Why are takeaway pizzas so expensive?

Takeaway pizza has to be the most expensive fast food there is. A medium pizza costs €18 from Dominos when you can buy one in a freezer for about €4. And you can go to mcdonalds or burger king and get a meal for roughly €8?

    Why are they so expensive?

    This drives me nuts.
Dominos are the worst offenders...even though they're tasty.

    It's simple - greed.

    Solution: don't buy from dominos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭masseyno9

Are you trying to make us all hungry? Because you're doing a damn good job of it! Now reheated dinner doesn't seem at all appetising and i'll have to fork out for take-away!
    cheers!

on-topic, basically because they know people will pay for it. Pizza is often cheaper in chippers, not mizzoni's though, cos thats just a pizza place that does chips. Basic bog standard italian-named chippers, you know the type...

Because people pay. (See: Supply -v- Demand)
Because people who are too lazy or stupid to cook their own damn pizza are fools and fools are quite willing to part with money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

The frozen ones are much nicer too.

They're so expensive because they have to pay for the "free" delivery, and I guess because they're "fresh" and made to order.

Dominos and Four Star make horrible pizzas. They taste so cheap and dead.

They're expensive because people will pay it. People will always pay for convenience, especially for something like pizza when people usually only order it when they're feeling too lazy to cook!

Apache is just as expensive, there's a place in Ratoath that does very good pizza (and cheap too).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,635 ✭✭✭tribulus

I don't know if they're still doing it but Tesco receipts often had a "Buy one get one free" coupon on the back of their receipts.

20E for two 16 inch pizzas, saved me lots of money!

    Edit: This was for Apache.

A friend worked for a while in the local pizzeria.
He told me that the ingredients for one 12" pizza cost 60 cent.
The pizza was sold for ~€12.

I would imagine that chains get their ingredients cheaper too.

pizza is more gourmet than your chipper or burger joint in Ireland. Go to Italy, where pizza places are the same as our chippers and you'll get dirt cheap, and good, pizzas. Getting fish and chips on the other hand over there will cost you near an arm and a leg.

The same is true for Mexican food in Ireland, it is ridiculously expensive to buy or eat out in a mexican restaurant, yet in Mexico, this food is considered peasant food.

Look lads the fact that yee can get a take away on any given night without the full hours drive is something i would pay any money for some nights!

In saying that though with so much competition in the city seems insane prices to me.

A medium Dominos starts at €11 (marguerita).

You usually get more and better toppings than frozen (some frozen pizzas are really pathetic) , it's fresh, cooked and delivered.

Anyone ever eat the 75 cent pizzas from tesco?

I swear to god, they have the nicest sauce I've ever tasted on a pizza.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

wow, has it really gotten that expensive  Over here I can get 2 quality medium pizzas and a few beers delivered for €18.

Dragon's Den here I come. The €4 pizza company.

You heard it here first :D

Pizza top (off George's Street) pizzas are nice, but they're damn expensive.

I work in Apache, all costs (including insurance etc.) covered, it may cost a €4 at most to make a 16". And it's cheaper to buy in store than have it delivered. Free delivery, but the delivery menu has higher prices.

Both Domino's and 4-Star do a deal where if you buy 3 or four 9" pizzas, you get them for about 5 or 6 quid each, which is cheaper than a chinese. Also, a medium pizza is plenty enough for one person. You should try a Wagon Wheel.

Also Mizzoni's is better than the lot of them and they're cheaper than them as well. A hefty 9" with an extra topping or 2 is about a tenner, which is about the same as a curry + fried rice + delivery.

I'm looking forward to ordering about €150 worth of pizza, and only paying half price for it, tomorrow. We finish our final (and i mean final...ever :() college exam tomorrow, so we are all going over to my house and to get ****-faced and use the 1/2 price voucher (on any order over €40) we have for Domino's. Good times.

I love pizza, but usually only order if there is a good special. I've found Indian food to be more expensive though.. and Chinese is getting there too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Was just thinking about this earlier. The latest deal from dominos is buy 2 large pizzas get a 3rd one free. That means they must be making enough from the 2 pizzas to cover the extra pizza, delivery, any extras and still make a profit.

Really frustrating cause they are so so delicious, haven't found a frozen pizza that can get close :(

A 12 inch take-away pizza in my local Pizza Hut (Japan) costs 25e. And the toppings are rubbish: potato, corn and seaweed!

    Godfathers Pizza

    9'' Pizza + 4 toppings
1 Bag of chips + dip
    2 cans

    €15

    Absolutely gorgeous.

Dominos and Four Star are shíte in comparison.

Hungry now! Got a Godfather's menu in the letter box tonight (to ad to my ever growing collection) and I had to hide it to stop myself ordering. The midweek special is even better. Same price but you get a 12 inch, any side dish, and 2 cans. Monday to Wednesday but they've given it to me on a Thursday too. Having said that, I made my own pizza tonight and it was cheaper and tasted better.

Actually it is a bit ridiculous considering a frozen pizzas probably the easiest thing to cook on earth. Take off plastic, put in oven, wait for what will probably be the same amount of time it takes for a delivery to come, enjoy delicious pizza and save yourself some money :)

    Frozen pizza is skusting though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 960 ✭✭✭:|

Ah it does the job. Some are gorgeous though, as nice as most take outs, the Dr Oetker one with the spinach is fantastic. God I'm starving

Pizza is over priced in this country and not very good, hence I don't buy it. Maybe once a year or probably less I order a pizza.

Lol, good luck with that. It'd be absolutely impossible.

I love dominos, get it about once a week and have no qualms about the price as I enjoy the food, the delivery is usually nice and quick and I've never had a problem with them.

Have had Godfathers before and wasn't impressed by it.

Supermarket/packaged pizzas are fine but when I'm hungry, having it cooked and delivered with no hassle means more to me than the couple euro.

The nicest pizza in Ireland comes from a small back-street takeout in Duleek run by two Italian brothers.

The make *and* roll their base from fresh. That's the whole trick. All the major chains use frozen dough, even Milano/Pizza Express.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,082 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

Godfathers goes cold too quick, otherwise it's damn nice.

I tend to order from Dominos just because they do the best Garlic & Herb dip known to man.

A meal for three (only really suitable for two and I can eat it on my own) costs €20 and you get any medium pizza, garlic bread and chicken strips.

That's good enough value for me.

Must try that 75c pizza in Dunnes.

What is the nicest of the frozen pizzas? I used to like the goodfellas mighty meaty. Tried cooking my own a few weeks ago and the kitchen was manky after! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Favourite frozen pizza by far is the Chicago Town take away style pizza. The closest any pizza comes to Dominos but only stocked by Superquinns :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 167 ✭✭seanabc

The problem with getting deliveries is my built-in compulsion to tip the delivery person and the way they expect it now. That adds two euro onto something that's already costing me extra, even though the delivery is meant to be free.

I only get Dominos when I'm willing to go to the shop and get the Carry Out Special, or when I have a voucher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭JCDUB

Pizza in Ireland is a total rip-off.

I used to get a "winter special" in Melbourne which consisted of:

12" Pizza with max 5 toppings
    9" garlic bread pizza
    1.25l bottle of coke
    Delivered

All for $11, which is around €7

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,496 ✭✭✭Mr. Presentable

You are paying the wages, insurance, rent etc for the periods when the shop is quiet also. Yes the margins are high, but they need to be. I have worked as manager in a couple of these places and can assure you they need to be very busy and tightly run to make decent money.

Rent: A coffee shop at the new centre beside the square closed recently. The rent was, are you sitting down?, €48,000 per annum!

I wonder what the rent is for Four Star in Ballsbridge, Domino in the Square.

Wages: People have to be paid even when there are no customers.

Ingredients: Even wholesale, cheese is a savage price. Check out what it costs for a bag of Mozarella in Tesco

Utilities: Ovens are always on - even when not baking.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 81 ✭✭colliegG

    Pinheads Pizza is savage.

12" pizza, 2 cans coke, chips and garlic bread for €20. Lovely pizza too.

imo Dr Oetger is the best frozen pizza.

No. It's the tesco 75 cent one you want.

    Students, take note.
This is probably the nicest thing you will get on the little money you have.

Big fan of tesco's double-pepperoni pizza. But I reckon the best pizza in Dublin is in Independent Pizza Co. in drumcondra. They dont deliver, but its worth driving down to collect one. Their Smokey Joe's pizza is the stuff of the gods!

    Might do tonight.

Lovely pizza! I like Papa Johns too.

Bought a medium pizza (cheese/ham) there for €14, that would get me a extra large pizza in Sweden. We're talking family size! Fecking rip off!
