Just curious to what are you peoples favourite lyrics and song?

Mine at the moment are from Born in the USA

"I had a brother at Khe Sanh, fighting off the Viet Cong, their still there but he's all gone."

Didnt sound particularly special till I heard him sing it solo and acoustic

From the same guy interestingly - 'And my clothes don't fit me no more' (Streets of Philadelphia) - I've always thought that was a particularly touching lyric.:(

Keeping up the Springsteen trend my favorite would be "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?"

It's a song by Bob Dylan which can be found on his wonderful Highway 61 Revisited album. Lyrics here.

"You are my centre as I spin away" - Thom Yorke, Videotape. (The whole song is amazingly written, but that line in particular really does it for me).

"'Taint no sin to take off your skin and dance around in your bones" - William Burroughs.

"I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now" - Bob Dylan

"We'll cross that bridge after it's gone, after we're way past it" - Bob Dylan

"There's a gap in between, there's a gap where we meet. Where I end and you begin" - Thom Yorke

    .....

    That's enough for now.

On the Springsteen theme (I got my ticket \o/)

Fat man sitting on a little stool, takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you

    Others include
Those were days of roses, poetry and prose, when all I had was you and all you had was me, there were no tomorrows, we packed away our sorrows and we saved them for a rainy day. - Martha Tom Waits

I sing the song because I love the man I know that some of you don't understand Milk-blood to keep from running out. I've seen the needle and the damage done A little part of it in everyone But every junkie's like a settin' sun. Neil Young Needle and the Damage Done

Came across this beaut in an old Northern soul song the other week (can't remember the name of it now):

"She took back her love, if that's what she call it
She messed you around, left you an alcoholic"

Didn't Cathy Dennis write that song? Or was the old "Change a word, take a third" rule invoked on songwriting credits.

Dunno about favorite, but this line in Funky Cold Medina (when he discovers his date is a man) always made me laugh:

"ain't no plans with a man,
this is the 80s and I'm down the ladies"

    Otherwise it's probably

"So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath

If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath"

    or

"Oh God save history God save your mad parade"

although with the latter, I always invested it with the cooler meaning of a 'mad parade' of dubiously "historical" figures, until I realized he probably just meant the Jubilee parade.

I don't know if I could give my favourite lyric or the line, its always changing with my humour, or just with time. But a few I like at the minute.

"When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal." Dylan - Like a Rolling Ston

"Yeah, I'm the pain you tasted, fell intoxicated" -Prodigy

"I've seen so much in so many places

Probably not my favourite line but off the top of my head:

"Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street".
Opening line of Joe Jackson's brilliant "Is she reallt going out with him".

    Edit: Continuing the Springsteen theme:
Pretty much the whole of "The River".
Can't remember the exact lyrics but it's very evocative.

Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes' is pretty good.

    Pink Floyd
    » High Hopes

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut

There was a ragged band that followed our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    With friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
    There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times

    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    The taste was sweeter
    The nights of wonder
    With friends surrounded
    The dawn mist growing
    The water flowing
    The endless river
    Forever and ever...

I'd forgotten this one. I'm not a fan of Bruce Springsteen, but I love that song (and the album)...

    Deserves the whole song tbh:

I saw her standin on her front lawn just twirlin her baton
Me and her went for a ride sir and ten innocent people died

From the town of lincoln nebraska with a sawed-off .410 on my lap
Through to the badlands of wyoming I killed everything in my path

I cant say that Im sorry for the things that we done
At least for a little while sir me and her we had us some fun

The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death
Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest

Sheriff when the man pulls that switch sir and snaps my poor neck back
You make sure my pretty baby is sittin right there on my lap

They declared me unfit to live said into that great void my soul
    Be hurled
They wanted to know why I did what I did
Well sir I guess theres just a meanness in this world

    What's left inside him?
    Don't he remember us?
    Can't he believe me?
    We seemed like bothers
    Talked for hours last month
    About what we wanna be
I sit now with his hand in mine
But I know he can't feel...

    No one knows
    What's done is done
It's as if he were dead

    I'm close with his mother
    And she cries endlessly
    Lord how we miss him
    At least what's remembered
It's so important to make best friends in life
But it's hard when my friend sits with blank expressions

    No one knows
    What's done is done
It's as if he were dead

He as hollow as I alone now
He as hollow as I alone
    A shell of my friend
    Just flesh and bone
    There's no soul
    He sees no love
I shake my fists at skies above
    Mad at God

He as hollow as I converse
I wish he'd waken from this curse
Hear my words before it's through
I want to come in after you
    My best friend

He as hollow as I alone.

have so so many, but some I'm very fond of

Michelle Branch - "And when the stars fall I'll lie awake, for you're my shooting star"

Bunny - "So you chase the finest lies, I'd gladly live them for you,
your hero in disguise is standing right before you
I'm the leader I'm the liar I'm the flame of your desire
So you take away these tears I'll move a mountain for you
You're drowning in your fears but I'll be the light to guide you
    I'm the leader..."

Lifer - Cuz in this life this craziness is the solution to the pain that remains
And the only time we see clearly is after we’ve gone completely insane
    Insane…
    Oh like me…
    Oh like me…
    Just go a little crazy…
Cuz I was lifeless, people called me crazy
I went into the emptiness and found truth yeah…
Some call it the dark night swing out over the dark void
The only important thing is that you do
    That you do…
    Go crazy…

Bunny - If decency is a joke then you can laugh till you're broke and I'm wiping my ass with golden paper. So if you wanna fight take another bite and chew it all!

Jesse malin is a brilliant songwriter! Sort of inkeeping with the ongoing boss theme too, seeing as he recorded a song with springsteen on his latest album.

    "oh, she's like coney island,
at night, she lights up the sky.
-But i'm too scared to dance,
on those broken hearted beaches of romance".

    "Hanging with the local talent,
    Drinking like your Shane McGowan,
Going through your garbage, try to turn it all into gold.
    Down on the dole.
    Selling your soul."

"Thinking the things that I can't erase,
Hole in my heart and a gun in my face,
Feeling the things that I can't describe,
    I don't know I don't know I don't know why."

Yeah I'll go with anuthing by Tom Waits or Neil Young. Both amazing, Neil's particularly amazing live. I like Kentucky Avenure by Waits.

Eddie Grace's Buick got 4 bullet holes in the side
Charlie Delisle sittin' at the top of an avocado tree
Mrs Storm'll stab you with a steak knife if you step on her
    Lawn
I got a half pack of Lucky Strikes man come along with me
Lets fill our pockets with macadamia nuts
Then go over to Bobby Goodmanson's
    And jump off the roof

    Hilda plays strip poker
And her mamas across the street
Joey Navinski says she put her tongue in his mouth
    Dicky Faulkners got a switchblade
    And some gooseneck risers
    That eucalyptus is a hunchback
Theres a wind up from the south
Let me tie you up with kite string
And i'll show you the scabs on my knee
Watch out for the broken glass, put your shoes and socks
On and come along with me

    Lets follow that fire track
I think your house is burnin down
The go down to the hobo jungle and kill some rattle
    Snakes with a trowel
We'll break all the windowa in the old anderson place
And steal a bunch of Boysenberrys
And smear em on our face
I'll get a dollar from my mamas purse
And buy that scull and crossbones ring
And you can wear it around your neck on an old piece of
    String

Then we'll spit on Ronnie Arnold
    And flip him the bird
And slash the tires on the school bus
    Now don't say a word
I'll take a rusty nail and scratch your initials on my arm
And i'll show you how to sneak up on the roof of the
    Drugstore

Take the spokes from your wheelchair
    And a magpies wings
And tie em to your shoulders and your feet
I'll steal a hacksaw from my dad
And cut the braces off your legs
And we'll bury them tonight in the cornfield

Put a church keey in your pocket
We'll hop that freight train in the hall
And we'll slide down the drain all the way
To new orleans in the fall

    Great songwriter-

    The GHosts of Saturday Night.

    A cab combs the snake,
Tryin to rake in that last nights fare,
    And a solitary sailor
Who spends the facts of his life
    Like small change on strangers...

    Paws his inside p-coat pocket
    For a welcome twenty-five cents,
And the last bent butt from a package of kents,
As he dreams of a waitress with maxwell house eyes
And marmalade thighs with scrambled yellow hair.

    Her rhinestone-studded moniker says, "irene"
As she wipes the wisps of dishwater blonde from her eyes

And the texaco beacon burns on,
The steel-belted attendant with a ring and valve special...
Cryin "filler up and check that oil"
"you know it could be a distributor and it could be a coil."

The early mornin final editions on the stands,
And that town cryers cryin there with nickels in his hands.
Pigs in a blanket sixty-nine cents,
Eggs - roll em over and a package of kents,
Adam and eve on a log, you can sink em damn straight,
Hash browns, hash browns, you know I cant be late.

And the early dawn cracks out a carpet of diamond
Across a cash crop car lot
    Filled with twilight coupe devilles,
    Leaving the town in a-keeping
Of the one who is sweeping
Up the ghosts of saturday night...
