Not sure what to make of this (I bet you can guess which country it happened in before ready the article!):

    Sky News
A five-year-old boy has killed a 445lb black bear in a forest in Arkansas.
Tre Merritt was in a hunting stand half way up a tree with his grandfather Mike waiting for deer.

Tre told local TV station KATV: "I was up in the stand and I seen the bear.

"It came from the thicket and it was beside the road and I shot it."

His grandfather said he had whistled at the animal when it was 40 to 50 yards away, at which point it stood still.

He then told Tre to shoot it.

Mr Merritt added: "I said 'Tre, you missed the bear'. He said 'Paw-paw, I squeezed the trigger and I didn't close my eyes. I killed him."

The bear weighed 445lb, meaning it was 12 times the size of Tre. The family now plans to have it mounted.

Mr Merritt said that Tre was descended from famous American frontiersman Davy Crockett, who died at the Alamo in 1836.

He said: "Davy supposedly killed a bear when he was three. Tre is five and really killed a bear.

"I really doubt if Davy killed one when he was three."

Tre started shooting when he was two-and-a-half years old and last year shot three deer.

Nice to see a positive gun-related story coming from America, boy kills one of natures most beautiful creatures for sport. Brilliant.

He didn't use his bear hands? That's silly.

wow, some of you people will complain about anything.

445lbs is quite small for a bear is it not?

That's like saying ''5 year old kills 14lb man in hand to hand combat''.

    Ah, good old Davy Crockett.
So a kid shoots a bear, that wasn't doing any harm. How is that an achievement?

I would have thought the bullet killed the bear. Any fool can shoot a gun.

Its early days yet, but the bear may have been a terrorist.

So you've just stuffed and mounted a 445lb bear. Then what? Do you put it in the hall as a coat stand? Perhaps hang vegetables on it in the kitchen?

What's the point of giving the size of the bear? It would be different if he wrestled it and eventually squeezed the lift out of the bear.

A 5 year old child is a better shot than the entire American 'friendly fire' army.

    What a country.

There is a difference between breeding and killing an animal to eat it and going out into a forest to kill a wild animal for fun. I love to see matadors getting injured by the bull for example and I'm delighted that the American Footballer recently got jail time for running a dog fighting ring. You have to be a pretty warped human being to get your jollies from inflicting pain on an animal.

Did he masturbate during the dogfighting or something?

me too, it's only fair. Imo the bleeding of the bulls is the worst part of that tradition, if it was a prime healthy bull V one wiry european/mexican.. *that* would be a sport.

The average black bear weight, along with a photo of the animal can be found on conservation sites. Most wild animals of this species reach from 125 to 500 pounds, while females may be from 90 to 300 pounds. It depends upon the age of the animal, the season of the year, and how much food is available. The average black bear weight, along with a photo of the animal can be found on conservation sites.

So, this kid whistled for it to come over and then shot it? I mean, it wasn't doing anybody any harm

I believe the bear may have had a small vial containing a weapon of mass destruction in his backpack !

Am I the only one who thinks it was strange to leave a five year old with a gun?

It would be crazy not to leave a five year old have a gun. I mean there are bears out there. :p

They should send that kid over to Iraq to kill the terrorists.

Yes. I think we should do the same in Ethiopia.
For their own good of course.

Guns really are the great equalizer, allowing pussies to hide in trees and shot things.

Take on a bear with a pair of fake claws and see what you get you dirty yankee cnuts.

people, there are plenty of good and valid reasons to hate americans.

this isn't one of them. Hunting for sport, or breeding for food.. we all slaughter animals. If it bothers you this much, turn veggie. Then die.

Sorry Mordi, it's not that simple when your me!

Now don't get me wrong, more animals die to feed me per week than any other boardsie i'm guessing but i just can't bring myself to eat or kill another predator. They are just too damn cute.

Bears, sharks, tigers, lions....anything that can run you down and rip your throat out deserves my respect and admiration!

Besides, Veggies all have severe Vaginitis.

    FACT! :D

I second this. Similarly I would allow fox hunting if they didn't have the luxury of dogs and horses. Let them run after the fox themselves and see how far they get.

It's not the killing of the bear I object to. I have never met this bear, I don't care about this bear, but sitting in a cabin with a rifle waiting for some unsuspecting animal to pass is no more a sport than punching small kids on your way down the street is a sport. Then when you hear the macho attitude these **** associate with it you'll have to admit it's a perfectly good reason to hate Americans!

+1 If there's nothing wrong with raising animals in appalling conditions (ie, battery farm chickens) and then killing them en masse for food, then I really don't see what's that much worse about killing an animal for sport.

That's a bit primitive is it not. We have the intellect(though not this plank from Arkansas I'd imagine) to build weapons which is more deserving of respect and admiration than having big teeth or muscles.

I'm a primitive kind of guy. In my experience, when you strip away the weapons from any human all your are left with is a pussy.

Now, those willing to fight with fists and feet?

    Warriors all.

Well I'd say a willingness to fight is a poor test for courage but each to their own.

that's the point dragan, we are incredibly weak animals with poor stamina and ****ty speed. But we have amazing brains. They are our claws, teeth, abnormally stretchy leg muscles.. through them we designed rocks on sticks, then sharp metal on sticks, now dull metal exploded down a long barrel. It's all a continuation of the same theme. To ask us to stop is like asking wolves or lions to stop ganging up on that one weak gazelle and be more 'fair' about the whole thing.
but sitting in a cabin with a rifle waiting for some unsuspecting animal to pass is no more a sport than punching small kids on your way down the street is a sport.

And penning animals into cages for every day of their natural life, allowing them next to no freedom and pumping them with all kinds of unnatural chemicals to artificially increase productivity is.. .. what?

    Guns? Knives? Pussies i say!!!

Excellent points all, but i would counter argue that the over dependance on developed technology is what has weakened us. Vicious cycle one might say.

The way they hunt these bears is they bait an area with food.
Usually for a few weeks especially in autumn when bears are hungry.
Bear gets used to free food thinks great then has apiece of hot lead shattering through its body at huge speed.
They also hunt with dogs bear thinks great if i go up this big tree ill be fine
when he is a sitting target.
Rednecks should all be shot no matter what place there from mayo alabamba etc.

that sport is their tradition proberly going back god knows how may centuries

same as fox hunting in Ireland

btw in Ireland the fox would be stabbed before hand :D:D
