He had seemed to have gone down hill in the last couple of months. And the Gardi notify relatives/others if there is no one who can do so on behalf of the deceased.

I'd say he got that, and I assume that he meant that he hopes that Matt will get a proper funeral, that there'll be attendance from relevant people in college (GMB people, LGBT people, SU?), and that it gets proper coverage in student papers, either obituary, or a full article (rather than just a "in other news" snippet). Like him or loate him, he was a character within college, and he deserves proper recognition.

    Poor Matt. RIP buddy.

He was without a doubt the best character in college.

Many of you will be saddened to learn that Matteo Matubara died on November 18th. He had been becoming increasingly frail over the past few months and it was obvious to all who knew him that he was not long for this world. He was the last of a number of eccentrics who pottered about College over the years whose only real link to the place is the most important: they were known by generations of students for whom, in many ways, they formed a nostalgic link with their time in College. Certainly neither Lucy nor I can recall a time when Matteo was not a presence in College.

The police are attempting to trace surviving relatives at the moment but it is not apparent if they will be successful. When we have more details of his funeral we will circulate them so that those who wish may attend.

    Yesterday or 10 days ago?

RIP, none the less. Never got to know him. Minute's silence is in order.

Minutes silence? The guy physically assaulted staff and students, sexually harassed women, defaced college property.

I sincerely hope TCD aren't going to pay for his funeral or have any sort of remembrance service for him, he sounded like a horrid little man.

    You're great you are

I hope the college pays for his funeral expenses if no family or friends are found. It's sad in a way, little old man wanders around bothering people because he has nothing better to do but endears himself to many. Future generations will miss out on this tiny bit of Trinity culture.

The college should pay for nothing.he was nothing but a bum and had no connection with the place apart from to cause trouble and have certain people hoodwinked into thinking he was osme sort of charcter.

You find enjoyment watching a horrid little man abuse people?
Would you have thought different if it happened outside college - there are lots of "characters" like Matt the Jap around Dublin, but they're not romanticized because they don't frequent the grounds of TCD..

Listen, we all know your grievances with him, but whether you like to admit it or not, he was a character about campus, and there are plenty of people who will dispute you on that. And I can imagine that they won't take kindly to being accused of getting "hoodwinked" by him.

Right, lets put it this way.

The man is dead, some people liked him, others didn't. Those who didn't, DON'T spend your time on this thread simply posting about how he was a bollocks, cus I will delete.

Secondly, College will NOT pay for his funeral, and I can't believe some of you even think that. among other things SIPTU would kick up a fuss, so its a non-issue. stop arguing about it. drop it. Get it?

I am very proud to say that I was "assaulted" by Matt the Jap on two separate occasions in the arts block, for sitting in his favourite seat. Once, he came along and started whacking his walking stick on the table and pushed my stuff to the ground. I had no idea who this crazed little hobbit was!

On the second occasion, I had walked past him an hour previously (as he hobbled his way to the arts block - thinking to myself "Jesus that lad must be a hundred and fifty years old). There I was, sitting with my head stuck behind the Irish Times, only for Matt the Jap to whack my newspaper with his cane. I nearly jumped out of my seat. It was after this that someone told me that was Matt the Jap's favourite seat.

I presumed he died years ago!

Its sad news regardless of what kind of person he was, I never really knew him so I can't comment on that. He was certainly a character anyway.

I don't think anyone mentioned that he was found with a substantial amount of money (over 100 K). There's talk of several people paying for his rent in the last few years.

Money should go towards victims of sexual abuse in the work place.

Sad to hear but not a massive shock. I had quite a lot of contact with him over the years and I thought he was an alright guy but he no question had a strange and sometimes horrible streak.
