Hi, I'm 23 5ft 10, 34" Waist, but iv always been a chubby dude. i weigh 13.5 stone, my dad has a similar frame to me but been in the army hes pretty "built"

I'm planning on toning up after Christmas to turn over a new leaf. The plan to get as realistically close to maybe 11st as possible, if not lower. I have very broad shoulders, so personally i don't want to lose too much weight, as i think it may make me look weird....:) Big Frame, like i don't have a big belly just wide.

Any help from anyone recommending diets, work outs.... anything would be really appreciated.

My dad is regular gm head, he recommends alot of cardio and light weights will achieve my goal. Is this the right way to go??

    Thanks alot,:)

Just read all the stickies, loads of stuff in there, then come back with stuff you're not sure of.

Cardio is always good, but unless you are recovering from an injury, I can't help feeling that light weights is a waste of your gym time. Lift intensely. The weights don't have to be huge, but they should be the heaviest you can lift with good form for, say, 12 reps. The point of weight training is to cause progressive overload of your muscles. If what you do is easy, you won't see results.

There are lots of different approaches to diet. Lots of people swear by a 40/40/20 diet, others find that a high fat keto diet is what works for them. In the end, what counts is to make sure you are burning more calories than you are eating. Watch your portion sizes.

Don't wait till New year, try making some changes now, so you'll have less to do in 2008. A very easy trick is that anywhere you'd normally eat a sandwich or roll, you eat the same filling, but on a green salad. And anywhere you'd normally eat pasta, rice or potatoes, you eat the same food, but with a big portion of green vegetables instead. Those two swops won't reduce the amount of food you eat, but can easily trim 500 calories a day off your diet.

Yeah I would agree with Eileen. For the past month or so I have been stuck in the middle of nowhere on a project with no canteen so if I do not bring food with me each day I am forced to buy packaged sandwiches.

After two weeks of these sandwiches I was bored to death and started bringing tins of tuna and sweetcorn to mix for lunch instead. Likewise, in the evenings I leave out the pasta / rice / spuds and just have meat and extra veg.

I don't need to loose weight but have noticed I'm a tad skinner from the above, plus there is no carb crash after lunchtime --> more energy & more alert throughout the day.

Step 1 - train today, no talking/typing about what you are going to do just get your ass moving.

And read the stickies - its all been answered before
