Happy with how it is as is.

    My imaginary bridge is better.

Sure why the feck would you pay for an expensive train ticket when ryan air could toss* you that far for much cheaper.

granted they're flights are like cattle moves.

Obviously it would cost huge amounts of money, but good idea on paper. Train from Dublin - London via Wexford in 2.5 hours.

That'd be pretty cool alright. Could very easily go to london shopping for a day (minus the checking in of bags etc in the airport!)

Ahem, technically are we not connected to Britain by land and I'm sure a bridge or two already.

Well, even more technically. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but not Britain, which is just England, Scotland and Wales.

Er, bad idea for soo many reasons. Could stay here all day and debate it, but have exams in a few :( I will return ;)

Thats great if they make it, what about the tides and if ships want to cross the bridge?

Wrong. Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom, not Great Britain.

I would have thought the Irish sea would be too rough for anything like this. It would be great if it can be done and as long as the Tans are building it.

Stupid idea. Think about all the traffic going through Wicklow!

Are you suggesting only people who use St Tropez would be employed, is that not "Paleist" :D

Imagine being able to jump on a train in Dublin and get off in Paris. Now that would be cool.

Is it not called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

By the time the bridge was built, if they started tomorrow, oil prices will be so high (in fact there might be no oil left) that flying for the masses will be something for the history books.

High speed electrified railways are the future for travel.

OP, haven't you seen any zombie movies where they take over vast swathes of the world? The only thing keeping the shambling hordes of flesh eaters away is the fact that there is no land-bridge, and you want to jeopardize this?!?

Seriously, it would be great if it could be done, but I doubt it would be cost effective. Maybe in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,229 ✭✭✭Susannahmia

That would be cool. Would a tunnel not be better though?

Yes it is, which is why you are wrong, we are not connected to the 'Great Britain' part, we are connected to the 'Northern Ireland' part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. See? Great Britain is separate...

Yes it is. You said Ireland is already connected to Britain. It is not. It is connected to the United Kingdom. Notice how they keep Great Britain and Northern Ireland seperate.

I think they should build a shorter one from Northern Ireland to Scotland.

+1 - makes lot more sense seeing as the two are far closer together and woudln't cost our economy anything as would be down to the brits to unite two of their countries!

Personally, my view is we're an island and it should be left that way! Flights far faster/cheaper than any train would cost! And if you dn't like flying, there are ferries :)

I'd like to see both! Bridge/Tunnel going from Scotland to NI, and a tunnel from Wexford to England.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

If it were built between Northern Ireland and Scotland, wouldn't it be really awkward to get from Dublin to London?

Thats not true. If you ever read World War Z, you'd see we'd be f*cked regardless. Mainly because any zombies that had fallen into the sea would be just walking on to the beaches. At least the bridge would get 'em funneled and easier to take the bastards out.

I'm all for the bridge idea.

Is it a joke? The pictures on the link of the trains on O'Connell St, Westminster and in front of the Arc de Triomphe are pretty unrealistic. Surely the trains would be from Connelly to St Pancras, and the Eurostar would be the connection to Paris?

Or maybe it's just meant to be symbolic?

It would be a nice idea if it is real. The Eurostar works out much faster from London to Paris as there is far less security and check-in time, plus the fact that you go from and arrive in a far more central location than the airports.

If a 150 min journey time was possible I'd say it would shave about 2 hours off most Dublin/London journeys. I'm travelling to Dublin on Wednesday and I'll be leaving home at 6.30-ish and I'd say I'll get to my in-laws at around mid-night. On a train Like that it would take about 3 and ahalf hours door to door, it would be nice, and I'd guess easier to bring my dogs.

Pfft! If you had read World War Z carefully You'd know that Ireland was one of the safe zones in the war. They evacuated the pope to here ffs. :D

    It sure would !

Last month I took a train from Paris at 8pm and woke up in Rome at 8am the next morning for €100 return. There's something about flying that prevents me from doing it unless it's all been organised in advance while I'll happily take a train with a few hours notice.

Really? 'Cause I was always wondering what happened to us in that.

We get a small mention. One of the German soldiers being interviewed meets the author when they are visiting the temporary Vatican in Armagh. It's also mentioned that the British royal family were evactuated to Ireland, except for the queen who bravely stayed in Windsor Castle to keep up the moral of her people.

this will never happen. not like the plan layout is anyway. Bridge over water? I don't see it happening. you might get a submerged tunnel/tube to work though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Well, the water is 100m deep at the deepest, which is most definately possible to do.

They could use the Isle of Man as a pier, thus shortening the span. :D

Could we not just dig a tunnel under Britain and come up in France?

I have indeed read World War Z. The amount of zombies that would make it here would be miniscule, as they wouldn't be able to see Ireland at any given point. The only ones that would reach us are ones that were randomly taken here by the tides. It would be easy to have patrols on all the shorelines to take them out.

A far bigger concern would be infected guys fleeing here by plane thinking it would be safe. You'd only need one or two in Dublin for us to be in big trouble, as we have very little capacity for defending ourselves.

They can't stop billions or Euros worth of drugs making it onto our shores what makes you think they'll spot one or two zombies. How could they tell the difference between your average drunkard lost on a beach and a zombie?

Because if you'd read the book you'd know the preservation of safe zones was an international plan and lots of European military were sent here to defend the beaches.

Is there any discussion that can't be improved by zombies?

*IF* it were built, cheaper, quicker and more enviromentally friendly to get to London. Great idea.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭tech77

    Very cool.
All you need then is The Bering Strait Bridge between Russia and Alaska to be able to travel from Ireland to the American Continent by land (train even?).
Or this to travel across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa via land from Ireland.
Handy for nervous flyers i suppose if nothing else:p

would be a cool idea, to arrive in central london in 2 hours from Dublin, but it costs like 15€ one way with Ryanair to London stansted

You also have to pay to get to London from Stansted. That's about £30/ €45 return for the train. Then you have to pay for your London travelcard to get around London on top of that. And you have to get the Aircoach to Dublin Airport. Overall you don't really save that much money flying to outlying airports, especially if it is a late booking. But you do waste a lot of time.

Factor rising fuel costs into the equation and by the time this trainline could be built it will probably be every bit as cheap.

2 hours to London by train? Iarnrod Eireann can barely get to Wexford in that time.

Uhm, a bridge .. yeah .. good idea.
