a bit. Autechre are definitely still steering away from the melodic stuff they've done in the past. That isn't a bad thing in itself but the complex rhythmic stuff they're great at isn't really catching me anymore, or else it just isn't as good as it used to be. Although thats only after one listen. I'll pick up the mp3s at some stage and come to a proper solution then.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 compostrebirth

Autechre's genius never seems to wane. I checked out some samples on bleep.com but have yet to hear this new one properly. What are peoples reactions to it?

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I missed out on the special edition anyway, it's sold out now on warpmart. I think the release date is around the 1st week of March sometime? From what I have heard I do plan to buy this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jtsuited

didn't know about this new album until reading this thread. great news. i actually really like the peel session they did.

if you have max/msp and dig about on the interweb you'll find a few reverse-engineered autechre patches. Well worth checking out if you're into that type of thing.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

This is out in the shops on Friday, really looking forward to it based on what I have heard.

Did anyone get it online prior to the Irish release date?

Not yet. I wish Warp releases were on emusic.com, if so I'd have my grubby paws on the mp3s already :(

As we were talking about early vs. late Autechre earlier I thought I'd mention that I got a lend of Lipswitch by Richard Devine. Its well worth a listen if anyone is into the wicked-complex-rhythmic-programming or glitch aspect of Autechre's later stuff. Really cool actually. You can nod your head along to it in a sort of way you can't do with much of Autechre's stuff. If ya know what I mean...

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I'm not too pushed on MP3 releases for some reason, think I prefer to have something physical for my money - I have a thing for these 'Digipak' CD cases at the moment, the artwork looks so much better than a sleeve in a jewel case. Also, you can't beat the sound of Vinyl or CD, especially on a decent system.

Don't know that Richard Devine release, must look into... sounds like my cup of tea alright.

Another that I am really diggin at the moment is Amon Tobin. I had only bought his most recent album but I picked up 'Out From Out Where' the other day and what a fantastic album. Must check out more from him.

Got the new Autechre album yesterday but only got as far as about the 3rd track due to the wife complaining about it! Will have a listen on my own later hopefully. Anyone else get it yet? In HMV for €16.99

Went to see them in Melkweg on Thursday, the music was great, but 2 major major gripes that kinda ruined my evening. first of all, they only played for an hour, but that that didn't matter too much, cause it's amsterdam, and most support acts here would warrant a night out on their own standing in Ireland. Second of all, the Autechre show was in total darkness, i.e. no lights, no lasers, no nothing for that hour, just two little green lights were they were playing. I don't really know what they (or the lights people) were trying to do, but it just slowed people down and pissed them off more than anything, everyone i talked to thought the same thing. Still, what they played was great, some of it really was very 'wow' even though the atmosphere was a bit mute. Don't have the new album so i don't know if they played any of it, but i didn't recognise anything they did play, although i did like it. there ya go, one vague review, :D

I saw Autechre in the TBMC a couple of years ago and had the same impression tbh. I think the no lighting thing is intended to help the audience focus on the music but I'm not sure how well that worked. I found myself staring at the pair of them wondering what they were doing more that I usually would have! Live Autechre aint really my cup of tea I suppose.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Yeah Foley Room is excellent, I must get some more from him.

Well, Autechre...hmmm. I like it, I think. I need to give it some more listens as it is definitely hard on the ears at times but I liked it at the same time. There are some really good moments and then others where I felt like skipping the track. As I say though, I need to listen more before final judgement :)

My copy arrived yesterday, I've only had a chance to listen to the bonus disc so far. I like what's on that, some of it is very easy to listen to and some of it has that abstract Untilted vibe. More on the album proper soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I have to say I'm impressed with this album. Some of it is a bit bland but most of it doesn't sound like Autechre, it sounds a bit more sedate and ambient. I prefer this to the last couple of albums. Anyone else listen to it yet?

And as an aside, the special edition is going for ridiculous money on eBay (I paid £31.50 including postage from Warp).

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I still haven't given this a proper listen really. I am mainly listening to old techno and IDM at the moment and can't really tune into the likes of this for now anyway.

Some minimal techno winging its way to me from boomkat.com and I can't wait.

    http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=11757

    http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=11758

Both above probably more suited to dance/eletronic forum but I think some of the lot frequenting here should dig it too :)

One for certain could be deemed experimental even though it is minimal/dub techno is this gem from Deep Chord -

    http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=37153
