Wasn't too impressed with the first installment although might give it a second look.

Second one looks pretty good from the clip there.

    When is it due out?

    Should be out August 22nd.

I downloaded a nice high res video, and boy does it look good! :D

Just edited the first post with a youtube link, so you don't have to sit through IGN's ads... Still worth a look on IGN if you want a nice high quality one though.

    Boy I hate IGN... 30 kb/s :(
Downloaded eventually though and looks great. First one was a terrific film, possibly one of the few lighthearted comic book films to get the tone right (unlike a certain fantastical foursome, for example).

Lollers at the nerdy See You Next Wendesday reference in the trailer :p

Thought the first one was fairly poor apart from Hellboy himself, who was great. Could take or leave the sequel really.

Nice to see the guy from the Witcher breaking into movies now.

Seriously though, I liked the first one well enough, so will definitely check this out. Ron Perlman is great in the role, and del Toro always conjures up some visual treats.

Just after watching the trailer and damn, that looks amazing. I loved the first one and that coupled with my love of all things Del Toro and Perlman should be enough guarantee that I enjoy Hellboy II.

As much as I'm looking forward to this, there is another Del Toro film I want slightly more. His adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. It was supposed to be released in 2009, but has been pushed back till 2010 as he's doing 3993 first.

This looks really amazing and the storyline sounds damn good. I hope we see a return of Kroenen, although it'll probably only be in flashbacks if we do. This white hair dude looks shifty and seems to be on speed for a good amount of the clip. :D

    August 22nd? :(

    I can't wait. I love Hellboy so much :o

When's the next animated film out?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

Fantastic - this should be a quality flick with del toro and perlman on board. Plus Rammstein on the soundtrack cant be bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Q_Ball

I thought the first one was great right up until they ruined the ending. why they had to turn it all mushy is beyond me.

not holding my breath for this one

Next animated one doesn't have a set release date yet, just some time in 2008.

Rammstein isn't on the soundtrack though, they're only on the trailer. For example, the trailer for the first film had Dimmu Borgir, yet they didn't feature in the actual film.

I loved the first one....up until the final act.

I'm not a hellboy fan so I can't comment on anything being canon or not, but the bad guy was fairly lame and I was only in it for Ron Perlman's performance.

Cheers for the heads up OP as I didnt think a trailor was close to being out for HB2 :) Looks all sorts of kick ass :D

He was canon, but he wasn't as fleshed out in the theatrical cut, I felt he had a lot more moments in the director's cut, and that made him a lot more creepy.

Theres was just something about the first Hellboy that didnt sit right with me. I loved Pearlmans performance and the make-up effects were amazing (as with all Del Toro movies). The trailer for The Golden Army DOES looks sweet though :D So I'll defo be going to see it, if for nothing else than to experience the lush visuals on the big screen.

(BTW, did anyone notice how one of the creatures in the trailer looked awfully like the creature from his last movie?)

watched the original for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Can't say I liked it much, it sat in that horrible grey area between an action movie and a comedy. Its like they cut the jokes and action scenes short before they even had a chance to get going. There where also too many slow and drawn out scenes.

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt though as it was an introductory movie to the series. Hopefully the sequel won't feature any faffing about introducing characters and just get down to the usual superhero internal struggle between being just and injust and have loads of action scenes for him to work it out. I really felt Hellboys stone fist wasn't used nearly enough in the last movie

Just walked into Virgin today (the store not an actual Virgin) and lo and behold almost waiting for me was Cronos for €11! Happy days must get around to watching it tonight.
I see Perlman's in it too..

Wasn't overly impressed with the first movie but I did find it entertaining at least...this one however exceeds my wildest expectations and I cannot wait to see it. One of the finest trailers I've seen in a long time.

I liked the first one, I thought the Nazi bad guy was cool, but his one looks even better. My only gripe would be that it looks like Del Toro has good over board with the creature effects and it could effect the movie.

yeah really does look good and who the hell ever thought Mr goss would make a good action baddie. brilliant in blade 2 and now looking very comfortable in this. an the esthetic of this feels like its took all the wonderfull weirdness of pans labrynth. im expecting this to look like a much more polished fillm to the first one.

after what seemed like a really bad start to the year finally were getting some good stuff :)

I can't wait to see this movie. I loved the 1st movie. Ron Pearlman is the perfect choice for Hellboy. Also loved the animated features.

i thought the 1st one was very good....one of the best comic book adaptions of our time....the 2nd one looks more and more fantasy and myth than the first one so fingrs crossed it'll be memorable!!!!!!!

Just watched the traile, there seems to be a big Celtic flavour with Balor and Nuada in it.

Looks awesome, still though, Del Toro should have researched properly into the pronounciation of the Irish name "Nuala"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

dont know much about hellboy the comic as ive only really known about it from afar but if memory serves it does use ALOT of mythic archtypes from all over the world .

the big snake thing in the first one was meant to be crom cruach IIRC so it wouldnt be surprising if the celtic thing is on the level here. in fact im sure i remember some interview where they wanted to draw on the celltic myths but trying to do so in a way so it doesnt look like lord of the rings.

in that light maybe they deliberatly messed up the names ?

Ron Perlman's turn was the only good thing about Hellboy.
They took what was a great wee character and turned it into a cliche comicbook pile of nonsery. It was Captain America bad.

Maybe the sequel will improve but its already burned me for 7 euro 50 and Hellboy 2 is gonna be downloaded for free.

I was just looking at the trailers again this morning. I really can't wait.

Someone mentioned it already, but one of the creature's really looks like the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth.

I wasn't overly impressed with the first Hellboy film but the fantastic trailer got me interested in checking out the second installment.

I got to see it today and I still don't understand the massive appeal of the Hellboy character and the huge plaudits that Perlman seems to get from everbody. However, I doubt Hellboy fans will be dissapointed though, and even I enjoyed it lot more than the first one.

Visually, the film is stunning. Del Toro's imagination really does run wild and this pretty much sets it apart from any comic book movie that's come before it.

As said above, it clearly draws a lot from celtic mythology which becomes more and more explicit as the film progresses.

If anything Hellboy 2 has confirmed to me that The Hobbit is in perfect hands with Del Toro. I'm actually starting to think that Del Toro's vision of the book could out do Jackson's LOTR trilogy.

Don't want to say too much incase I spoil anything!!!

end of august but its out in the US as of this week. Saw it opening night and I'm going to stick comments behind a spoiler just to be safe
It's alright, not great but watchable. I really enjoyed the first one and was looking forward to this and visually its really great, the creature design is fantastic and some of the action shots really interesting but its really let down by the clunky story, weak bad guys, and poor story resolution at the end. I thought Luke Goss looked great as the Prince Nuada and his fight scenes are a highlight but as a character Prince Nuada is a little bland and just not evil enough - his motivation comes arcoss more as a spoiled child more then anything else. The Golden Army itself gets very little screen time which annoyed me cus I wanted to see this massive army in full but we only see bits and then only at the very end. There are so really confusing plot points, like The Angel of Death [really cool design] who just happens to be waiting outside the entrance to the golden army chamber, rabbiting on about Hellboy destroying the world in the distant future and cures Hellboy [who Prince Nuada had stabbed with a magic blade in order to make them come to the chamber and bring him the last part of the crown] and thus removing Nauda's leverage over them so why the hell did they go in after him? He couldn't turn the army on without the piece of the crown they had and Nauda's threat that he would kill his sister falls flat cus we established not 10 mins earlier if he hurts or kills her he will die also. Alot of the plot feels really forced and theres far to much deadspace where characters just sit around and talk about their feelings - if I wanted to watch a film about people bitching about relationships I'd a gone to see sex in the city

Really good, enjoyable film in my opinion. I wasn't overly enamoured with the first Hellboy as i found it a little slow. This one was a lot faster paced and more action packed with some spectacular creatures and nice set pieces.
