Skipping and other exercises to help tone up

    Hi

I'm curious to know what exercises would be best to help tone up?

Is Skipping something that can be picked up easily? And by easy I mean picked up by someone who's co-ordination isn't the best at present.

I have a long term goal of bulking up but first of all I want to simply tone up, lose a little weight (I'm not too overweight really, beerbelly etc) and basically feel better about my body.

What combination of exercises would you guys recommend? Is it simply things like running, swimming that are best or something else?

    Thanks in advance

Best overall toner is swimming ... hands down.

I could add a load of conditioning and GPP exercises - but not sure if that's what you're after.
For general conditioning and fitness - burpees, speed rope, press-ups (different variations), pull ups and hill sprints - will make a beast out of you. But making up a routine is another days work.

An even mix of cardio and resistance training - focusing on lighter weights with higher sets/reps for toning - as a general rule. Others here will know a lot more.

What's your present activity level - do you run, swim, play a sport now?

With speed/skipping rope: co-ordination is something to work on, but it can be done. It's not that hard to pick up if you start slow. I'll find a vid for you on it.

There's that "tone" would again. Seeing as your goal is to look better naked (which, let's face it, 99% of us our after) you don't need to slim down before you bulk up.

Weight bearing exercises will help you best for tone, and by that I mean heavy weights, as they produce the most favourable adaptation the fastest.

Your weight training sessions should include lifts like the deadlift, squat, press, pull ups, dips, push-ups, etc. Here's one beginners workout

Now, for skipping, here's some vids:

Yep, heavy weights and lower your bodyfat. Lifting big weights will not make you huge, it will develop muscle faster than high rep training. I would like to get the build of a swimmer, but I know the easiest way to get like that is not from swimming, it is from a better diet to lower my body fat, and heavy weights to retain my muscle and develop a little new muscle while losing this fat.

Heavy weights should be first on your list, excellent for losing fat and maintaining & developing muscle which leads to a raise in metabolism and hence great for fat loss.
