    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a81395/channel-4-launches-hd-channel.html

A high definition simulcast of Channel 4 has launched on Sky.

Channel 4 HD is available on channel 140 and will show high definition versions of the channel's programming where available. At launch, this includes Ugly Betty, "classic and contemporary movies", and music events including The Scissor Sisters and Keane live in concert. The first non-upscaled programme to go out today in high definition will be Happy Gilmore, the 1996 film starring Adam Sandler, at 10pm.

anyone know if this is available under "other channels"?

Gettin Sky HD box soon, got a couple of questions.
Is BBC HD available in Ireland? Same question about C4 HD.

BBC HD is, yeah - it runs from about 8pm every night, and runs a "Demo" loop during the day.

It is some where on the 'Add Channels' section, and even if it was, will that, 'Channel is Unavailable' message be there.

We can not that symbol rate of 29.5, they are only 22.0 and 27.5

    Exactly.
Conflicting responses from Sky , who said it will be here , and C4 who said it wont

Is it possible for broadcast HD as it is now to be as good as HD-DVD or Bluray? Huge amounts of bandwidth would be required. Some programmes and movies will be HD on Channel 4 HD. Most will be upscaled. For now that is. I have no doubt that there will be an increase in HD programming as time goes on.

It's not quite HD-dvd or Blu-Ray , but it is definately the best HD channel on sky.

So is it on the Irish EPG or not?

And if not does anyone know the tuning details for other channels. Presumably it has changed symbol rate now that it is available on boxes in the UK.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

It is the same symbol rate. All the Sky HD channels have that symbol rate also.

M'kay! Thanks for that info. Collecting my shiney new HD box this evening and will be tuning in CH4 HD straight after I tune in BBC HD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭MRPRO03

Well, it seems that we can not get it until it was to go on the EPG.

I thought BBC HD was supposed to extend it's hours and run for 9 hours a day? It's only on for 4 today, it seems like a shocking waste to have a constant loop for 20 hours of the day and then 4 hours of repeated programming in HD. Surely they could repeat some of their programmes in the morning or afternoon to actually give people something to watch. Where are the nature documentaries and such they filmed? Why aren't they being shown instead of the demo loop?

And I'm surprised that the first thing Channel 4 HD is going to show in proper HD is a crap Adam Sandler film from 1996. (I say crap as if all his other films are gold or something, which they aren't, but I digress!).

If it is a Sky HD box you wont be able to tune in Channel 4 HD. I am sure a FTV card will get it on the EPG though :)

This is a big disappointment if it doesn't join the ROI EPG.

Come on sky and pull the finger out and secure this!

    Hi all,

what is the story on receiving Channel 4 on a Sky HD box in Ireland? Can we add it as an extra channel and does anyone have the frequency details?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

It is not possible to add Ch4 HD to other channels as it uses a symbol rate of 29500. All Sky boxes only allow you to add channels with rates of 22000 or 27500.

If you have a FTV card you can put that in the box and Ch4 HD will be available on channel 140.

Really don't like dragging up old threads but...

    Is the above still correct?

Can I still not get CH4 HD on my Irish HD box?

Anyone know the current situation with this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,002 ✭✭✭IrishHomer

From my experience its only possible in ROI with a UK freeview from Sky card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,038 ✭✭✭slegs

Yes, only possible with a UK FTV card.

Not until it becomes FTA (and added to the Freesat EPG if you want it under the Freesat EPG) - currently you need a Sky box and a subscription to get it.

    From astra2d.com:
Channel 4 HD has no plans to join Freesat at this stage, due to contractrual obligation with Sky. Expect this channel sometime in 2009.

aww I though this thread would be a new channel from channel 4.

I think E4 HD has plenty of content to go live, e.g my favorite show Skins!!
Film 4HD would be great also.

Really? I've had Sky HD for 2 years and never seen it before, although they do say that the Anytime stuff can be quite random at times...

It doesn't actually take up space, as 140GB of your drive is 'Reserved' for Anytime TV, even if you have exercised the option to turn Anytime TV off!!

Excuse my ignorance but is it still the case that Channel 4 HD and ITV HD are unavailable on Sky HD in Ireland?

Also I assume its not possible to record 'other channels' (e.g. Channel 4 and BBC HD) which dont show up on the EPG?

I got Sky HD installed yesterday and I'm curious as to what I can and cant view/record!

    Thanks,
    Dave

Sky+HD boxes with the new EPG software (Some boxes have it, soon coming to all of them) are able now to recieve ITV HD via other channels.

Channel 4 HD is unavailable with a ROI sub and it can't be tuned into other channels.

And, indeed it is not possible to record from other channels.

    Thanks for the update celticfc.

Do you know how I check which version of the EPG is on my Sky HD box? Also is it possible to software upgrade a box as opposed to replacing the whole unit?

    To check EPG version,

Press Services, then 4 System Setup; then 5 System Details.

If you dont know if you have the latest version of EPG, believe me, you do not have it. You will know when you have it. Its a completely new look epg. Taking some getting used to after being able to work old epg with eyes closed......

This is what it looks like:

Apologies for the bump but has there been any change to Channel 4 HD here? Can we get it yet?

I found this tuning freq. in the stickied thread:
    CHANNEL 4 HD 11.798 H 29500 3/4

    Does that work?
