Would you like to work for Boards.ie.

Boards is looking for a full time developer and technical person and of course we would really like to choose someone from the boards community who is familiar with boards.ie and its values.

Ideally we would like someone with the following skills or the ability to acquire these skills fairly quickly.

    1) Linux/unix admin
    2) PHP
    3) MySql
    4) Some Development Experience

Reporting to the admin team [and responding to moderator and user requests] this person will be responsible for Boards.ie software development and also the technical maintenance of the boards.ie servers.

The purpose of the appointment is to take these roles from the admin team and to use their expertise to set systems and procedures to providing a better experience to boards users and the moderator team.

Apart from Linux/Unix experience familiarity with vbulletin, openads and Drupal while useful are not essential, we would be happy with an enthusiastic and capable developer who is eager to contribute ideas and learn.

You can register your interest and forward your CV to jobs@boards.ie, links to samples of your work are welcome as are any ideas you might have. Your boards user name should be included as well:)

Damn! I can't do any of that stuff! :(

May the best Boardsie for the job get it!

Vexy, I'm assuming there's no HQ for this - whoever gets the job will need to have some mobility (i.e. able to get to Digiweb's DC), as well as the facilities at home (BB, etc) to manage the systems?

Any idea of a rough salary, or is it dependent on experience/skills?

Would you prefer someone that knew some of your requirements, or one person for all?

    Seamus

Boards has a HQ - Nothing Fancy - in the Docklands Innovation Park.

Travel to the servers would not be required too often, we have a good relationship with the DC guys there, and I am sure most admin can be done remotely from the Office.

We do have a rough idea of Salary but do not want to announce as who ever gets the position may not want their salary to be know. I do know it is higher than a large Dublin Financial Institutions pays for Graduate Programmers.

We do not have the luxury to buy a very experienced tech/programming wiz, unless someone out there wants to be part of the boards community build something really interesting with us. Right now we need someone who can do have a bash at the small things and feed off the other boards founders, crystallise some of their ideas, do some server tech stuff and help us move our plans forward.

@Sully, Ideally someone who had some experience of all our requirements, but we can be flexible if the right person is flexible and willing to learn.

@Raskolnnikov I think we can bend on that point for the reason I gave, would you want people to be able to google your salary? or what ever number of vistors that 800,000 unique visits a month actually equates to to know, so you see where I am coming from and why this ad would be an exception to that rule. :)

    V.

Will there be a strict internet policy put in place by the employers? - no surfing boards :D

would love to do this (beats sales work for sure) but i would imagine someone else more qualified would go for it. i'd die in the interview if i followed some mad linux junkie who's been coding PHP since before PHP was cool :D

Maybe you Could pm the people and let them know the salary once they have submited their CV ?

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

I'm sure that can be done, presuming they are serious candidates.
The salary wont be the cool thing about this job. It will be competitive but the fact is that we only have money for one person so they will get to do everything, be in charge (more or less) of everything within their sphere of knowledge, set most of their detailed daily tasks and get a lot of experience from the admins (who are all reasonably heavy hitters in tech/biz/sales terms) who will guide them.

Its definitely a job for someone who doesnt want to be in the rat race. We're not interested in "normal" :)

    DeV.

Well done on this milestone guys and good luck to whoever gets it.

Now, in regards to boards.ie HQ, time to get my stalking kit together.

I have had a few requests for the approx salary for the position, we have budgeted 33,000 if that helps.

With a suitable Internet, I suspect this could be done from the Bahamas. I remember years ago interfacing NT4.0 to and AS/400 in "International Risk Mangement Ltd"* discovering the entire IT dept was mysteriously in Bahamas.

*The office was Shannon and they did not talk american, have strings or drive/fly cool vehicles.

I hope you get the right guy lads.

I might apply, but I have some demands:

    1) Move boards.ie HQ down to North Cork.
    2) Move servers down to my house [I have broadband now ya know!].
    3) Pay me 4 times the salary scale, in pieces of pie.

That's it really. I think they are reasonable. Get back to me if this is suitable....

Are you planning to get an employee mangement system to help

    - Cut Costs
    - Reduce Workload
    - Attract and Retain Staff

An employee management system? What's that in non-buzzword speak?

That's a reasonable salary figure, given the role and the freedom the person will have in their job. 2 years ago I would have been in there like a shot :)

vBulletin is written in PHP, so in order to perform upgrades or add features and such, you would need to have a decent grasp of the language.

If you're proficient in another language though, particularly Perl, C or Java, you shouldn't have much difficulty picking it up, so I'd say it would be worth sending your CV in if you fancy it.

If I was an analyst/programmer, had any computer skills and actually knew what any of the required skills were I'd be perfect for this job..

    Unfortunately I know nothing :(!!

I'll be v jealous of the boardsie that does have the right skills!

This job is actually the EXACT stuff I do, but unfortunately I'm unavailable... I would be interested otherwise.

Come January, when the recruitment season begins (December is a dead month for recruitment) I would expect a lot more interest in the role!

would ye be looking for a graduate in software design and development by any chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,270 ✭✭✭deegs

If the option to work from home was there i'd send of my CV as i got all that and more :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,963 ✭✭✭Vexorg

@skelliser : There is no reason why a graduate in software design & development would not fit the bill. We would be happy to look at what you have to offer:)

@deegs : We do not see the role as work from home, there is no reason why the work could not be done from home and we would be open to this person working from home occasionally. In the initial period, there person would have to be in the office while we get to know each other and get certain projects out of the way.

@Stephen : not really, as I said above, it is quite possible that it may develop that way but it is not the intention that it would be a work from home.

Its a pity this didn't come up sooner... I'm just about to finish my PhD and a job like this would suit me just fine.. I have php experience and did a bit of research in social networks, i have also done a ton of open source work so an informal/flexible/creative environment would be my preference.. I also have a ton lolcat pictures and don't own a suit!

However im off to Canada in a few months to do a postdoc so i wont be available..

Good luck with who ever you guys find! ;)

I'd be intrested in this, I've been a contract software engineer for 8 years so have been exposed to lots of current technology, I did Linux before for a contract but it was a while ago so I'd need a quick refresher but I'm sure it's like riding a bike and I own a small forum that's phpBB based and have totally rewrote that. As for the other stuff my job requires that I can pick up new things fairly easily or there's no food on the table :D so in a week I'd be flying and I certainly wouldn't be classed as "normal" :D:D Let me know if it's still open and I'll fire along a C.V. and some links.

Possibly not the best person for the job so.

    "What do you need doing"

    "It's in the damn requirements."

"Oh is that what that email was about"

Is the coolest job I can think of that I would possibly have a chance of getting. Unfortunately I am fairly confident that my wiofe and kids would not like an eighth move in 3 years.

I wonder how much interest there has been in this postion?

Personally I think the experience gained from this would be brilliant, very few roles where you get so much freedom in what you do.
