Injury injections...

    Hi,

I have a rugby match tomorrow that i've been ruled out of by my athletic therapist due to some damage to my rotator cuff in my shoulder. It's a pretty important match and it was suggested to me by the rehab staff that an injection to the injured area might allow me to get through the match.

Anyone ever had any experience with these injections before? I need to get a decision made on it before 3pm so I'd like to get as much info as possible on the subject.

    Thanks in advance.

Give yourself time to heal IMO. There will be more matches. You only have 1 body.

    What he said ^^^^^

I don't agree with this sort of thing from management teams. Remember, their only concern is the points this weekend...

Alot of half-crippled ex-footballers/rugby players etc etc out there who are long forgotten by their respective clubs...

It's pretty common practice if it's a niggling thing, however it's all down to your personal choice and whether or not you feel comfortable doing so. Any lads that I know of who've taken the said injections feel no pain during or after the match.

What about damage to the rehab time? Did their rehab time suffer as a result?

It's not a niggling thing, it's a fairly new injury (one of thousands)...

To be honest yes it does. Even though you cant feel the pain your injury will get slightly worse due to the damage done. Talking only an extra week or so before the need for no more injections, if it's AIL this is the last game before xmas so you'll have more time to rest.

Sensible thing to do is rest, knowing the position your in I'd play however because that's the loyalty I have towards my teammates. Probably not the right thing to do though if it's bad, it's all abou how comfortable you are with playing physically and also on a sub conscious level.

Most people will disagree with what I've said and rightly so but unfortunately I have a whatever it takes mentality.

You have two big obligations: to yourself and to your team.

    1) If you play tomorrow you take the risk of further injury.

    2) If you play tomorrow (numb or not) you will not be at your best and will not be able to play the way your team deserves. There must be a sub for your position.

    3) You owe it to your team to heal up and get back healthy after christmas.

I have a match tomorrow aswell. CAn't wait. Nice weather for it.

Without wishing to get into it, that's not really the issue to me... It's knowing the right thing to do for yourself and your team. I don't think playing on regardless makes you more of a team-player than a fella who's honest and realises than there'll be another day, let someone who can do the job 100 per cent in, and get yourself 100 per cent for the next day.

Sometimes playing with an injury can be a selfish act, rather than a selfless one...

    Ok,

thanks for all the input guys. I guess i'll have to talk this one over with the coach and AT with regards a replacement and my % of fitness. Right now it isn't too good and choosing to play isnt clever. If i did it could jeapordise the squad and be a bit selfish...

Gah! I hate being left out due to injury!

I know it's after your time limit, but if we're talking a cortisone shot then I'd probably avoid it at all costs. Anyone I know who's got it done has just ended up having to get cut open eventually anyway.

If we're talking straight painkiller block then knowing me I'd probably do it.

Seconded. In my capacity as an acupuncturist specializing in sports injures I have seen first hand many people who have ended up in a worse physical state due to cortisone injections that have made actual recovery far harder in the long term, often leading to progressively more invasive and aggresisve treatments that produce less and less satisfactory results.

I suppose it'd depend on the game but if its important and the meds say its ok I'd probably do it.

As regards what Hanley said about cortisone I've had a jab in my elbow and while it still gives me jip from time to time it's never needed surgery, although there's a big difference between an elbow and a shoulder.

If you're doing it, make sure as best you can that its going to work, ie. that its not going to impede your mobility or something like that. I'd hate to do and then let everyone down anyway by being sh1te on the day.

Yarp, I shoulda said that the majority of people I've talked to who've had experience with cortisone were using it for a shoulder issue. In fact one of the guys I'm specifically thinking of had it done last year after injuring his shoulder and he blew it out again very recently, and is probably going under the knife too.

I hadn't even thought of that specifically when I posted but now that I do it further re- enforces my belief.
