Help!....Lense for Nikon D40x before xmas day

    Hi there.

First of all please excuse my ignorance....I know very little about cameras especially digital SLR ones!

My mum bought a Nikon D40x online for my dad for christmas not realising it was the body only until she received the camera a few days ago without a lense.

I've been onto countless camera shops trying to get the 18-55mm lense which comes with the standard package but none of them seem to sell it seperately. They can order it in but it would cost €300. We paid €559 for the camera body and the package with the lense would have cost €645 so obviously we don't want to have to pay €300 when we could have got it for less than €100.

Can anybody suggest somewhere we could get a lense to fit the D40x for around €100 new or second hand.

    Thanks a million!

Try Adverts.ie some people sell their kit lenses when they buy more lenses. It's a good place to start. You could buy a different lens but for the autofocus to work properly on a D40 you need to get a lens with a motor built into it (as the camera body doesn't have a motor to autofocus lenses).

    Best of luck.

Adverts.ie is also another place to start.

I'd reccommend the 50mm f1.8 as a good cheap lens. I have the Canon equivalent but I use the Nikkor version in work. Its not a zoom but it its a very sharp fast lens.

mind you that the 50 1.8 for nikon won't be autofocus for a d40/d40x
    you need the kit's lens
only buying it from other people in dublin will ensure you'll have it in time
try adverts.ie and gumtree.ie or a localized search on ebay.ie
anyway, you'll be spending just under the 200 mark I'd say (150 if you're lucky), be prepared

ninimac try Birmingham's camera shop on the quays in Dublin or Hall's camera on Talbot street. Both sell the Nikon D40x (mother got my hopes up by bringing home a price (539e with a lens cant remember what size) for it from Birminghams)

Berminghams have a few 2nd hand Nikon lenses on their page http://www.berminghamcameras.ie/store/index.php?target=products&product_id=2274
    Check in the preowned page

I bought this camera with an 18-55 lens in birminghams yesterday for 539!!

Why don't you return the one you bought on line and go with this one instead?

    I think you're talking about the D40

as a past owner of the 18 - 55 i wouldn't buy it , get the 18 -70 much better , and if you can afford it get the 18 -200 VR .

The 18 - 55 is a pretty poor lens IMO
