    Hey Pete,

    1) Please pick your 8 worst dublin regulars, you would love to play with every night and your 8 toughest.

    2) I know you made a really concentrated effort to improve your live game earlier this year and its worked. What would you suggest are the biggest mistakes live cash players make?

3)If you had to pick a player to play a tournament for you who would you pick?

    4) same question as above except cash game play

5)Are you enjoying poker and life in general more since you finished the job?

    6) What do you think the standard of play is like in Dublin compared to a year ago?

Thanks for doing this Peter, and good luck with the new new house:D

il think of some questions over the weekend - but good luck in here.

on a scale of 1 to 10, with one being normal and 10 being the sickest degenerate ever known to man do you think you are a 9 or a 10?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,187 ✭✭✭Flushdraw

Are you a maths players, an odds player or a feel player :p

Seriously though.....has Pete agreed to do this, or will he just get a nasty suprise when he logs on and sees a gazillion questions directed at him?

Just seen the other thread. wp Cardshark!

Hi Peter, hope you're keeping well. Just a few questions...

    1. What games in Dublin in the past 9 months have been your favorite basing your assessment on both enjoyment and profitability? eg EPT cash games, IO Cash games, Emporium NL game etc...

    2. What direction do you see your game selection going in the future? Will you keep grinding, for want of a better word, live cash? Focus more on tournaments and look for a big result? Or switch to being predominantly an online player?

    3. I've always been curious as to why you never play in the Fitz?

    4. How do try to balance your lifestyle in terms of exercise, sleeping patterns etc when you are playing 3,4 maybe 5 nights a week, often for the whole night? Is this somethig you make an effort to balance mainly in terms of exercise?

    5. When you return from travelling do you intend to go back into 9 to 5 employment or maybe your answer to Q2 will overlap into your answer here?

    6. When you decided to play full-time, was it becuase you were no longer working and just fell upon the decision or, did you leave the job in order to pursue poker more seriously?

Thanks for taking the time to do the well,
    Adam

    Standard Questions:

    1) What online games are you playing?
    2) What stakes?
    3) How many tables?
    4) Are you running good or bad?
    5) Do you have a big enough bankroll for these stakes?

I'll think of some of my own later. Good luck mate.

    First off Lloyd dfgkjdgkndfg.

I didn't agree to do a well but I will answer the questions that have been put up. Knackered now so I'll probably answer most of them later. I'm not one for elaborating on answers (which is why I didn't want to do a well) so most will probably be pretty short.

    1) What online games are you playing?
    2) What stakes?
    3) How many tables?

Until the last couple of week none really. I'd occasional dabble online but I never really made the effort. I've been doing well live and never enjoyed playing online as much. I'd say I was about even, maybe even a small loser. I have been guilty of a few drunken trips to 5/10 and the likes so they might be part of the reason.

Lately I've been growing a bit tired of playing live the whole time and have decided to give online a proper go. About 2 weeks ago I got Eyepoker (I've datamined about 100K+ hands) and a PAHUD. Since then I've been 4 tabling 1/2.

    4) Are you running good or bad?

I been running pretty well, I've played about 12.5K hands in the last couple of weeks and am running at 10.83bb. A very small sample size so I don't think you can take much from it.

    5) Do you have a big enough bankroll for these stakes?

Yea, I could play at higher levels but I want to work on my online game. I feel there's lots to do and I don't really want to jump into the higher games until I'm beating 1/2 over a decent sample size.

why do you play live so much? you could double or triple your hourly rate online.

I never really planned to play live over online, it's just the way things have gone. I prefer playing live and there's still pretty good money to be made. I agree about the difference between playing live and online though and have recently decided to concentrate my efforts there.

are you going to give vegas a go next year?

That's the plan anyways. I'm off to Melbourne in the NY and plan to stay in oz for a few months and maybe head somewhere else on the way to vegas. Hoping to be there shortly before the series starts. I presume I'll see ya there ;)

    do you ever play PLO?

Rarely, mostly because I suck at it. I've never really made any effort to learn the game. It's something I'm planning on changing.

Since your questions are related to regular live play all my answers will to.

    1) Please pick your 8 worst dublin regulars, you would love to play with every night and your 8 toughest.

I’m lazy so I’m not going to do 8. There are a number of players that could be added to either list and for the most part I’ve only included those I play with regularly.

    Worst

    Ector
    The Chief
    Nathan
    Mick the lip
    Murat

    Best

    Mick Stephens
    Marc MacDonnell
    Eamon
    Sam
    Ross Johnston
    John (who plays in SE)
    Adam Fallon

    2) I know you made a really concentrated effort to improve your live game earlier this year and its worked. What would you suggest are the biggest mistakes live cash players make?

For the most part it’s playing their hands and putting no effort into thinking about what other players might have. Over playing one pair holdings and paying little or no attention to the basic odds. A large number of players who play live are horrific and make all the basic mistakes repeatedly. It actually amazes me that a lot of them have been playing for years and have not improved at all and in some case regressed.

3)If you had to pick a player to play a tournament for you who would you pick?

    Ross Johnston

    4) same question as above except cash game play

It’s close between a number of people. If I was going for the quick spin I would pick Marc or Sam. If I wanted to ensure I got my money back with profit it would probably be Ross.

5)Are you enjoying poker and life in general more since you finished the job?

Yes although I am guilty of not using my free time. Mostly it’s because of the house thing, I’ve nearly been getting it sorted / going traveling for about 6 months (something keeps coming up which pushes the date out each time. Builders have a lot to answer for!) now so I’ve just kinda lived one day to the next and organized very little. I’m also guilty of spending less time with my none poker mates as a result of the hours I keep. This is something that I get a bit of grief about and would like to / will change.

    6) What do you think the standard of play is like in Dublin compared to a year ago?

I think the general standard has increased and to be honest I think boards has played a large part in that. The amount of people who use this forum has gone up dramatically in the last year. Saying that the games are still very beatable to those with even the basics.

Thanks for doing this Peter, and good luck with the new house:D

    Thanks Mick.

    1. What games in Dublin in the past 9 months have been your favorite basing your assessment on both enjoyment and profitability? eg EPT cash games, IO Cash games, Emporium NL game etc...

The most enjoyable games were during the summer in the Jackpot. Fairly regularly most of the table would be playing 400bb deep. I much prefer playing deep stacked poker and feel lost with less than 100bb. Probably why I don’t play many tourneys any more.

I’d imagine the IO games were pretty juicy but I made an effort not to play them as I was playing the tounrey. I don’t think it’s advisable to be jumping from tourneys into cash games. The EPT cash games were only really good on the Tue/Wed and then a lot of people left to go to Amsterdam for the Classic. I ran horrifically for the most part during them so I didn’t’ particularly enjoy them. Mind you I did pwn Reggie in a pretty big pot which was sweet.

The most profitable and consistent favorite is probably the SE NL game.

    2. What direction do you see your game selection going in the future? Will you keep grinding, for want of a better word, live cash? Focus more on tournaments and look for a big result? Or switch to being predominantly an online player?

To be honest I don’t know what the future holds. I didn’t’ leave my job to play poker full time, I left to go traveling. I use to work in The Bank of New York as a project manager in the IT Dept. I was in the process of buying and apartment which was forever delayed (hence I haven’t left yet) and as a result I’ve been playing poker as a means of income. But it’s has been going well so who knows? I’m off to Oz in the NY and then probably travel around a bit until the world series. I don’t have any plans further than that. If I decide to keep playing poker I will certainly concentrate my effort online and play live more for fun.

    3. I've always been curious as to why you never play in the Fitz?

I started playing live regularly in the SE (well I did play a bit before that over the colossus where I was a giant fish) and have no reason to play anywhere else really. The games are good and all the staff are great. I do find some things irritating like the lack of food and the early closing though. I never really felt comfortable playing in the Fitz and as result I don’t play there much.

    4. How do try to balance your lifestyle in terms of exercise, sleeping patterns etc when you are playing 3,4 maybe 5 nights a week, often for the whole night? Is this somethig you make an effort to balance mainly in terms of exercise?

Lol, I’m terrible at all of the above. In general I go to sleep / get up when I want with little thought put into it. I use to play football twice a week (now only once) but other than that I get very little exercise. It’s another thing on the list of things to do!

    5. When you return from travelling do you intend to go back into 9 to 5 employment or maybe your answer to Q2 will overlap into your answer here?

    See question 2

    6. When you decided to play full-time, was it becuase you were no longer working and just fell upon the decision or, did you leave the job in order to pursue poker more seriously?

    See question 2

I would recommend a roll of 10K but you could get away with having a smaller roll. I know a few regulars who have less than that and do fine.

    2. How long have you been playing and when did you really start to make decent money from poker?

I use to play drunken games with my mates but we were all pretty horrific. Viewing a gutshot like and oesfd and being amazed when we didn’t hit. Then I went away snowboarding about 3 years ago and fractured my leg in 3 places (drinking in the chalet on my last night, but that’s another story!). I spent 6 months out of work doing very little except watching tv and playing xbox. At the time we had recently got sky digital and I discovered all the poker shows. I started really getting into them and watching them every night. As with most things one thing led to another and I started to play a lot poker. It was probably around the time when the SE opened that I started winning decent money on a regular basis.

    3. What books, if any have you read and do you read/post on twoplustwo?

I have about 5 poker books, I’ve yet to read one of them. :o Boards has been a huge influence for me and where I have gleaned most of my knowledge of the game. I also a firm believer that doing is one of the best ways to learn.

    4. Would it be worth shagging pamela anderson for the hep c?[/QUOTE]

Drunk instant yes, worry about the consequences in the morning. Sober I might try and pick someone who would not leave me with the Hep C.

    1. What should the average player do to improve?

Pay more attention to the game in general, especially when not in a hand. There is lots of information to be gathered that people miss out on as they turn to watch the football after folding.

    2. Do you / did you play sports ? Name the sports.

I’ve played all sorts of different sports over the years, everything from squash to martial arts. I use to play sports at least 2/3 times a weak before I fractured my leg. Then I wasn’t able to run for about 9 months and became very lazy. I played tennis for my school and was 800 and 1500 meter champion in running. I also played right back for the college football team.

    3. Do you gamble on sports ?

Hardly ever, I have enough vices! I do occasionally have a punt but only really when I go to the races themselves or get a ‘good’ tip.

    4. How many times a month do you play live ?

Probably about 15 - 20 times on average.

    5. What is the biggest mistake you see in tournaments ?

Limp calling with weak hands out of position.

    6. Any tells you would like to share with us ?

None in particular although some players have obvious ones which are easy enough for observant players to pick up on. For the most part I think tells are based on previous information gathered, often at a subconscious level. I find that if you watch people and how they act / re-act when playing different hands (weak holdings / strong holdings / draws etc) it makes decisions easier when you are playing hands against them.

I’d like to but can’t see it happening anytime soon.

How long can you play for at a time before you start playing badly?

It’s not really a time issue with me. I have and can play well for long periods of time (12 hours +). Other times I start playing badly in a very short space of time but this is usually when I come to the game tired.

Would u snip that newish lounge girl person who works in jacks?

Definitely, there’s a wicked glint in her eye.;)

Who is your favourite/least favourite dealer?

I don’t have a specific favorite dealer so to speak. There are lots of good ones and as long as they know what they’re doing and keep the game moving at a good speed I’m happy enough.

Least favorite is the guy who works in the Jackpot, I don’t know what his name is. He hasn’t a clue half the time what’s going on. Can be very frustrating if your in the middle of a big hand and he makes a mess of the action / pot. It actually sends me a little on tilt when I see him come to deal.

Marc akqj10(known nit) raises it up utg Marius/maybe markus not sure (notoriously filthy rock reraises) u peek down at the ak hearts on the button-What do u do?

It would depend on the stack sizes but the default would be to call when deep.

    Ever done the tank?

Depends on what you mean by tank. I have on occasion lost all the money I brought out with me, but thankfully this doesn’t happen very often.

Hi Peter was looking forward to your well and thanks for taking the time

    1. Your composure and temperament seem to me to be the attributes that set you apart from most other live players . Were you always so level headed and cool when it came to making crucial decisions or is it something you have worked on and improved on. If so how?

2.What do you personally feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a poker player?

3.Why havnt you played more live big tournaments after your outstanding performance in the Irish Open?

    4.What single player, Dublin reg or otherwise, has made you feel most uncomfortable playing at the same table? {I mean this in a pokersense nothing to do with BO etc}

5.Am I the biggest tellbox you know?

    Thanks again Peter. Bol

    10) Am I too tight when playing live cash? :)

    Cheers.

    1) Is being "D4 Old Money" good for the general psyche and sense of self?

    Lol.

    2) Give me three reasons why you don't really like tournaments?

I don’t like playing shallow and find it frustrating on having only x amounts of blinds. It cuts down the number of hands you can play and the action on later streets.
Not being able to top up / reload
Luck factor being so deciding in results

3)Will you ever actually leave Dublin?

That’s the plan. I’ve only been waiting around to get my gaff sorted, if it wasn’t for constant delays for months now I’d be gone. Due to get the keys on the 20th Dec and leave for oz early in Jan once I get everything sorted.

    4) Is loaning money to people that play live poker in Dublin -$EV?

Yes, but it’s not always easy to say no to someone you see all the time.

    5) Music? Film?

    Yes please.

    6) Favorite place to have a pint in Dublin (Kehoe's or Ryan's is not the correct answer to his question )?

Kehoe’s is probably near the top but it’s unrelated to the SE and I rarely go from / to the SE from there. They serve good Guinness and I like the old feel of the place. I’m also partial to a trip to Jonny Foxes for the same reasons. It’s also a great place to take someone on a date as it had an intimate feel and the drive back with the views over the city is guaranteed to get ya some. ;)

    7) Do you drink when you play on a regular basis? Are you sometimes surprised at the fact that even regular thinking live players are willing to put a tank on the table while sloshed?

I rarely drink before / during time I plan to play. But saying that like 100% of poker players I do play sometimes when I’ve been out on the piss. It’s nearly always fun but a lot of the time it doesn’t seem as much fun the next morning when you think of the money you donated.

    8) Playing live on a regular basis, do you sometimes look at some of the people you are taking money off and think, "oh dear". Or do you not give a **** on the basis that adults may do what they like with their time and money? You can avoid specific examples obv.

Sometimes I feel a little guilt but for the most part I see everyone as consenting adults and if they want to play poker for money that’s their choice. It doesn’t give me any pleasure taking what looks like someone’s weekly pay packet from them. But saying that I don’t think they’re going to lose any sleep winning a big pot from me so why should I when I win one against them. There have been occasions where I’ve check behind on he river knowing I have the best hand because I felt a little sorry for someone, but it rarely happens. At the end of the day it’s all about the Benjamin’s.

    9) Give me two positives and negatives of the various Dublin clubs. Your opinion obv.

    SE

    Good games / good staff
    Food / early closing

    Jackpot

Staff (the girls always look after me) / games (some great games from about 6am on)
Rid amount of drunks playing $50 / noisy

    Fitz

    Food / atmosphere
    Cramped / uncomfortable

    CHL

    Friendly atmosphere / Luke
Lack of good holdem games / Lack of players

    10) Am I too tight when playing live cash?

Yes, you probably open more pots playing tourneys. This can’t be right.

cmon on peter don't be shy how often folded kings preflop?
Also,do you think liverpool can/will ever win the league?
    Why halfbaked?
Do you remember my phil laak story from the IO?

cmon on peter don't be shy how often folded kings preflop?

Sorry Danny, missed you original Q. I’ve folded them twice pre flop. One I was right and the other time I wasn’t. The time I wasn’t right was actually a pretty strange hand. Guy opens UTG, one caller and I 3 bet from MP. Button then 4 bets and the original raiser goes all in. It was my second hand at the table having just arrived but I was sure one of them had AA. Neither of them did, one of them had AJ and the other AQ!

Also,do you think liverpool can/will ever win the league?

    No your doomed.

    Why halfbaked?

Me and my mates loved the film and watched it a sick amount of times.

I was sending someone a PM on boards and to do that I needed to sign up. I had only just become aware of boards and didn’t really put any effort into the name, I just thought of a film I liked.

Do you remember my phil laak story from the IO?

Was it the time you meet Phil in the lobby of the Burlington just before he went to go to the airport you spent some quite time together?

    Peter,

How profitable is J5 on your PT database?

Lol, it was more of a live hand that has now been stricken from my range. I’ve never played it online other than from the bb. I’d say live it is in profit.

Thank you for taking the time to do this.

    1. I have sat at a table with you 2-3 times. You seem quite calm and controlled at the table. Have you worked consciously on this, or did it come with table time?

    2. What was your biggest pot to date?

    3. Talk us through the IO TV hand with Elvis. [IIRC you raised with 88 pre-flop...]

    1. I have sat at a table with you 2-3 times. You seem quite calm and controlled at the table. Have you worked consciously on this, or did it come with table time?

I think that one of my strengths is the ability to remain calm when playing poker and it’s rare that losing a big pot send me on tilt these days. It was something I made a conscious effort with, but it has also come mostly with table time. When I started playing I would get upset if I lost an 80/20 or the likes and it would send me on tilt. But after a while I think you learn that getting upset / tilted is not going get you that pot back. If you let it effect you it’s more likely that you will lose more pots due to your judgment being clouded. When you play cash games it’s all about the long term, trying not to let pots that have passed effect the ones you are going to play. You will make / save quite large numbers over a decent sample size buy doing this.

Saying that I am human and sometimes these things do effect me. If I tilt these days it’s usually in a tournament where I left frustration creep in, it’s not like a cash game where I can just reload after losing a pot and this occasionally effects me. The last few times I’ve felt that tilt is imminent playing cash I’ve just left the game.

    2. What was your biggest pot to date?

To be honest I don’t remember. I’ve won a good few 2.5K+ pots.

    3. Talk us through the IO TV hand with Elvis. [IIRC you raised with 88 pre-flop...]

Yea this is the hand, it’s about 4 mins in

I get a bit of stick of some who feel I misplayed the hand and they’re probably right. I played the hand the way I did based on previous hands I played with Elvis. Actually the first hand I played with Elvis I was in the bb and he was UTG+1. He min raises after UTG has folded and it’s folded around to me and I call (I can’t even remember what I had, some junky bb hand though). Flop come down and I completely miss so I check, he checks behind. I though he had missed and lead for half the pot on the turn, he instantly goes all in for about 20 times the pot. I obviously snap fold. Then the very next orbit the same thing happens again. He min raises UTG+1 and it’s folded around to me and I call, I had K7o. I decide that unless I hit the board I’m not going to put a chip in the pot as I felt he’d just do the same again. We both check 3 street and my K high is good, he had J10o. We played a number of hands then over the day and I had a good feel for where I was in a hand with him.

So we get moved onto the TV table and after a few orbits he raises to 18K playing 60K UTG and it’s folded around to me in the bb and I look down at the 88. I felt putting in so much of his stack pre flop wasn’t going fold if I move in. I felt his range was A10+ and 77+. My plan was to call the bet and shove most flops. Then when the flop came down I felt it was the sort of flop he might of hit and didn’t want to shove and have him snap call with TP. I decided to check and see what he did, I felt that if he missed he would check and I could take it away on most turns. I check and he instantly goes all in, yuck. This just didn’t add up, I thought about it for a while and watched him as I asked the dealer for a count, he looked very uncomfortable. If you‘ve seen Dave Masters exit hand (sorry Dave) you’ll notice how calm Elvis is and sitting back in his chair. When he went all in he had his hands clenched and was leaning forward.looking very uncomfortable The more I though about it the more I though he had missed. After about a minute I called expecting to have the best hand, it was a little disappointing to see him with the exact same hand. Mind you I could have made the same read and he could have had 99 or A10 so I suppose it could have been worse.
