Gaming on 3g broadband isn't really that good an idea. The pings are rubbish. It may be good for slower paced games but for anything fast like a fps it would be painful.

Well here is the link to it. http://www.vodafone.ie/broadband/;jsessionid=EAF880483A7B71831A8B9C20755FC742
not sure if it is any goodfor online gaming or even compatible with ps3. Check and see what you think.

I have the PS3 on voda 3g, using the Linksys router via wireless.

Disconnects a few times but is fine on the playstation store for downloads etc.

As regards gaming, I've played Colin McRae DiRT online no problem, but thats only really rally timings with other drivers.

I haven't had any luck with COD4 yet, it keeps hanging on "Locating Servers" but I believe this is a more widespread problem and might not be the 3G.
However, I doubt that COD4 would be good, the pings would be too high.

i was investigating the same thing myself recently as vodafone is my only option. i got no positive feedback so gave up on the idea.

so if dirt works fine online, then games like tiger woods would also work fine online, but any game such as a fps or pro evo etc wouldn't?

it might be worth getting if this is the case as something is better than nothing and you vodafone is supposed to be fine for browsing the net isnt it?

would appreciate someone with vodafone to confirm!! cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭Patrickof

I'd imagine that Tiger Woods would work fine.

It's OK for browsing, Saturday mornings are usually a bad time.

If you've a PC and get the USB modem then you'll need to enable connection sharing on the PC and have the PC switched on when using the PS3 online.

Damn. The two games I am planniN to get with it are Call of Duty and Prov Evo. Was also considering getting Warhawk as a download. But if none of these work with 3G...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

actually Patrickof, isn't vodafone a 5gig download limit? how do you get on with this for the ps3? does this allow you to play online and do regular browsing on your pc? obviosuly you wouldn't be downloading films but can you survive on 5gb comfortably for just gaming and email/surfing etc?

the new pro evo is supposed to be a disaster online anyway though COD4 is supposed to be brilliant (or so i heard anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭Patrickof

The 5Gb isn't a problem for surfing/emailing and gaming. It only becomes an issue when you start to download the demos from the Playstation store. For example the Uncharted demo is 1.2Gigs. Most are in the range 500M to 1.x Gigs so you're limited to only a few per month.

Although, its quicker and easier to grab a PS3 magazine that has most of the downloads on the cover disc. Still costs about €8 per month for that though.

I don't surf/email on the PS3 - the PC beats it for that hands down.

ill be going back to the parents house for christmas and they have vodafone bb .
So you plug the modem into a usb port on the laptop and connect to the 360 via ethernet port on the laptop?
Do you have to run any programs on the laptop to get it to work?

tried to get this after work but only had one form of ID with me, have to call back tomorrow with two forms.

Just thinking though, how does the ps3 pick up the connection from laptop, do you need to have a wireless router also? or is the usb modem vodafone provide a wireless router in itself?

or would the network cable provided with the ps3 into the laptop work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 134 ✭✭conjamuk

Make sure the Vodafone modem is connected to your computer then get the Ethernet cable that came with the ps3 and connect that to the laptop or PC which ever you have then setup internet connection sharing just go to properties and click allow other to connect through this computer.

sweet, hopefully i'll be sorted this evening so. thanks for all the info.

So i can play games surf websites whatever as long as I want except for downloading? What about that plug in modem from the link on an earleir post. Will that work as well as a router would?

right i picked this up today (on it now)

can't seem to get the ps3 to connect. i enabled the internet connection sharing. i've tried internet connection test on the ps3 but it keeps failing TO OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS

any ideas? do i have yo go into settings for internet connetion sharing and check ALL the boxes or should enablingit be enough?

i've also restarted computer by the way.

another question on the vodafone itself. in the vodafone window when conncted under signal... sometimes it says 3g and other times it says hsdpa. why is thism should it say one or the other the whole time?

I have the 3 wireless broadband since october, I bought a Bellkin wireless router to connect it to my PS3. I then had the great idea of buying WarHawk. I have tried playing it a few times but the connection is never good enough to let it run smoothly. However I play Socom Combined Assault all the time, it runs fine.:D

forgot to mention i have comodo firewall installed. would this be blocking the ps3?

    can anyone help with this?

my internet is working fine at the moment and i've the firewall turned off too just in case, i;ve internet sharing enabled etc but ps3 cannot obtain ip address. it's set to automatically detect one, is this right yeah?

    any ideas???

    Superweld what's your setup?
3g modem, laptop, ps3 and what else?
Are you using a router/switch/hub to connect the ps3 to the laptop or are you connecting straight into the laptop network port?
If you are connecting direct into the laptop port I'm pretty sure you'll need to use a crossover network cable instead of a straight through cable.

Once that's done you can try setting a static IP for the PS3.
First check what your local IP is for your laptop. probably like 192.168.0.1 or something if you enabled ICS.
You can set your static IP on the PS3 to:
    IP: 192.168.0.2
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1 (laptop IP Address)
can't remember if it asked for a DNS but if it does try 192.168.0.1 (laptop IP Address) as well

vodafone 3g with cable that came with ps3 going straight into laptop.

maybe you're right on the cable atually, the one that came with the ps3 is only a patch cable that will only work with a router/hub?

i'll try and mess around with the ip settings as you suggested and see if i have any luck,

    thanks for that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

right i got my ip address from command and added one to last column and put this in the ps3 and went through the other steps. it asked for a primary and secondary dns also so i entered the laptops ip for both then did the test. ip address was obtained now but internet failed with message that it was a dns error.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭Vorrtexx

I would say it's a case where you would need crossover cable if you are connecting direct to the laptop, at least that's how I was only ever able to connect to machines directly together without a hub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭KoA-Ollie

Can anyone confirm that Warhawk and COD4 work with the Vodafone 3G i showed from the link on an earlier post. Will it work just as good with the plug-in as it would with a router?

If you have comodo enabled you might want to look at this near the end of the thread

    https://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3/getting_internet_connection_sharing_to_work_with_comodo-t16610.0.html

right. just got an eircom neotopia router for a while. have laptop plugged in. ps3 plugged in. did the wired connection setup selecting auto for everything. ip address : succeeded but internet failed with dns error 80710102

dont have the wep with me to try the wireless but surely it should work wired??

i have internet sharing enabled on the vodafone connection in network and sharing,

i actually feel like breaking the lot!

have comodo turned off at the moment too, just to eliminate that.

try going with static IP's again. if the router has dhcp running it might be giving the ps3 and IP address of something like 192.168.1.16 and the laptop is 192.168.0.1 so they won't be able to see each other. also the router won't know what gateway IP to give to the PS3 as well which should be the laptop

if i go into ipconfig on laptop i'm getting ip address of 78....not 192.... is this wrong?

that's probably your inernet ip from the 3g modem
maybe try doing an ipconfig /all

yeah you're right, problem is it gives me loads of ip's and gateways, dns and so on...

i've tried em all in different combinations, most of the time the ps3 obtains ip but always fails on internet. wish i knew what the one problem was. there's a lot of combinations so i dunno at this stage. think i'll give up before i go crazy!

    thanks for your help!

i haven't played a game all weekend, spent all my free time entering random combinations. gahhhhhhh

*** i now have it through a unex nexhub. still no idea what to do. do you need to go to college to be able to do this or something?!

i am going to buy a crossover cable at lunch time to connect direct to laptop and try this later in the hope that i can get my ps3 online, unless anyone thinks that i don't need one and teh eircom router/hub should have worked?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭Patrickof

Try it with the crossover. Using the router adds an extra layer of complexity as in normal circumstances the router would have the broadband link connected directly to it, whereas in your case the router has to send traffic back to the laptop to get to the internet.

You could use a cheap ethernet hub rather than the router to get arounc the crossover cable issue - probably better in the long run to do this as it gives you a few more ports to use.

i picked up a crossover cable so i will try that later.

i already have an ethenet hub, a nexhub 8port, but it didnt work either unfortunately.

fingers crossed with the crossover so...

sorry to be bugging everyone with this.....

i have connection through crossover cable now. i've set the ps3 an ip address and can ping it sucessfully from command prompt.

i have the default router and primary dns set as my laptops ip

i have toggled between laptop ip address and all zeros for secondary dns.

can anyone shed some light on this for one very frustrated person.

    thanks.

ya will have to get the primary and secondary dns off voda and just try detect settings automatically on the ps3

just rang vodafone there and the guy didn't really know but he gave me two dns addresses to 'try' so i'll give them a go later.

i't jsut i had read somewhere on my googling that the dns address on ps3 was to be same as laptop ip but obviously that didn't work.

cheers for you help guil07 ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

no it just wont connect. i tried the dns the vodafone guy said.

my biggest problem is that i dont really know where the problem is, if it was just the dns i could have gone through every possible one in the time ive spent on this but the problem could be anywhere.

ics is turned on on the vodafone connection in the network and sharing centre and not on the local network yeah? + all three boxes are checked in the sharing not just the one.

the other network that shows up in network and sharing says it's an unidentified network, a public network with limited connectivity. ive changed this to private but it always changes back to public whenever i do anything on the ps3.

it is always trying to identifying network too anytime i change things on the ps3.

the ip address on local ethernet adaptor is not 192.169.0.1 at the moment. it was at one stage last night when i was fiddling with settings, but then i had ICS enable on this other connection not on the vodafone one.

surely there is someone out there using vodafone for teh ps3 as last week before i got this there were several people commenting on it and a certain few saying that the games worked ok too!!

i've googled this loads, there are so many different bit of info out there and most contradict each other.

Maybe you've already tried following some guides but try this

Sorry, I've only set up ICS on 2000 and XP machines so I imagine the setup/security in Vista would be the different.

Here's an ICS guide for Vista and the Xbox

It should be the same for the PS3. It mentions using Automatically Obtain IP/DNS on the PS3 side also

yeah done all that. ICS is on though as far as i can tell. the problem seems to be with the local connection between laptop and ps3.

only saw this post a few mins ago

yeha i've gone through that. i'm sure my ICS is fine now. the ip is correct again and is 192.168.0.1

went through automatic everything but still a dns error.
tried setting manual ip to 192.168.0.2 with sub of 255.255.255.0 and default router as 192.168.0.1 and dns same as default router. no dhcp no proxy or anything like that and dns error also.

one thing i'm aware of is the local network between says public network access local only. is this ok?

once the ICS is enabled most of the other settings should be similiar to any other OS

i feel i am a bit closer now though as at least i have narrowed it down that my laptop settings are at least not totally wrong!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

can ya not try getting up ur connection info for the voda card. if i type in 192.168.1.254 into ie i get my ip address and dns, primary and secondary. if ya can find that just copy everything and give the ps3 an ip of .20 at the end and it should work
