Going to book one of these for the craic... Where would you go and why? I'm thinking of going to Ballina because i've never been there. (Live in Galway so no point in going there!)

Hmm now to google things to do in Ballina

No doubt about it you could have cheap breaks if your flexible . its also very satisfying to see them charge up to €179 for the rooms on other nights...!!

Im thinking of booking my sister and her husband in for a Sunday and Monday night....some Christmas present...2 nights in a hotel! (for €28 !!)

    h

Bunratty Castle, the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and the Ailwee Caves are all close enough by.

the hotel in waterford is in the city centre, nice hotel and a 5 minute walk from the main shopping area and a 6-8 min walk from the nightlife, for anyone that knows waterford city, when you come across the bridge in waterford go straight ahead and the hotel is on the right.

Thanks for the link. Anyone else stayed in hotels using these guys?

Booked a night in the Ballina hotel for a night in January, comes to a total of €11.95 ... Seems like an absolute bargain to me. I didn't bother buying a meal - if the resturant looks impressive i'll eat in it, otherwise i'll go to a resturant in the area.

Thanks for the link OP - Definately a bargain!

Myself and the bf stayed in Patrick Punch's in Limerick and the Clybaun in Galway.

Very happy with Punch's - lovely new rooms, nice breakfast (not included in price). Didn't have any other meals there. Character of a barman, pure joker. Near Cresent shopping centre. Thumbs up.

Clybaun - disappointed with room tbh. Probably because I asked for non-smoking and it reeked of smoke. When I turned on the shower the smell of smoke just 'rose' from the shower curtain -yuck. Didn't bother complaining about smoking room cos at e19 I would have been embarassed to! Breakfast was ok (not included in price). Lovely bar food, nicely presented. Thumbs half way between up and down.

Don't suppose anyones stayed in Ballina?

TBH I won't be complaining unless there's rats in the room and the shower doesnt work. At 9euro for a double room, sure ya wouldnt get a hostel for that

I've stayed in Patrick Punch's twice and it was great. Everything is very new and clean. Going to Limerick early Jan and booked again. I got the €19 deal and felt very pleased with myself that others in the hotel might have paid the full whack. Until I saw the €9 deal a week later. I was robbed!!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I've had the misfortune to stay in that hotel in Ballina on more than one occasion. Despite the job picking up the tab, I book myself into a B&B when I'm down there nowadays. I could give you a litany of reasons to steer clear of it.

Oh lord please tell me, I might be able to change the hotel and go somewhere else. Don't want to bring the GF to a dump (Oh the irony, paying 9euro for a hotel room eh)

    Re: hotel in Ballina.
Have never stayed in it but am from the area. The hotel is fairly new and in the centre of the town on the banks of the river. the bar is nice and I would imagine the rooms are perfectly fine. I can't comment on staff/service etc. One thing to note is that a night club has opened in the hotel in the last couple of weeks. Not sure if it is open on Sunday nights though.

    Hi Jim,
Thats the impression I got from the pics alright. For 9euro i'm not gonna complain (even if the staff were bull thick tbh) so long as the place is warm and clean.

Since you're from Ballina can you recommend any nice resturants around the area? Don't want to eat in the hotel, I like a change of scenery.

Wouldn't mind if the club was open on a Sunday - excuse to go on the p1ss :D

    Restaurants in Ballina:
Would reccommend Dillons (walk along river from hotel, then left, back towards town, at next bridge. On RHS, under arch. This place has a good bar food menu as well if you are eating before 9ish.
    Indian: Prince on Garden Street
Golf Club: A short drive out of town but nice food too.

If not raining, a walk on Enniscrone beach is nice.

I'm gonna go for an Indian I reckon, thanks for the tip. I reckon i'll spend most of the evening floating in the 'pool' - I'm gonna be hungover that day I know for a fact

    Excellent Choice Sir!
Was there on Sat night. Can I recommend the Shaslik Kebab as a starter or main;)

Thanks for the link! I didnt get any rooms for €9, but got a twin room for €59 for Sat week in waterford.. Considering its near xmas and most BB's charge approx at least €35pp, I'm pleased to be able to stay in a hotel with a late bar for a change!!

For the life of me I cant find Garden Street in Ballina, for the Indian resturant...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭am i bovvered

If you are really into indian food you should go to Jordans in Ballina, it is a old style pub with a restaurant across from the train station,it does not look like it would have great Indian food but trust me, I have eaten Indian all over and the lamb madras is the best i have ever had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭Old Jim

From Google Maps, Garden St. is the street between Tone St. and Teeling St. The hotel is at the junction of Tolan St. and Barrett St. This Indian is a couple of mins walk from the hotel. Jordans is also good and do a mix of food types but is a ~10-15min walk away across from the train station.

Pub gets busy on the weekend, its a favourite spot for locals of the area. The leisure centre is nice in there

It's a taxi drive to town alright, shouldnt cost more than 10-12euro though

Cheers lads, Ill have the car with me along with a new found repulsion for alcohol at that stage of january so should be grand. Doesnt quite live up to going skiing in italy like last year but it will keep herself happy.

    Cheers again op.

Just back from my night in the Ballina hotel.

No real complaints. The 'leisure centre' leaves a lot to be desired, the pool is basicly the same size as a big plunge pool. It has a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna though. Rooms were clean enough. The place was dead quiet which I was happy with, I just wanted to chill out and do nothing!

    Conclusion:
Would I go back for €9 a night? Absolutily yes!
Would I go back for normal rates? Not a hope in hell

Stayed there for one night just after New Year and was very happy. Big comfy and clean rooms - access to leisure centre was included (my sister stayed there pre New Years for €9 and the two of them had access to the leisure centre for that - sure it would have cost more just to go to the leisure centre). Bar food was nice and they had a nice looking early bird menu in the restaurant which we didn't get to try. All told I was very happy with it for the price we paid. Location wise it was a 10-15 min walk to the centre - on the road in from the crescent shopping centre so quite well located.

Steer clear of the Two Mile Inn though - it's like faulty towers, thats not an lie. Have stayed there on 3 occasions (all last minute!) and it's not pretty. Very old styled and the rooms are too.

stayed in the ennis hotel before xmas, the room was poor, the headboard rattled everytime I moved in the bed, it was very basic, the tv remote didnt work, the paint was peeling. It was handy for the €50 i paid for 2 nights however like the poster quoted i wouldnt go back for normal rates

Stayed in Patrick Punches on Saturday night. Couldn't fault it for the money. Huge room, free underground parking, lovely clean pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi. Excellent location close to the city, lovely food in the restaurant. If I was staying in Limerick again, I'd most likely go back to the hotel even paying full price.
