Your biggest waste of money?

Any good stories about just wasting money on something and never using it? The worst I have is a Christmas present between my bro and I a few years ago, it was some software and card for the pc to do video editing. Cost maybe £200 at the time and I don't think we ever used it! As with all software and hardware this old, it's now probably worth about 80 cent.

My friend is pretty bad, he spent about 3K between a car, insurance and tax etc last year and just hasn't bothered to learn how to drive. It's been sitting outside for a year. It's not that he doesn't have time either, he's just not bothered. He's also spent €150 on a remote control car, used twice. €150 on an mp3 player, never used. €500 on a laptop, there was a MINOR problem that could have been fixed or returned which would have taken a few hours, he never bothered and he never used it, it's now worth about €50 because this was years ago! He also spent about €100 on a set of multimedia speakers for the pc, he didn't know how to set them up (and no he didn't try) so he asked me about 2 years after he bought them, took me about 2 mins to set up without using any manual. He's using them now and loves them:rolleyes:

Edit: The same friend just told me he also bought a chess board for €500, there was something wrong with it when he got delivery of it, so he sent it back, got it back and still something wrong with it, so he got it back now and it said it was serviced and everything on the package, but it's still in the package! He never checked it again, so it's still unused. This is about 2 years ago at this stage now.

Wow! Your friend sounds like an ass. Talk about more money than sense.

Oh, as far as wastes of money, I don't think I really have anything big, just maybe the odd CD that I regretted buying.

Always picking up Greatest Hits compilations because I like one or two of the artist's songs and they end up being used as coasters. Methinks I need an iPod for Chrimbo.

Also fast cars, loose women and slow horses.

I saved up & spent 500 pounds when I was about 14, going on 15 (long time saving) on a nitro racing car. Spent a few weeks putting it together, up to racing spec. Drove it twice, it's in the attic now I think...

I bought a set of tabla (Indian hand drums) for around 250 euros, tried to learn to play them but found it impossible :( They do look cool though.

My girlfriend got a car for her 21st (02 peugeot 206) it cost about 9k i think. She NEVER EVER EVER uses it. EVER! It's so fúcking annoying because she lives on the opposite side of the city and could come over to mine so easily. Instead I cycle over to hers all the time. She's had it nearly 6 months now.

    biggest waste of cash ever.

My iPod. Got the mini one a few years back for about 185 euro, which at the time was an absolute bargin. (there was a deal in a shop and it was a hell of a lot cheaper than everywhere else.) I remember going in with my wads of cash (I was paid straight from the til at work) and being so excited that I was getting one. I got a few months use out of it and then I got sick of it. After awhile I decided to put my own music on it (I had previously just downloaded what my boyfriend had on his) but I got bored very quickly and gave up. Now it wont even turn on, except when I put it in the speakers thing, which I don't!

I spent €150 on a apir of jeans that I thought I liked, when I got home I realised I'm not a jeans person. Also I bought a nintendo ds for €200 over the summer, I played it for 2 weeks before getting bored of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

I spent about 70 quid on a pair of worn jeans (which I despise now), and only when I got home I realised part of the worn 'look' was that the ****ing back pockets were ripped off.
    Annoying.

Prob the car. I do get a bit of use to it in situations where there's no public transport or it's too dodgy to use the bike, but overall between servicing it and mending it and filling it with petrol and ruining the planet and having a tool of a psychobeeyach crash into me recently and paying for parking and cleaning out all my junk from it and circling car parks looking for a space it can be a right pain in the hole and a waste of money sometimes.

Technically my biggest ever waste of money was €2800 on a course in Portobello college. From a material point of view it would have to be buying a second PS2 simply because I wanted to play import games and wasn't sure if it would ruin the console.

Gym membership followed by going out for lunch every day - we spend an average of €25 a day on lunch between us, technically it is not a waste as we are getting fed, it just FEELS like it is a waste. In terms of the gym membership, we have used it about twice (do not have the energy for the gym as recovering from cancer still).

    I bought a car for €1,100 in April 2004.

I spent approx €18,400 adding modifications to it, finishing in August 2004.

I wrote the car off in November 2004.

    RIP.

I also spent the guts of €3200 on importing CD players, a mixer and flight case as I was DJing at the time. The equipment was 100% top class gear, but was to heavy and akward to carry around to gig with. So it sat at home for 2 years, till I sold the lot for €1400, having been used approx 10 or 11 times.

Oh and drink, I must have spend thousands on this hobby. But it is providing a healthy return. I can now balance a can on my belly whilst sitting on the sofa. Nice.

Years ago, I spent £350 on a steam cleaner. The ads said it could clean cars, ovens, tile grouting, the insides of radiators - basically it seemed too good to be true and it was! The steam came out of a tiny nozzle and it would take hours to clean an oven - you'd need the patience of a saint. Mr. Muscle does the job better, an old toothbrush and bleach cleans tile grouting. I still haven't figured out how you get to clean the awkward bits inside radiators, but the steam cleaner won't do it. I used it about 10 times, then brought it to the recycling yard!

Bah, my first car. Spent about 3k 'modding' it, of course lost every penny when it came to selling it. Lesson learned, I not drive a bog standard factory (high factory spec though but i let the first owner take the hit :)) diesel hog. Don't know if it was a total waste though, learned a good bit about filling/spraying car bits and changing suspension components, brake upgrades etc.

An expensive lesson, I Guess, and i did love the car ;)

Every night out in Dublin in the last 5 years has been a giant waste of money.
Insurance on motorcycles was a rip off back when Norwich Union had the monopoly.
Noise cancelling earphones that don't work.

Don't get me started on the governments cut of every euro that sees the light of day.

add it to the value of the car.

i spent 2,400 on my laptop. seriously cant find anything to do with it anymore as i build a new gaming rig. :(
its still cool to have, but i could have used something a whole lot less in cost for the same thing...

crashed my 2 month old car. cost me 20,000. and quinn direct are offering me 11,000 for it now.

    waste of money there.
